Lola’s Ramblings: What I do when I am very excited about a book

LolaRamblings

Lola’s Ramblings is a feature on my blog Lola’s Reviews where I ramble on about a book related or a non-book related topic. These are discussion type of posts where I talk about a topic and readers can weigh in on the topic in the comments. Usually these posts are everything that doesn’t fall under any standard header, like tours, cover reveals, memes, challenges, recaps or reviews. Lola’s Ramblings posts are discussions of a certain topic and my point of view on them. The banner for this feature is designed by Michelle from Limabean Designs.

When it comes to books I am very excited about reading I often have a weird combination of feelings/ emotions were on the other hand I want to read the book as soon as possible because I am so excited about it and on the other hand I am also a bit afraid the book isn’t as good as I hoped. So I wanted to talk about the strange mixture of emotions and behavior I go through with books I am really looking forward to and am curious to hear how you deal with books you’re excited about!

What I Do When I am very excited about a Book

  • Read it as soon as possible. When I am really excited about a book I often want to read it as soon as possible. This can be because I am so excited about the book I want to read it soon, but also because sometimes my excitement wanes if I don’t read a book soon. And being excited and looking forward to read a book can be fun, so if possible I want to read books that I am excited about as soon as possible.
  • Don’t read it immediately. I can’t remember ever dropping my current read to start a book I am very excited about. I always finish my current read first. If I read a book as soon as possible it will be at the earliest after I finish my current read.
  • Postpone reading it. Often with books I am very excited about I postpone reading them, I am not quite sure why I do this as when you’re excited about a book you usually want to read it as soon as possible. But I believe it has something to do with looking forward. I am someone who liked looking forward to things and knowing something good is in my future can make me currently happy. Yes I know I am weird. So if I get a book I am very excited about I sometimes just wait very long to read it. I can remember I was very excited about the Visions by Kelley Armstrong as I loved the first book and waited almost a whole year after receiving it to read it. A whole year. Which totally defeats the purpose of buying the hardcopy just so I could read it as soon as possible. I was so looking forward to this book that instead of reading it as soon as possible I postponed reading it for a long time so I could bask in the feeling of knowing I still had a book to read that I probably would enjoy a lot. I still have her latest YA series unread, I own the first two books and by now the third one released half a year ago already and I am perfectly content not reading them. Same with the last two books in Jennifer Estep her Black Blade series. I loved the first book and now I get happy every time I have two more books to read in that series and they stand there unread on my shelf making me happy. One of the few books I actually buy and I am going to have them stand on my shelf unread making me happy, it’s just weird. Sometimes I feels like I am waiting for the right moment to read them or the looking forward part is half of the fun and I ruin that by reading it.
  • Be afraid it isn’t as good as I hope. And often when I am really excited for a book I am afraid it won’t be as good as I hope. As when you’re really excited for a book the disappointment will hit you even harder when it’s not as good. And there is not much worse than a disappointing read and I know that with the books I am most looking forward to reading I also set the highest expectations and thus the most chance to feel disappointed when the book isn’t as good as I hope.
  • Look forward to reading the book. Mostly with books I am excited for I am just really looking forward to reading it. I can remind myself that I still have to read book X and get happy because I am looking forward to reading the book.
  • Feel sad when there are other books I should be reading first. This is also one of the times when I blame myself for accepting too many review copies as I might have some books I really should read first before I can read the book I really want to.
  • Review copies have less risk of getting postponed. If I get a review copy of a book I am really excited about I less rarely will postpone the book. As then I don’t feel as guilty not reading the other books I should read first because hey I am still reading a review copy. So it’s often the books I buy myself I end up postponing, while I more often indulge in the urge to read the book immediately when it’s a review copy.
  • Other books can be less enjoyable. This doesn’t happen always, but sometimes when I am so excited and in the mood to read a certain book, anything else I read in the meantime just doesn’t seem as good as I rather would be something else. Being a moodreader can be tricky stuff and forcing myself to read a book while I rather read another can make me enjoy the book I force myself to read less. Which is a shame, so sometimes I believe it’s just better to read the book I really want to first as then I might read the book I should be reading later, but I also might enjoy it more when I do.

What do you do when you are very excited about a book?

