RIP Skittles

We just put Skittles to sleep, she was very sick for two weeks now. She got antibitoics for an ear infection, but since saturday evening she got worse. She almost didn’t eat and drink anymore and moved with difficulty. We think she had a lot of pain. She could hardly move anymore and had loose a lot of weight. We went to the vet with her today and decided to put her to sleep. We will miss you Skittles!

Skittles

To remember her I want to share some memories of her and some pictures. When we decided to get rats I really wanted a siamese rat as I love their colouring. We finally found a rattery that had a nest of young rats with a siamese rat and decided to get al our rats there. So Skittles is the reason we got the other rats as well. I thought it was fun to name a pet Skittles and because skittles was white, we decided that was a good reason to name her Skittles as all colurs combined become white. Some of her nicknames where Skit, Skittle Bittle and Skit-a-Bit.

Skittles was always our most active rat, she was always running around and she liked to dig in the bedding. When she was around half a year old she got something rat. The tear fluid of rats is red and her eye was always surrounded by red from then on. We tried some salves but it didn’t work. She didn’t seem to feel any pain for it and she was still as active as always. We think she has some stress because she was the lowest ranking rat. She liked to lie on my lap and be petted on the top of her head.

I’ll miss her so much, but I know it was the right descision to make as now she doesn’t have pain anymore. Below are some pictures of Skittles. I didn’t take any pictures of her when she was sick, because I don’t want to remember her that way. I want to remember her healthy and active.

    • Thanks for commenting again, Michelle. It’s been so hard to lose her and the cage feels so empty without her and now every time we mention something about ‘all our girls’, my heart breaks again because we miss one of them.
We’re cuddling a lot with the other rats, they seem a bit off, like they know what happened to their sister. Pita has been really grumpy and refusing to get out, while the two grey girlies (Smarties and Snickers) don’t mind all the extra attention.

Thanks for the hugs! In moments like this I can really use them and it glad to know I’ve got some good friends who help me through this!

    • Thanks for your kidn words. It’s just so difficult to loose her. There’s so much that reminds us of her.
And I keep thinking I what if’s and wonder if there was something we could’ve done different. But rationaly I just know that an ear infection is dangerous for a rat and even if she survived she might have always had balance issues and that’s a difficult life for a rat as well. The other 3 rats seemed a bit off, but they seem a bit better today.
She was such a sweet rat and we’ll miss her πŸ™

    • We where a bit afraid it would come to this, but nothing can prepare you for losing a pet :(. She was a great rat and we’ll always remember her. It’s been a hard week and there are so many things that remind us she isn’t here anymore.
