sunday post

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
It’s a chance to share News. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

What happened this week?
This was again a busy and slightly stressful week. There was work, visiting a zoo, Pita’s surgery and some drama concerning our roleplaying group (which luckily is sorted out now).

On Monday my boyfriend and I went to a Zoo with my boyfriend’s parents. We usually go to a zoo called Blijdorp (we went there earlier this year), but my boyfriends parent’s had gotten free tickets for a zoo called Artis which is located in Amsterdam. I visited Artis when I was very little, so I couldn’t remember much about the zoo and thought it would be interesting to visit again. Although we had a fun day the zoo itself was a bit disapointing. We are used to Blijdorp and Artis was much smaller and soem animals where combined in the same cages. Also some of the cages where pretty small and a few animals seemed stressed. I love animals and while I like having the chance to see animals in zoo’s I wouldn’t see otherwise, I always feel so sad for the animals and their bad living conditions.

Thursday was Pita her surgery. She had a tumor that needed to be removed. Luckily her sugery went well and when I came to get her from the vet, she was actively running around the small carrier cage. We’ll keep her seperate from the other two rats until her wound has healed a bit, because when Snicker had her tumor removed about a half year ago the other rats actually tore her stitches, we don’t want to risk that happening with Pita. So now she mostly sits with me the whole days and sleep in the carrier cage next to our bed. She seems to enjoy the extra attention she’s getting.

Beside that I had a new tour that I am organizing with Lola’s Blog Tours. And I announced the winners of my one year anniversary giveaway.

On the blog I’ve been thinking about what I want to do during Sci-Fi month November. It’s a sci-fi themed event I already wrote one Lola’s Ramblings post for it and came up with the other topics I want to write about. I also received contact information from an author whom I am going to interview and I already send him some questions. I am looking for some more sci-fi authors who want to stop by for a guest post or interview during the month. And I probably will come up with soem sci-fi picks for My To-Be Read List meme for November. I won’t be only posting about sci-fi books that month, but I like to try to have the majority of the posts have something to do with sci-fi.

And I ran into a problem with my websites. My hosting provider e-mailed me to let me know I was reaching my maximum limit of cpu usage and physical memory usage. ofcourse I could buy more resources, but first I wanted to look into other options. So I spend a huge chunk of yesterday trying to figure out what cpu usage and physical memory usage is and what i can do to get them down. I deleted some unused plugins and am looking into using another site to upload covers and other images. I realized I always upload all the pictures to my own sites and in the cas eof Lola’s Blog Tours I also use those images for the html media kit, I am asusming that gives extra strain on my website. Ugh wish I realized this earlier. So now I am trying out some image hostign sites to see what works, what their limits are etc. Figuring things like these out is always so tiresome, but I am a afraid they are going to delete my website or get it down if I keep reaching the maximum limit and that thought scares me. I don’t want to lose my websites.

Ages 12 and up

Maddie Fynn is a shy high school junior, cursed with an eerie intuitive ability: she sees a series of unique digits hovering above the foreheads of each person she encounters. Her earliest memories are marked by these numbers, but it takes her father’s premature death for Maddie and her family to realize that these mysterious digits are actually death dates, and just like birthdays, everyone has one.

Forced by her alcoholic mother to use her ability to make extra money, Maddie identifies the quickly approaching death date of one client’s young son, but because her ability only allows her to see the when and not the how, she’s unable to offer any more insight. When the boy goes missing on that exact date, law enforcement turns to Maddie.

Soon, Maddie is entangled in a homicide investigation, and more young people disappear and are later found murdered. A suspect for the investigation, a target for the murderer, and attracting the attentions of a mysterious young admirer who may be connected to it all, Maddie’s whole existence is about to be turned upside down. Can she right things before it’s too late?

  1. Glad to hear Pita is OK, you’ve had your share of health issues lately with the animals so it’s great to hear she did well. I joined Sci Fi November too and look forward to seeing what you come up with. I like that it’s a month long, lots of time to plan reviews or interviews or whatever. Should be fun.

When sounds interesting, that’s a new premise and I’m curious about it.

    • Pita’s still struggling a bit with the recovery, she had some diaree yesterday and we keep having to clean her carrier cage because it get’s dirty. She seems a bit off thanks to the medicines, but beside that she’s doing well.

Sci-fi month should be a lot of fun! This is the first time I am participating in somethign like that and I am not exactly sure how much I want to focus on sci-fi only. I tried to get some authors to write guest posts or interview by tweteing about it, but I think I’ll have to start sending out e-mails instead. I also like that it’s a month long, there’s so much you cna do in a month.

