Catching a WarlockCatching a Warlock (Grimalkin Academy: Catacombs #3)
by Laura Greenwood

My Rating: 4 stars

Genre: Paranormal Romance
Age Category: Young Adult
Type of romance: Reverse Harem

Blurb:
Finding the family spell wasn’t all Daphne wanted it to be.

With side effects from her cat-shifting making themselves known, Daphne has to race against time to fix them, especially as her new enemy wants to do everything she can to get Daphne expelled.

Can Daphne and her friends figure out a way for her to stay at Grimalkin Academy?

Catching A Warlock is the third and final book in the Grimalkin Academy: Catacombs trilogy. It is paranormal academy with a reverse harem romance.

My Review

Just like the previous two books I enjoyed this one. It’s a solid ending to the series and I liked seeing how things played out. It did feel that this book was quite full with lots of things that happened, the problem with Daphne getting cat features while not in cat form, the romance/ reverse harem aspect and a mean sort-of ex of Heath who wants to get Daphne expelled.

I enjoyed reading how everything got resolved although some scenes lacked a bit of impact for me. This book is quite fast paced with short chapters which makes for an easy read. I enjoy the style and it works well for these books. There are some things that get resolved a bit too easily, but I also appreciate there is little drama and complications. It keeps things feeling pretty light and uplifting. I did notice we never hear anything from the teacher from book 1 anymore who seemed to dislike Daphne, I thought for sure she would return in later books, but guess not.

The romance only turns into a reverse harem in this book and was excited to see how it happened. I thought the way the harem developed was a bit off, but I did like how they all communicate and are all open for the idea. Unfortunately I am still not a fan of Cade, while it’s clear he has feelings for Daphne, I never felt that Daphne was interested back in him until they start dating and even then it only seems to be because he’s her boyfriend. I do really like Bradley and Heath, they both seem like great guys and I feel Daphne’s connection with them and wish it had stayed with just the two of them. I like the few scenes we get of them as a group and I hope there’s a bit more of that in the last novella as I wanted to see more of them after they all get together.

I liked seeing a bit more of the magic in this book, but it still feels like we barely scratched the surface, maybe that’s because this series needs to be read alongside the Grimalkin Kittens series or maybe it’s just because the world building is more of the setting and flavor than the main focus. You only get the details that are relevant to the plot. I liked what we do see of the magic like the cat spell and a bit about potions, curses and charms even in this book, but it still stays pretty limited.

To summarize: this was a solid ending to this series. Like the earlier books it’s an easy read, with short chapters and a fast pace, which I enjoyed. This book has quite a lot going on with multiple plot lines that need to be resolved. I liked finding out how everything got resolved. The way the harem develop felt a bit off, but I like how they form a tight group and communicate well. I am still not a fan of Cade as never felt like Daphne was interested in him before she started dating him. Bradley and Heath are great tough and I liked their relationship with Daphne. I would’ve liked to see a bit more of them as a group as that only happens so late in the series. The magic and world building stays a bit limited to only the details that are relevant and I would’ve liked to see more, but I am glad we got some more bits in this book. All in all this is an enjoyable series and I would recommend it to those looking for a YA academy series with magic and reverse harem romance with no heat.

  1. Glad it finished strong for you. Odd that the teacher made such an impression and didn’t show up again. Looks like Daphne has come into her own with this one.
