Lola’s Ramblings: Do you schedule posts?

Posted January 15, 2015 by Lola in Lola's Ramblings / 60 Comments

LolaRamblings

Lola’s Rambings is a feature on Lola’s Review where I talk about me. Usually these posts are everything that doesn’t fall under any standard header, like blog tours, book blitzes, cover reveals or reviews. Lola’s Ramblings posts are are personal discussions of a certain topic. Sometimes about book related topics and sometimes about non-book related topics. If an Lola’s Ramblings post is about a non-book topic it gets the non-book content posts tag. This feature was previously known as About Me. The banner for this feature is designed by Michelle from Limabean Design.

When I signed-up for Blog Ahead in November 2014, I was thinking about scheduling posts and how I handle it. I also wondered if everyone scheduled posts or if they also post things on the fly, so I decided to use that topic for this week’s Lola’s Ramblings posts.

Do I schedule posts?

Basically every post posted here on Lola’s Reviews is a scheduled post. I like to write a post at least a few days in advance, just because I like to do things in time and it makes me feel organized. In the case of cover reveals it might be a day before the post is scheduled to go live, but most other posts I have scheduled earlier ahead. In fact I am writing this post on 16 October, 2014. For my Lola’s Ramblings posts I write them when the inspiration strikes and I decided to schedule one Lola’s Ramblings post a week, so basically every time I have a new idea I schedule it for the next open week. This system works well for me and so far I can keep up with it.

Which posts do I schedule ahead ad how early?

So most of my posts are scheduled ahead, but it also depends on the type of post how far ahead I schedule them. I often like to be 1 or 2 months ahead with Lola’s Ramblings posts. The same is happening with my new feature Lola’s Kitchen, I have them scheduled up to the first weke of May at the moment. I like working ahead and it feels nice to see all those posts that I have scheduled. With memes I usually schedule my Sunday Posts early in the week, usually on tuesday, for the next sunday and then keep adding things to the post until it goes live on sunday. My monthly memes like Read Play Blog and My To-Be Read List are usually scheduled a week or more in advance. While it might sound weird to schedule posts so far in advance it works for me.
This year my goal is to stay around the 20-30 posts scheduled in advance, having a buffer like that feels nice, although these are mostly Lola’s Kitchen and Lola’s Ramblings posts it still feels nice to have those scheduled ahead already.
scheduled posts

Do I schedule review posts?

Review posts are an unique type of post as I usually write my reviews right after I finished a book. And while I do post my review on Goodreads immediately I like to schedule it on my blog, usually I schedule review posts for the next open slot on my blog. I like to limit my posts to one a day and keep track of it all in my google calendar, so if I have written a review I check for the next open day and schedule the review on my blog for that date, usually these will be monday, wednesdays or satrudays. In the case of blog tour reviews I simply schedule them for my scheduled date.

How did I work in the past and how did this change?

In the past I sometimes scheduled posts on the fly, if I finished a book I simply wrote my review and posted it on my blog. nowadays I don’t do that anymore as I prefer to schedule them for a new day. I always schedule my posts for 9AM in my time zone, CEST or CET (Central European Time). It just feels right to have each post go live on exactly the same moment and every morning when I wake my post for the day is live already and I promote it somewhere on that day. Scheduling my posts gives me a sense of structure and it’s also the reason why I switched from posting on the fly to scheduling. I also like it when each posts can be the top post for a while day and thus why I only schedule one post a day and make sure they go live at the same moment every day.

Do you schedule your blog posts in advance or do you post them whenever it’s ready? And if you schedule posts, which type of posts do you most likely schedule ahead?

  1. Good questions and perfect for starting the New Year off with an organizational topic. I’m actually the associate reviewer at our blog so I don’t have final say in the scheduling and I don’t handle the posting at all. Shari is an organized blogger and from what I can tell she works on posts once a week and keeps a buffer of about two weeks to a month of posts out. We tend to schedule tours, guests posts, spotlights, special events a few months in advance and reviews along with update posts closer to when we actually want them to post. The aim is to have at least one post per day, but no more than three. We’re flexible and will shake things up on rare occasions, but for the most part stuff is planned ahead.

    • Now that you mention it, it was good timing with this topic and totally coincidential, but let’s not talk about that ;). Sounds like you and Shari have a nice system in place for your blog, I wish I could have a buffer of a week or two in total, but I am reading so slow I usually manage to schedule my review for the next week and then still have soem open days left, ah well. At least my Lola’s Kitchen and Lola’s Ramblings posts are scheduled ahead. I wish I could to the one post a day thing, but I am getting better with not feeling bad when I don’t have a post on some days. Usually tuesday is my standard empty day on the blog.

  2. Wow! That’s amazing, that you’ve got so many posts scheduled for the upcoming months. We also schedule posts, but I think we get one month ahead at the most. That’s usually because we schedule reviews on Monday (for Karolina) and Thursday (for me), so if those slots are already taken, the reviews move up to the next week. We’ll also schedule a few personal or random posts here and there. Sometimes we do last-minute things, other times we’ve got next week completely booked. I also like knowing that we’ve got things covered!