The premise of When reminded me of a manga I once read called Death Note, it’s slightly similar, but very different as well. I am looking forward to reading it!

  2. I use Flicker for my images and also make sure you are not backing up your blog to your blog, That was what I was doing now I only save two on my blog and have backup someplace else (Dropbox) It was taking up all my memory and I don’t want to buy more yet. I also heard that Rafflecopters and Linkys take up a lot of space so it’s good to delete them when the giveaway is over. One day I plan to go that.

So glad Pita’s surgery went so well! I hope she has a quick recovery!!!

Zoo’s that are so small make me so sad 🙁 Those poor animals really need something a lot bigger to have a happy and healthy life. I understand most people do it so save the animals but they really deserve to have a bigger place to live

    Have a great week Lola!!!

    • I’ll be trying to use Flickr from now on, so I don’t have to load all those images to my site, maybe even remove some images and use the uploaded ones from Flickr. I don’t know why I never thought of this before, I feel so stupid. I am considering buying the extra resource option just so they won’t delete my sites :(.

I backup using installtron with dropbox. I never knew rafflecopters took a lot of space, sounds like a good idea to remove those when there over! I can at leats do that for Lola’s Blog Tours as they are eays to locate. It will be more effort to remove those form Lola’s Reviews.

Many zoo’s help preserve endangered animals, but still it’s so sad to see them in such small cages and some were obviously stressed. It was sad to see.

  3. I know most of the zoos here are slowly transitioning to more natural environments. It started with the bigger zoos but the smaller ones are slowly catching up. Hopefully that’s the same case there. The old style cages can be so depressing.

Glad Pita made it okay through her surgery and hopefully will heal quickly and be her old self soon. Have a great week and good luck with your storage issues! That kind of problem makes my eyes cross!

    • The big zoo we’re usually going has nice cages, but this one were pretty bad, only the giraffes had a nice cage.

Yeah I am really stressed out about my website problem. I thought I had found way to fix it and then broke my whole site, ugh. Luckily I managed to fix it again, but I ended up buying addition resources anyway, so at least I have some more time to look into it while not having to worry about them deleting my sites.

  4. Glad the surgery went ok and hopefully Pita will be ok from now on. I feel the same about zoo’s too, I love when the animals have lots of room and look happy but if I feel their area is too small, I get anxious about them and can’t enjoy visiting.
The website problem sounds stressful. How much diskspace are you allowed? I think my host allows 10 gb and I’ve just checked and I’m using nearly 7 so I think it’s an issue I’ll run into in the future. Any tips you can share would be much appreciated. I’m sure images are our biggest resource user so I suppose that’s the best place to start.

    • Pita seems to be in some pain sometimes, we try to be very careful with her, but if she stretches her leg closest to the stitches she squeaks in pain sometimes. I hope that will go away soon. The sticthes look very nice, so I think it wil recover nicely.

I have such a love/hate relationship with zoo’s, I can’t really enjoy visiting them when the cages are too small.

I ended up solving the website problem temporarily by just buying extra resources, so I can take my time solving it. The issue was with physical memory usage or ram and it was on 500 something and it’s now on 1000. I have no idea exactly what it means, it’s all a bit confusing.

    • Yes it really breaks your heart to see animals living in bad conditions. I was really surprised to see how much it varries from zoo to zoo.

  5. Sounds like Pita will be back in action soon. I’m sitting here watching my black cat, Sheba, try to get my equally black pit mix, Quigley, to play. She’s rolling around on the floor reaching out to him. He just keeps lifting his head higher off the ground, looking at her with disdain. Waht would we do without our babies.LOL
It breaks my heart to see animals unhappy. I wish I could help all of them.

    • As soon as her wound is closed, Pita will go back to the cage with the other rats. Her recovery goes really well so far, there was a little incident saturday night, but beside that she seems to be doing well.

    • You’ve never been to a zoo where they have penguins? I think penguins are pretty common in zoo’s around here. I can remember 3 different zoo’s I’ve been to where they had penguins. They are just so adorable!

    • The website stuff certainly is a pain in the ass, it’s so difficult to figure out exactly what is casuing the spikes. I have disabled a few plugins and found a very helpfull site that measured the speed of my website and showed what took the most time, turns out I embedded the google drive document to sign-up for tour on Lola’s Blog Tours. I thought that was handy, but those things take a lot of effort from my site. So I changed then all to links, less handy, but it made such a difference.

I can’t wait to read When, it sounds so interesting! I hope you have a great week as well!

    • I am really happy the surgery went well, I was so stressed waiting to hear back when she wa sin surgery. She’s enjoying all the extra attention she get’s. I hope she will be back to normal again soon.
