sunday post

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
It’s a chance to share News. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

What happened this week?

This was just one of those bleh weeks. I didn’t feel good and it just seemed to drag on and I struggled through it. On top of that I’ve had a few meh/ just okay reads, which didn’t help. Probably also because of my mood I couldn’t enjoy them as much, it works both ways probably. Luckily my audiobook and kobo ebook has been great, which really helped a lot and I listened a lot this week. I finally picked up a Carol Van Natta book on my ipad too and that seems to have broken the circle of meh reads.

Then Thursday evening my computer monitor suddenly didn’t work and after some trying things out, we figured out the cable didn’t work anymore for some reason even tough it’s only half a year old. So I had to order a new cable, which luckily solved the problem, but it was still a bit of a scare.

Luckily there were some good things this week as well. It was a productive work week. I got a good amount of hours of assistant work done and there was a tour I organized that took place this week.

I mentioned the Flickr problem I was having last week. They’re limited free accounts and deleting any pictures you have more than 1000, which means I had to delete a bunch of them and check they were on my blog already firs. I manged to delete enough of my photo’s before their deadline, so I don’t have to be afraid of them deleting any pictures at least. I plan to check the rest later as well, so nothing will be only uploaded there anymore.

I’ve been spending some more time in the kitchen lately. I baked some great American pancakes last weekend. And I discovered a recipe for roasted chickpeas that I make regularly now, it’s the only way I seem to like chickpeas. I tried making beet chips yesterday, but they didn’t turn out quite right. The flavor was good, but if I baked them long enough to turn crispy they got a burnt taste we didn’t like. I plan to try it again with different beets soon.

What did I read this week?

Lera of LunosSilk and SteelChaos Station

Lera of Lunos was a great ending to the series, but I had a few issues with it and my weird reading mood prevented me from enjoying it as much as I would’ve liked. Silk and Steel unfortunately was a DNF for me. I might get back to it later at some point, but I couldn’t stomach the dark parts anymore at this time. Chaos Station was a greta read and I look forward to continuing the series.

What did I cook for dinner this week?

Fringe RealmsNot Dead Yet

Fringe Realms I bought on release day when it was 99 cents. I’ve been curious about this one since I first heard of it, so I hope it’s good. Not Dead Yet is written by one of the authors who wrote Chaos Station (I have already read multiple books by the other author) and I was curious to read some of her solo work and I liked the sound of this one. I eventually decided to request it on netgalley as I hope to be able to read it later this month.

Tell me about a new recipe you tried/ discovered recently?

  1. Not feeling well or just having a dull week is no fun. Hope it gets better especially now that you’re past the scare with the cable and have your pictures on Flickr sorted.
I saw your Tweet earlier this week about the reading mood troubles, but I’m glad some other stories made it better.
I love pancakes. Yum. And roasted chick peas sounds good. I’ve never tried it that way. Bummer about the beet chips not getting to the right consistency for you. Hopefully, you work out the exact knack whether its temp, time, or maybe even thickness of the beet slices. It’s always some little thing, I find. 🙂
Hopefully, your new book trying the author’s solo works will be a it.

    Have a good week, Lola!

    • I hope next week will be a better one. My current reads are all good after the reading mood troubles I had, so that’s good.

I really liked pancakes and now that I made them a few times in a row it’s getting easier to make them.

I hope I can figure out how to get the beet chips right as the flavor was good, but the burned thing not. We were thinking along the same lines as you, to vary the temperature or time or thickness of slices. I had precooked beets this time, so I’ll trying raw ones next time.

  2. I like the sound of roasted chickpeas, Lola. Sorry about it being a bit of a meh kind of week… It’s always a bit grim after the excitement of Christmas, especially once the decorations come down with the days being so short. Glad it was only a cable issue – you’ve had enough problems with your monitor, haven’t it? Hope the coming week is an easier one:)

    • I’ll have to make the time to type out my roasted chickpeas recipe, they’re so good. i tried a different spice mix today and those were great too.

I think the short days might have something to do with it. I forced myself to go outside one day this week when the sun was out for a bit and I’ve been taking some extra vitamin D.

Exactly after all the monitor troubles last year I got a bit of a scare to run into troubles again, but happy it was one a cable this time. Although I am still not sure how it got broken after such a short time, but at least it was an easy fix.

  3. It’s hard to be enthusiastic about anything, including books, when you’re feeling blah (physically or mentally.) At least the computer issue was resolved relatively easily.

The roasted chickpeas sound good. I’m not so sure about the beet chips LOL! (I’m not a fan of beets.) I had a similar problem when I tried making baked sweet potato fries. I couldn’t get them to come out right; they were just soft and floppy. I suspect they have to be deep-fried to get the right mix of crisp outside, soft inside. But I hope you can solve your beet chip issue!