  1. I don’t think I have any one thing I do when I’m super excited. I feel like I do try to read the book as soon as possible, but I also don’t drop what I’m currently reading. And you and I are mood readers, so I don’t know about you, but sometimes I can be dying to read a book but still not quite in the right mood for it. So in those cases I hold off. Oh, but I’m ALWAYS in the right mood if a book is in one of my favorite series.

I don’t think you’re weird because you like looking forward to things. I feel like the anticipation of things of often where most of the fun comes. Like, being given a gift is nice. But having gifts under the Christmas tree for weeks and wondering what’s in them and getting all excited is more fun. I don’t think I’ve ever waited an entire year to read a book though lol.

I completely get what you’re saying about review copies. Sometimes I get a book for free on Amazon or something, then I see it offered on NG, and part of me wonders if I should just request it since I know there’s a big chance I won’t ever end up reading it if it’s not a review copy. But last week and this week I’ve actually gotten a whole bunch of review copies that I am in fact super excited about, so that’s the perfect situation! But then, you know, I still gotta be in the right mood lol.

    • These are more different things I might do when I am excited about a book, but sometimes it doesn’t really fit into any pattern. I am glad to hear I am not the only one who doesn’t drop their current read for a new one.

And yes sometimes I can be excited for a book and still know I am not in the right mood for it and rather wait til I am. Although sometimes I have trouble judging when I am in the mood for it, especially as I don’t want to ruin a book I am excited for by reading it in the wrong mood. So then I might overthink things a bit, moodreading can be a difficult thing.

I definitely agree with you there that the anticipation of things is often the most fun. Things like vacation or gifts or even gifting gifts are all things were the anticipation is part of the fun.

If a book is a review copy it feels like I have an excuse to read it right now while with books I buy myself or get for free I also might be less likely to actually read them.
Getting review copies of books you’re excited about is the best. I was just finishing my current rad today and then got a review copy of a book I am really excited about and now I can start it tomorrow and I am in the mood for that genre, it’s the best!

  2. I usually want to read it as soon as possible, but if I don’t then it sometimes happens that I don’t read it right away at all. Like unless I jump right into it it might end up sitting? Kinda like you said. I’m not sure why I do that! And yes to other books being less enjoyable- if I’m trying to finish a book to get to the GOOD one lol it can be irritating if the current book is dragging its feet ha ha. I think it’s fascinating to see how we all handle this kind of stuff. πŸ™‚

    • Yes it seems to be the case for me too, either I get to it as soon as possible or else it can happen I won’t get to it until much later. The again sometimes it is nice to just have it stay on your shelf for a bit.
It’s a shame when your current read is dragging when you want to start a new and exciting read. And I agree it’s definitely fascinating to hear how we handle things like this.

  3. Ha! Yes, I was laughing through your explanation about getting excited because it sounded very familiar right down to the excuses I use about grabbing a new review books and reading it before the others because hey, it’s a review book, too. πŸ˜‰

I looked right at a couple books on the shelf that I was wanting pretty badly, but there they sit waiting. I got them right at their release date and then was content to let them sit either in anticipation or dread. I am the worst about series finale books- scared to death they won’t live up to expectation which is heightened b/c it’s the end. I can get a bit psycho about books. πŸ˜‰

    • I always like it when I can get a book for review that i am excited about as I can push it to the front of the pile without feeling guilty about it, because hey it’s a review book. I actually just finished a book that I was excited about and immediately read because it was a review copy. It’s nice.

I have so many of those books on my shelves like that, I got them on the release and couldn’t wait to read them, yet they still stand there unread now.Series finales definitely are the worst as then you have so much expectations and hopes and don ‘t want to be disappointed and sad because it’s the end.

