sunday post

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
It’s a chance to share News. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

What happened this week?

This week was still full, but a bit more quiet than last week, which was a nice chance. Some of the normal stuff happened like work on tours and I wrote some blog posts. I got some new books, yay! Oh and I added one of the new promo banners Michelle from Limabean designs made for me to my sidebar. I am really happy with the design.

On Monday I went out for lunch with my mom, we ate bagels and had a good talk. Then on Wednesday my boyfriend and I went out for dinner to a sushi and grill restaurant. The food was delicious and there’s still enough to choose from for vegetarians as well. They have some really good egg sushi, what’s your favorite sushi?

My boyfriend and I started watching Firefly, lots of people seem to love this series. I have to admit I had my doubts at first when the first episode started with a confusing battle/ war scene, but after that I started liking it. And the atmosphere is really well done. The combination of space travel while at the same time a low tech world with guns and an almost western feeling is definitely original. There’s some humor and interesting complex characters.

Picture of the Week

Joerie
The past few weeks we took care of my boyfriend his parents their parrot, Joerie, and cat, Quito. Quito has visited us a few times now, but this was the first time Joerie visited as well. I never had a parrot so it was quite hard to read his body language and figure out what he wanted to at times, as he likes to scream but most of the time we had no idea what he wanted. He is kinda cute though and his feathers look pretty if he stretches them. He also loves to do eat dry bread and other crunchy food. This is a picture of Joerie in his cage.

What did I cook for dinner this week?

Things are about to get Wicked in New Orleans.

Twenty-two year old Ivy Morgan isn’t your average college student. She, and others like her, know humans aren’t the only thing trolling the French Quarter for fun… and for food. Her duty to the Order is her life. After all, four years ago, she lost everything at the hands of the creatures she’d sworn to hunt, tearing her world and her heart apart.

Ren Owens is the last person Ivy expected to enter her rigidly controlled life. He’s six feet and three inches of temptation and swoon-inducing charm. With forest-green eyes and a smile that’s surely left a stream of broken hearts in its wake, he has an uncanny, almost unnatural ability to make her yearn for everything he has to offer. But letting him in is as dangerous as hunting the cold-blooded killers stalking the streets. Losing the boy she loved once before had nearly destroyed her, but the sparking tension that grows between them becomes impossible for Ivy to deny. Deep down, she wants… she needs more than what her duty demands of her, what her past has shaped for her.

But as Ivy grows closer to Ren, she realizes she’s not the only one carrying secrets that could shatter the frail bond between them. There’s something he’s not telling her, and one thing is for certain. She’s no longer sure what is more dangerous to her—the ancient beings threatening to take over the town or the man demanding to lay claim to her heart and her soul.

Bea’s English escape plan:
• Work in a real British castle
• Quality time with bestie
• Figure out what spotted dick really is
• Fall for bestie’s older brother. Hard.

Bea Gillespie would rather do anything than teach summer school math two classrooms down from her ex-fiancé. So when her best friend, Scarlett, invites her to England for the summer to work in her family’s castle-turned-hotel, she jumps at the chance.

Now Bea’s an ocean away from her problems at home, but she’s got a bigger one. A British one. Scarlett’s older brother, Jasper, is at Castle Calder for the summer, too. And he’s as sexy and smart as Bea remembers. Two years ago Jasper came stateside, and he and Bea shared a hot weekend. But that’s all it was — a weekend. One she purposely didn’t tell Scarlett about.

It didn’t feel like much of a secret until now. As Bea falls for Jasper, what started off as a fling begins feeling more and more like the kind of thing you’d gush about to your best friend. If you hadn’t been lying to her all along.

Her past…or her future?

It’s taken Amy Finley ten years, but she’s finally ready to return to her hometown of Heartache, Tennessee, and face the past. She just never expected that would include reuniting with her high school sweetheart and now town sheriff, Sam Reyes. Or that Sam’s latest case would lead right back to the darkest chapter in her life.

The attraction between Amy and Sam is definitely still there, not to mention that she’s sure she could quickly grow to love his cute baby son. But can he forgive her for keeping her secrets? Can she forgive herself?

Wow! Lots of tours! I’m not a bird person, but something about that bird is absolutely gorgeous. I imagine it must be interesting to have him screaming and not knowing what he’s trying to tell you. I try to eat vegetarian, but have a hard time, even though I know it’s super healthy. No, no, no to sushi (lol), but glad you enjoyed the food and some time with your boyfriend. Happy Sunday! RO

    • Yes I am excited at how many tours I have live at the moment.

It could be a tad frustrating at times as bird language is hard to understand.

The sushi restaurant was really good. I mostly ate the egg sushi, which is my favorite and some of the other dishes they sold.

    • After multiple persons recommended Firefly to my boyfriend and me we decided to give it a try, it’s really good so far. But it got cancelled after one season, so there’s only one season.

