In the last few weeks you probably have heard me talk about this new series I got hooked on, the Lily Singer series by Lydia Sherrer. I am so happy I got the chance to interview Sir Kipling for today’s post and to tell you a bit about the kickstarter Lydia is doing for book 3 and 4. Oh and there will be an exclusive Sir Kipling story you can get by backing! Or all four copies, in e-format or in paperback. Make sure to check it out!

Anyway I got to interview Sir Kipling for today’s post. Sir Kipling is the cat of Lily Singer, the main character of the series, Sir Kipling is one of my favorite characters in this series and you get to see a glimpse of his snark in the interview. I hope you all have fun reading it! Bold is Sir Kipling and anything written normally is me. And if you leave a comment, Sir Kipling might stop and reply! He has been bribed with milk to come back by and reply to comments. So if you have any questions for Sir Kipling leave them in the comments 🙂

Interview with Sir Kipling

Hello Sir Kipling! Thanks so much for making the time to do an interview. I am so happy to have you stop by my blog Lola’s Reviews! I always enjoy reading about you, Lily and Sebastian!

Sir-Kipling-full-color-finalOkay first can you tell us a bit about yourself as many of my readers probably don’t know you yet?

Well, that would be their problem, not mine, now wouldn’t it?

…um, I suppose, but…are you sure you understand what an interview is? Didn’t Lily explain this process to you?

She did, but there was a lot of blathering on about “being polite” and “behaving,” so I stopped listening.

I see. Well how about this. If you answer my questions, I’ll make sure Lily gives you some milk.

…whole milk?

Uh, I guess.

With cream?

I’m sure that could be arranged.

You drive a hard bargain, human. But I will submit myself to your questioning.

Ooookay! Now that we have that out of the way, why don’t you tell us a bit about yourself?

I am a cat.

…and?

You said a bit.

Yes but…*rubs temples* I think I understand now why Lily rolls her eyes so much. Why don’t you tell us a medium amount about yourself, alright?

Very well, if you insist. I am a long-haired domesticated house cat, though the domesticated and house part are just to make the humans feel in control. Cats domesticated humans, not the other way around, and anyone who presumes to contain us obviously doesn’t spend much time around cats. But I digress…my human, Lily, is a wizard, and I spend the majority of the time I’m awake keeping her safe. Several months ago, I was…gifted with abilities that seemed to make my job much easier such as being able to converse directly with my erstwhile human until it became clear Lily was hell-bent on getting herself into as much trouble as humanly possible. Something about wizards taking over the world or some such nonsense. It’s all extremely dull, but then most adventures are. There’s nothing like a good long nap to liven up your day.

I see, well, thank you for that medium introduction. Now, I hear there is a Kickstarter going on at the moment for Books 3 and 4 in this series. What exactly does a Kickstarter entail?

Say you wanted to make an adorable cat video of me, but had no milk with which to bribe me to cooperate. You would create a Kickstarter project and promise to give a copy of said video to anyone who pledged money to help pay for the milk. Of course, such a project would attract millions of adoring fans, and so the project would get funded and you would have plenty of money to buy my milk. The video would be made and sent to all the fans, and I would live happily ever after with a lifetime supply of milk.

Uh-huh. So, basically, you’re saying a Kickstarter is a way creators can gather support to fund a project, and all the supporters get something in return?

Correct. For our Kickstarter in particular, it will cover the costs of publishing Books 3 and 4 of my…I mean our…adventures, and our supporters will get extra special rewards that can only be acquired through the Kickstarter and no where else. For instance, I shall be penning…er, pawing…my very own autobiography especially for this project, and only our Kickstarter backers will have the privilege of laying eyes upon it. That’s just one example of the exclusive rewards. If you like, you can find the project here and read all about it.

Sounds amazing! I’m sure our readers will want to check that out. Now, tell us about how you and Lily met?

I was sent by the Creator to watch over her in this mortal life. I descended to her upon the wings of an angel with the holy light of kitten-ness shining all about me.

Wait, really? I mean…are you pulling our leg?

*Sir Kipling does not answer, simply starts licking his paw unconcernedly*

Aw, come on, you can’t leave us hanging like that. Because it would be awesome if that actually happened.

*Sir Kipling pauses, considering* I was adopted.

Okay…instead of the first thing you said? Or in addition to?