    • That was the case for me this week, I just couldn’t get enthusiastic about anything because I was feeling blah. I hope next week goes better. And I am glad the computer issue was easy to solve.

I like beets, but just don’t know what to do with them, the beet chips need more tweaking for sure. They either stayed soft or got crunchy and burned. I have a few ideas to try for the beet ships next time and hope that helps. The roasted chickpeas are great, I plan to share my recipe on the blog eventually.

  4. I made roasted chickpeas a while back. I had to roast them for a long time before they became crunchy like I wanted. Now I can find them in the store already roasted to add to salad. I posted a new recipe on my blog the other day where I made roasted shrimp and vegetables.

    • I roast mine for about 30 minutes on 200 degree Celsius/ 392 degrees Fahrenheit. I haven’t seen them in stores here yet already roasted, that sound shandy!

  5. Sorry you didn’t feel well. I think when you aren’t feeling all the great it can affect so much especially reading.

I LOVE Chickpeas and need to learn to roast them. I would bet my daughter would like that too. I have never made chips before but I love beets but never make them myself. Like I use the ones in the can instead of buying fresh. I think I am scared to mess them up but my goal this year is to focus on using fresh so maybe I will try it some tie.

Are your pancakes different than the ones we have? I never really thought of that. Do you make them with eggs? Not sure if you use eggs since you are vegetarian or vegan?

I hope this week is better for you, Lola! Happy Reading! xx

    • Yeah I always feel that when I am feeling off my reading gets influenced as well, on the other hand reading a good book can cheer me up a bit when I am feeling off.

I really don’t like chickpeas, but I like them roasted as the weird texture gets better that way. They are quite easy to make too, I’ll have to make some time to type out the recipe so I can share it on my blog. I definitely need more tries before the beet chips become a success.

Yes Dutch pancakes are really flat and much larger than American ones and they’re baked with butter and the dough is different too. You can look up the dutch wikipedia page for “Pannenkoek”, that has a picture of them.
I prefer American ones and I can make those and always fail when trying to make dutch ones. I am a vegetarian, so I use eggs for them. I think there are vegan substitutions for them tough.

    • I hope next week goes a bit better again, but I am glad I had a good audiobooks to listen to at least, it really helps to have something fun to get lost in when feeling off. And I am glad the monitor problem was an easy fix. I might make some pancakes again tonight.

  6. Computer frights are some of the worst! We are thinking all our hard work will be lost!!! Now I hope you’ll feel better and have fantastic reads next week Lola!

    • I am glad it only was a cable problem with my monitor and not something worse. My reading mojo seems better this week, so that’s good.

    • I am glad the cable was an easy fix. It really is annoying when you have a bunch of meh reads in a row. This weeks reading was a lot better luckily.

  7. Sorry about the meh reading streak, but glad to hear you’ve broken it now! That would definitely be scary about the monitor stopping working, but at least it’s just the cable which is a pain but costs way less.

Yum, roasted chickpeas are great. I’ve bought them at the store before. Unfortunately I can’t eat them anymore what with all my crowns and messed up teeth, they’re too hard :-/ Maybe you can try something different to make the beet chips work? Like lower heat for longer time or if you have a dehydrator or something?

I’m glad you liked Chaos Station!

    • Yes I am glad I seem to have broke through the meh reading streak. I got a scare when my monitor stopped working and I am glad it was an easy and cheap solution this time as it was only the cable.

I don’t think I’ve seen them store bought here before, but that’s great you can buy them at your store. Sorry you can’t eat them at the moment with your teeth :(. I think lower heat or not precooked beets might work. I don’t have a dehydrator, but that probably would be a good solution. The recipe I used called for letting them soak in salt for a bit to get some of the fluids out.

  8. I HATE when anything goes wrong with my computers or appliances or phone. I’m thrilled it was solved quickly. I made gluten free cinnamon rolls which turned out yummy. I’ve been making all the different soups but we do eat meat so maybe they are not for you, unless you substitute. The Next Day Turkey Soup I made would also be good with chicken and maybe you could make it with Vegetable broth and no meat. I hope this week is full of energy and great reads for you! • I am so glad it was an easy fix this time. It also freaks me out a bit when something goes wrong with my computer.

Oh cinnamon rolls that sounds good. I have a few vegetarian soups I like to make, although some soups are not as easily made vegetarian.

  9. Oh, I love roasted chickpeas! Can you send me that recipe when you get a chance? I’d appreciate it. 🙂 I haven’t been cooking much lately but I did try a candied almonds recipe over Christmas that was really good. It mostly uses maple syrup so it has a light sweet taste. I enjoyed them enough to want to make another batch soon!

    • Yes I’ll do my best to finally type the recipe out next week and will send it to you then. It’s so easy and yummy to make :). Oh candied almonds that sounds good too! I am tempted to give that a try. How do you make them?