  4. I’m very spontaneous in my reads. If I’m excited at the prospect of reading a book, I tend to read it there and then, unless the price is extortionate, and in that case, I’ll sit gnawing on my nails waiting for a price reduction.
Sometimes, I plant to read a book after the one I’m reading for example, and I’m all hyped up and impatient, but when comes the time to read it, I might change my mind. It’s because I tend to go through genre cycles. I will want to read mysteries for weeks then I’ll switch to romance then after a few more weeks, I’ll opt for scary stories! (I’m the same with food lol, wanting to eat lots of the same for a while)

    • I am a moodreader and also sometimes go through genre cycles, but I also like to shake it up and might change my preference fast again. Especially on my ipad I rarely read the same genre for a long time in a row. Then I might be in a mystery and paranormal mood and just keep switching between the two or I read an urban fantasy and then a paranormal romance when I am in the mood for those kind of stories and switch between two similar genres.
I also plan ahead what I might read next and I don’t always end up reading that next, because I change my mind or my mood or I get a new book to read instead. It can be nice to just pick up a book right now when you’re excited about it.

    • Same here, those bought books that I am excited about always seem to stay on my shelves the longest. Although I also like the postponing aspect sometimes as it’s nice to have books you’re still looking forward to.

  5. I only postpone if I have review books I Have to read and then I can’t wait to finish the review book and get to the one I really want to read. I figure I’ve already waited long enough for it. I do admit to buying sequels on release date for books I liked a lot and then not reading them right away sometimes though. But if it’s one of my favorite authors I will be reading it probably on release date. Like a kid on Christmas!

    • I often postpone even if I don’t have any deadline review copies. There are a few authors who’s books I buy as soon as possible and then not reading them for a long time. It’s nice to still have some books to look forward to.

  6. I have done all of these, Lola! I have even stopped reading what I was currently enjoying to start one I was very excited about! On the other hand, I still have some books that I bought when they were released (over a year ago) that I haven’t read yet – even if I am still excited about them. The reason why I haven’t read those, though, is that they are the last book in a series I love, and I don’t want the series to be over. Very strange logic, I know! But for me the series isn’t over yet, you know?
    Great post!

    • That’s the only thing I’ve never done, stop my current read. Although I did once DNF a read to start a book i was very excited for. I have so many books still on my shelves that i am excited about even while they have been there for months. And I can see how that happens with last books in the series, it’s always sad when you have to say goodbye to a series. I agree the series doesn’t feel over until you actually read that last book.

    • I agree those books you’re really excited about re also the ones that make me nervous the most and worry that they aren’t as good as I hoped. I couldn’t do that dorp everything and read the new book, it would feel wrong. I only stop a book when I DNF or when I am finished.

  7. I find it depends on both the book and my mood at the time I finally get my hands on it. I go through periods when it’s really hard for me to start a new book; I crave the familiar instead. At other times, my attitude is more, “Bring it on!” When I’m in the “give me something familiar” phase, I can read new books by authors I already know and love (and trust), because there’s enough familiar in their style and I have at least some sense of where they’re likely to go. But to try a new author, I have to be feeling more adventurous. I’m pretty sure this is tied to my level of stress or anxiety. (It’s also why *whispers* I sometimes peek ahead to see what’s coming up.)

    • I agree it definitely depend son my mood and the book which of these I do. Sometimes it’s nice to pick up books by authors you already know and know what to expect. I agree that there is always something familiar in an author their style across books. I never dare peek ahead, i feel like it would spoil the book for me.

  8. I’m very similar to you when I get a new book that I’m very excited about. I rarely stop one book to start a new one. I’m always concerned that a book won’t live up to the hype. For me, I usually see reviews for books before I get them. Even if I get a review copy, since 99% of my review books are audio, I still don’t get them until after release. It makes me both more excited or sometimes disappointed, depending on how the reviews are going.

    • It would feel weird to stop my current read as I never pause in the middle of a book. i always DNF it or finish it. I usually don’t read too many reviews of a book before I pick it up, but it does depend on the book. I can see how with audio’s that’s different as audio’s often are published later.

  9. I usually postpone, and I have NO idea why. It is so ridiculous, because I clearly wanted to read the silly thing, right? I think part of the reason is the build up, and that I am scared it won’t live up to whatever is happening in my head. And then of course, there are books that have to take priority because they’re review copies. And sometimes when it is a series end, I just legitimately don’t want to be done with the series! These are all definitely things I do, too! Great post!

    • I know what you mean, you would thin that because we’re excited about the book we try and read it as soon as possible instead of postponing it! Sometimes I think I just want to keep the feeling of looking forward to a good book and I’ll loose that if I actually read the book. And I always feel like review copies do take priority, so the books I buy myself often get postponed.