*Sir Kipling goes back to licking his paw*

Alright, fine. I give up. So what kind of themes does the Lily Singer series deal with?

Me

Um, I think you misunderstand. I meant, what sorts of situations and issues are dealt with in the books.

Entirely too much excitement, and not having enough milk. It’s a never-ending cycle of torture, I can assure you. The humans, though, have it lucky. All they have to deal with are puny things like truth, trust, friendship, and duty. They’re running around trying to responsibly use great power and stop evil villains who think the ends justify the means, while I’m sitting here starving to death and without even a bit of shut-eye to comfort me. Completely scandalous, if you ask me.

Yes, tragic, I’m sure. Let’s say I wanted to recommend this book to someone. What kind of people will enjoy reading about your and Lily’s adventures?

What sort of question is that? I’m a cat, aren’t I? Who wouldn’t want to read about a cat?

You do realize not everyone likes cats, don’t you?

It’s an illusion we allow them to maintain. Anyone who thinks they don’t like cats just hasn’t met the right cat yet.

Riiiiight. So anyway, besides cat lovers, who else might enjoy reading these books?

While I can’t vouch for the child’s sanity, the author was recently told by a 12-year-old that her books were better than the Harry Potter series.

Haha! Okay, so Harry Potter fans, I guess because it’s full of magical adventure?

Yes. And pesky stuff it is, too. Always mussing up my fur.

Oh no! You poor baby. Do you want a band-aid for that?

Only if you are willing to donate several layers of skin along with it, as that’s what I will extract if you come anywhere near me with that tone of voice.

I’ll pass, thanks. Let’s move on to a less dangerous question. What can you tell us about your role in the upcoming two books?

Well, besides saving the world and everyone in it, my primary concern in Books 3 and 4 are getting my human to admit her true feelings for her witch friend, the Blackwell boy.

Oh really? Do tell. We want all the juicy details!

There’s not much to tell. They are perfect mates for each other, and are obviously in love, everyone can see it. If I didn’t know them better, I’d say they were being purposefully cat-like in their affected indifference. Cat’s, after all, do not ask for things, not do we admit we want them. Rather, by pure force of will and feline wiles, we gently nudge our humans in the direction we want. But humans are not cats. Pride is unbecoming to humans, after all. Only cats and dragons do it justice. So, obviously, their behavior is unacceptable. But fear not. I have a plan…

Yes? Go on.

*Sir Kipling blinks* That would be telling.

Oh, you tease. I suppose it’s only fair, though. Otherwise, what would be the point of waiting for the books! To finish out our interview, how about a few fun questions! What’s your favorite food?

Hmm, a difficult question that deserves the deepest and most serious consideration. Salmon.

Haha! I thought you said it deserved deep and serious consideration?

It does, and I did. Just because we take an hour to decide if we want to be out or in doesn’t mean we take that long for every decision.

Okay, who is your favorite human?

…Lily

Why did you hesitate?

A mother or father may love their children more than anyone in the world, but that doesn’t make them their favorite people. Sebastian is much more fun to be around. Though I will admit, no one knows where all my special spots are quite like my human. Her belly rubs are to die for.

Favorite hobbies?

Following Lily around when she thinks she’s locked me up me at home.

Favorite sleeping spot?

On Lily’s lap. Always.

Aw, well with that we’ll call it a wrap. Thanks so much for doing this interview, or rather, submitting yourself to my questioning. I’ll be sure to tell Lily you did an excellent job and deserve extra milk tonight.

See to it that you do.

You certainly are a handful.

So my human tells me daily. She has threatened to put me on a diet.

I’m sure you’ll survive. That’s all for now. Thanks so much for reading and be sure to check out the Kickstarter for Love, Lies, and Hocus Pocus – the Lily Singer Adventures Books 3 and 4. You can also find the first two books in the series on Amazon

About the author

Lydia SherrerAuthor of the Love, Lies, and Hocus Pocus magical adventure series, Lydia Sherrer is a fantasy author whose goal is to leave this world a better place than when she found it. With an urban fantasy series, multiple short stories and a novella under her belt, Lydia has been writing for over a decade and enjoys nothing more than a good book, a cup of tea, and a comfy chair in the sunshine.

Growing up in rural Kentucky, she was thoroughly corrupted by a deep love for its rolling countryside, despite the mosquitoes and hay-fever. She was instilled with a craving for literature early on, and her parents had to wrestle books away from her at the dinner table. Though she graduated with a dual B.A. in Chinese and Arabic, having traveled the world she came home and decided to stay there. She currently resides in Louisville, KY with her loving and supportive husband, and their very vocal cat.