  2. I loved making the banner and promo banner for you! I am so happy you liked it.

Glad you have been busy. It’s nice to have busy work to get you through the day. I need to get my butt moving on blog posts since I am a touch behind again with the kids getting out of school.

I don’t like Sushi but I am glad you enjoyed it 🙂

Parrots can be very nosy. I care for my parents cockatiel every so often and he is nosy. Sometimes he just likes to talk and talk and scream and talk. But he is still a cutie and I love him. 🙂

I hope you have a great week, Lola! Happy Reading! ox

    • I love the two promo banners you made for me! Again thanks so much for making them and all the awesome tour banners as well 🙂

I also was behind on blog posts, still are a bit behind to my taste, but it’s been good to get a few posts written this week. I hope I can get a few more written this week.

I like sushi, especially the egg sushi. The restaurant also has other Japanese dishes besides sushi, so even for people who don’t like sushi there are enough options.

This parrot was adorable, even though he was quite nosy. He can’t talk as far as I know, but he does sorta try and makes weird sounds. And he loves hard sounds or music and starts screaming loudly, lol. But it was fun to have him around for a bit.

  3. Glad your week was productive. Neat that you got to visit with your mom and then go out for special time with your boyfriend. Haha, had to laugh about struggling to understand the parrot. I pet sat my grandmother’s cockatiels once and I didn’t get those birds at all. 🙂
I’ve not really eaten much sushi so I don’t really have a favorite. I liked a vegetable sushi though I can’t remember what was in it.
    Your Nutella cookies sound good.

Oh, I need to see about getting that fourth Joanne Rock book.

    Have a good week, Lola!

    • Yes it was a good week :). It was fun to have the animals visit for a while, but the parrot is really hard to understand. Sometimes we just googled his behavior to try and figure out what was up.

They had a cucumber sushi at the restaurant that was pretty good. I think avocado and cucumber are quite common for sushi. They also had some seaweed sushi here.

The nutella cookies were really good, I hadn’t made them in a while and was suddenly craving them.

I was so excited to see the fourth book up on netgalley. I still have to read the third book first though, but I am looking forward to continuing this series.

  4. I’ve never had a parrot or any bird and I’ve only been around a couple when neighbors had them. One time I was at my neighbors house and she had her very large parrot and jut put the bird on my shoulder. I’m like, ok now what. Before I could react the bird was turning his head to look right at me and when I said hello, he said hello back right in my ear. They can be really loud. LOL

Ken has been taking care of a neighbors cat all week while the poor guy was out of town after his dad passed away. A very friendly cat. I’ve never had a cat as a pet either.
Mary Kirkland recently posted…Product Review: Hemp Hearts by Manitoba HarvestMy Profile

    • Yes parrots sure can be loud, I never realized until I met this one. That’s fun that bird you met could talk and said hello back. Joerie can only imitate sounds, but not fully talk.

That’s sweet Ken is taking care of that cat. I never had a cat as a pet, but my sister had one and lived with us for a bit and I used to stay over my boyfriend and his parents their house, so I know Quito quite well too. Cats can be great pets.

  5. Yay! Glad you liked Firefly. It’s one of my favorite series. Once you get to the end of the episodes, look for the movie Serenity. Since the series got cancelled, Joss tried to wrap up some things by making a movie.

Having worked with parrots in a pet store, sometimes they like to scream just to hear themselves. Sometimes they do it because they want what you’re eating, or just attention in general. Does Joerie talk? It’s always fun to hear them imitate people and other things.
Silvara recently posted…What Time Of Year Do You Read More Books? My Profile

    • Thanks for letting me know about the movie, it’s nice to hear it got sort of wrapped up like that. It’s a shame the series got cancelled. We have seen the first 5 episodes or so by now and it’s really good.

Yes Joerie loves to hear noises or his own voice I guess. He was from another owner first and they never thought him much, when my boyfriend his parents got him they weren’t able to teach him much. He can sort of imitate sounds, but not really talk. And he always seems to know when we have food and starts screaming for a piece.

    • It’s a shame Firefly is only one season, we’re about halfway through now and I already have the feeling I am going to be sad it’s only one season.

    • This was actually a pretty bloggy week for me too, I’ve been busy the last few weeks so it was nice to go out a bit and do some more blogging this week.

    • So far I am really enjoying Firefly. They returned to my boyfriend their parents last week, they stayed here for three weeks, it was fun.

I agree Michelle does great work, I am really happy with this promo banner she made for me 🙂

    • I don’t really like fish, so I stick to the egg and cucumber sushi and they had some other dishes as well. Not all sushi has raw fish, they also had some sushi with baked fish, veggies, egg and such here.

I have enjoyed that author her books so far, so I am curious about A Brit on the Side! And it sounds like a fun one.

  6. Beautiful bird! I’ll bet that was interesting. 🙂 It would be fun to hear him chirp and scream (maybe?) and while I’m not sure I’d want t oown one it would be great to have one visit like that. It would be interesting to see the cats’ reaction too.

I never got far w/ Firefly, I think I saw the same beginning and didn’t watch any more, but everyone raves about it so it must get better. Maybe I’ll try it again, it’s on Netflix. Hope you enjoy!

Wicked looks good, like that cover!
Greg recently posted…Sunday Post #148My Profile

    • Yes it was fun to have him visit for a while, I wouldn’t want to own one, but it was fun for a few weeks. The cat is more scared of the bird than the other way around, they are so used to each other by now.

The beginning of Firefly is so confusing and it doesn’t make sense until later. It wasn’t really a compelling start, but after that it gets really good. I just don’t get why they used that start of the first episode.

It sure is a pretty cover and I heard good things about the book, so couldn’t resist grabbing it while it was on sale.

  7. I watched the movie Serenity not knowing it was based on the Firefly series lol. We liked the movie but now I need to watch the show. It’s strange how it lasted only 1 season but still has a lot of fans. You had another busy week with the blog tours and pet sitting. I hope you have a good week!

  8. Ooh the cover reveal banner looks great!

I’ve never had sushi, but I don’t even like the taste or smell of cooked seafood, so I definitely don’t want it raw lol. And to be honest I don’t know exactly what else is in sushi, so I’m not sure what vegetarian sushi would be like. Is the egg raw or is it cooked? Because there’s no way I would eat that raw.

My roommates in college loved Firefly, so I tried to watch it once like last year, but I think I barely made it through the first episode. I just couldn’t get into it.

Aww that parrot looks so cute! I wouldn’t know how to understand what a parrot was trying to communicate either as I’ve never really interacted much with them. But he looks like he’s smiling in the photo lol.
Kristen @ Metaphors and Moonlight recently posted…The Weekly Update: 6/26/16My Profile

    • Thanks! I am really pleased with how the banners turned out. I also have one for review opportunities, but wanted to use this one first.

No the egg isn’t raw in the sushi, it’s baked in a Japanese way and then put on top of rice and with seaweed around it. Most sushi places also have things like cucumber, avocado and seaweed sushi. They also had a few baked fish sushi here, besides to the raw ones.
This restaurant was a sushi and grill place which means they also had a lot of other Asian dishes. Thing like noodle soup, baked/ grilled fish and meat, spring rolls etc.

The first episode of Firefly wasn’t the best one, but I really started enjoying it after that. That’s too bad you couldn’t get into it.

The parrot was adorable, but as I’ve never been around parrots it was really tricky to understand him.

    • This parrot could be a bit loud at times, but he didn’t make much of a mess. Maybe parakeets are louder? I never had any birds as pets myself so I don’t know much about them.

  9. What a beautiful bird! I know nothing about caring for birds, but you know I love owls. <3 I wish I could have one some day. Sounds like you had a nice week! I love Japanese eggs and egg sushi. The sweet, salty combination is really good (though a little jarring the very first time you have it). And I'm so glad you're liking Firefly! That's one of my favorite shows of all time. The characters and the low tech scifi! As you can probably guess, it had an influence on me with the Nogiku Series. 🙂 Have a great week!
    S. J. Pajonas recently posted…Sunday Update – June 26, 2016My Profile

    • I remember a friend of my sister used to have an owl, so I guess they can be had as pets.

The egg sushi are my favorite, they taste so good. They also had some cucumber sushi which I tried and a tofu bag type sushi, which was really good too.

That’s interesting Firefly had an influence on the Nogiku series! I do see a few similarities with the low tech sci-fi aspect, there are not many books/ series with that. So far I am really enjoying Firefly, I might do a review post about it once we finished watching this season

    • We’re definitely sticking with it, I am glad we watched past the initial scene as both my boyfriend and I were very skeptical we would enjoy it by then, but now we’re really enjoying it. We just finished the mud town episode, it was great! I didn’t realize they had funko pops of firefly.

    • Some restaurants have very little options for vegetarians, so it was nice to have enough to pick from here. I quite like sushi and this restaurant had some really good sushi.

    • I can imagine that if you’re allergic to seafood that sushi doesn’t really sound appealing, but yes they do have some fish free varieties with egg, vegetables and this restaurant even had some tofu bag sushi.

So far I’ve quite enjoyed the Japanese food I tastes, even though I am a picky eater as well. I just adapt most of the dishes I find to my own tastes.

    • No he doesn’t fully talk, he can imitate sounds though. But when the parrot was young he lived with other people who didn’t put much attention in teaching him to talk.

I am not a big fish fan either and rarely eat it, but luckily they also had other type of sushi here and other Japanese dishes.

I’ll have to look for your review of Wicked, glad to hear you enjoyed it. I was glad I could pick it up while it was on sale.