With an enormous passion for life, creating things, and discovering the world, Lydia crams her days with all sorts of adventure when she’s not working on her next book. She not only loves to play her ocarina (think Zelda), but also enjoys traditional archery, cosplay, larping, and art. She believes dark chocolate and tea are legitimate sources of nutrition, and one day hopes to visit every country in the world.

In addition to her modern fantasy series, Love, Lies, and Hocus Pocus – the Lily Singer Adventures, with two books out and two more due in April, Lydia Sherrer’s short stories have appeared in several anthologies. Her award-winning short story Hope, a post-apocalyptic tale of survival, won in Almond Press’ yearly dystopian short story contest and was awarded a place in their annual anthology, Apocalypse Chronicles. Her non-fiction essays have appeared in the Young Salvationist Magazine.

Lydia is not just out to write good books, but to make the world a better place, one story at a time. Her goal is to write with a purpose and inspire others to reach for their dreams, because she’s reaching for hers and loving the adventure.

  1. “He has been bribed with milk to come back by and reply to comments.” Hahaha, that cracked me up. And Sir Kipling definitely has a lot of snark. I love all the cat-ness in the interview lol. Naps, very exciting.

This really does sound like a fun series that I’d like to try. I also love the artwork!

    • That wording about the milk was the author her idea ;). I think it’s amazing how she came up with that whole snarky personality for Sir Kipling and I think it really shines through in the interview. It was so fun to interview him :). I do have to agree with Sir Kipling that a good nap can be great at rimes.

Yes the artwork covers for this series is so amazing and I love how perfectly it fits the characters in the book. And even Sir Kipling looks exactly like he is described. I can’t wait to hear what you think of this series if you give it a try 🙂

  2. Lol… what a fabulous interview, Lola. I love the snarkiness and general feline smugness permeating the whole business. I’m definitely going to have to put these books on my TBR pile – are they suitable for pre-teens, do you think?

    • Thanks :). I really love how Sir Kipling his personality shines through in the interview.

Yes I think they would be suitable for pre-teens. Depends a bit on the kid and the parents ofcourse. The characters are adults and deal with some adult problems too, but the books read a bit like cozy mysteries, low on the gore and details, but lots of fun.

    • Hi sjhigbee! I just wanted to put in a quick word in addition to Lola’s comment. The books are about adults dealing with adult problems (work, relationships, saving the world, you know the things we adults do every day 😉 ). I wrote the books for about 13+ in mind in terms of appropriateness (no sex, no gore, one or two cuss words), and the reading level is about 13+ too in the sense that I like to use big words to make kids pick up a dictionary and learn! But I DO have 8, 9, 10+ year old readers who are just extremely smart little kids, so it really depends on the reading level of the pre-teen and the parents opinions on what they want their kids to read.

  3. How adorable! Sir Kipling is as sassy as that cat in Sabrina The Teenage Witch. And if there is some cat-nimation featuring him, I’m sure that Kickstarter will be more than a success

    • He really is fun to read about with his snark :). There will be a short story written from his point of view if the kickstarter is a success!

    • Dear Human,

P.S. My mistress informs me that my answer is not sufficient. She says that, while I am able to get away with that sort of non-answer in our own adventures, that doesn’t fly here. I was not aware of anything flying, but since she has threatened to with-hold my nightly bowl of cream, I suppose I might as well explain:

We do not increase our density or weight when you want to get up. We seduce you with our cuteness and it is your own will that feels heavy, heavy at the thought of such scandalous evil as disturbing our peace. None of you realize the amount of training we put into cultivating our humans, training you, shaping you to our will. If this knowledge disturbs you, blame my mistress, she insisted I be frank.

      Sincerely,
      Sir Edgar Allan Kipling

  4. Judy Ptacek

I liked your cat interview. Having two cats myself l am sure my cats would appreciate Sir Kiplinig’s honest answers and agree about not enough cream lol

    • Glad you liked it! I had so much fun reading it when I got it back from the author. Sir Kipling’s personality really shines through. I like both cats and dogs. Even though I never have had a dog and only a cat for a little while. But I heard rat behavior is a bit similar to dogs and I have had rats. They are the best pets in my opinion ;).