    • I think being one month ahead in total is great! I would love to be ahead a few weeks with everything. I am only ahead with Lola’s Kitchen and Lola’s Ramblings post so that’s only 2 posts a week. My review days are usually monday, wednesday and saturday and when I write a review I just put it in the next open slot.

  3. Until may ?! Wow ! I’m afraid the only post I prepare in advance is the Sunday post. Just like you, I draw the main lines then keep adding stuff until sunday. But apart from that… I have some stuff in reserve for the Lusting for covers/Top off tuesday, Cat thursday and Hottie of the weeks meme, but I pretty much figure them up on the day I post them. If I’m being very serious, I prepare them… the day before ! I try to keep writing reviews just after I’ve read the books, but sometimes I’m in the mood, sometimes I’m not. It’s like a good resolution, right ? When you start doing it, you’re eager to do right, then… things get in the way πŸ˜‰

    • That’s only for my weekly Lola’s Kitchen posts I am scheduled up till May. And as long as your system works for you, why change it. I like drafting my Sundfay Posts in advance, because else I am faraid I forgot something and it’s easy to just add things to the draft until it’s finished.

    • I have Anna her Blog Ahead challenge to thank for this, once you’re ahead with some posts it’s easier to stay ahead. I am still working on building a buffer with my review posts though as I am usually only one review post ahead and that’s not a lot.

  4. Whoa. I love love LOVE how organized you are about your blog posting! It speaks to the Capricorn in me πŸ™‚ I do write a lot of my blog posts ahead of time, but I don’t schedule them unless they are COMPLETELY done. Most of the time, I let them sit in Draft mode on the blog until I’m ready to hit the button and occasionally I have a few blog posts ready to go ahead of time. That’s about it, but mostly because I concentrate on my fiction writing. I love my blog and blogging, though so I try to update at least twice per week, if not more. In November of this year, I plan on doing NaBloPoMo and post everyday (instead of doing NaNoWriMo because that has never worked out for me).

    • I usually re-read my blog posts for Lola’s Ramblings and Lola’s Kitchen the sunday before they go live. I make so many typo’s and spelling mistakes it’s necessary. Or sometimes I still have to take pictures, but have the post scheduled already and then write down somewehere or rmember I still need to do those pictures. For some reason when I only draft a post I forget about them, so I just schedule them.

And I can understand with your writing and other stuff going on you don’t have as much time to blog. I do enjoy your blog posts and like you said you still post a few times a week, that’s regulary enough! Blogging really takes a lot of time, but it’s fun so it’s worth it πŸ™‚

I never heard of NaBloPoMo before. I did participate in Blog Ahead challenge last year were the goal was to schedule 30 posts ahead, I didn’t get that many done, but it helped a lot.

  5. I’m definitely a scheduler, and I love it. I have set days that I post reviews (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays) and Tuesdays I post TTT. And then Fridays and Saturdays may vary. I always draft up my reviews weeks before I post them. When I finish a book, I schedule it for the next available review day (or sometimes I have a specific day if it’s an ARC). For TTT, I actually usually don’t put it together until the day before. That’s just because I’m lazy.

I’m not somewhat to type something up and then just post it. I like to think about it for at least a few days, and proof it a few times.

    • I just love scheduling posts! Glad to have foudn another scheduler!
Since january I have some set days for different type of posts as well, like Monday and Wednesday for review or tours, Tuesday is my no post day, Thursday is for Lola’s Ramblings, Friday is for Lola’s Kitchen and Saturday is review or My To-Be Read List meme. I have a review scheduled for Wednesday, but that’s the only review scheduled so far, I am hoping to get ahead with reviews eventually as well.

I also like to think about it for a bit and then do another spelling check before it goes live. I even had a few posts like this were I changed a few more things before it went live as I drafted it months ago and some small things changed.

    • lol, as long as it works. I don’t really think it matter how you work, but I fidn it interesting to see how other people work as scheduling posts is something that happens behidn the scenes and you never know if someone schedules or not just from looking at their blog.
Taking a week off or bloggin more during one week could work to get ahead.

  6. I try to always schedule ahead. When I was jobless, I’d have posts scheduled for 2-3 weeks ahead. Saturday discussion posts were usually even further ahead than that. But now that I’m working again, I’m lucky to have book reviews scheduled a week in advance. Saturday discussions are still set up for a few weeks, but my Fantasy Friday is usually written and scheduled the week of.

Though lately for whatever reason, I get on in the mornings to check my posts and they all keep “missing” their post time. Like, I schedule all my posts to post at 8am my time, but then I have to go in and actually post the review/discussion/etc. Because it isn’t doing it on it’s own like it’s supposed to. No idea why.
Silvara recently posted…Changes (Valdemar: Collegium Chronicles #3) by Mercedes Lackey (review)My Profile

    • Weirdly enough I am more ahead nowadays then when I was jobless. Although it makes sesnse that now you’re mroe busy you have less tiem to get posts scheduled ahead.
And it’s nice to have discussion posts scheduled ahead for a few weeks. If I don’t I always start stressing as they take quite some time to write.

How weird that your posts don’t get posted on their posting time πŸ™

  7. I schedule posts whenever possible. As soon as I get the html for blitzes or tours I set up the post and schedule it. I am a bit late adding my review posts in. Since I got Ultimate Book Blogger plug in I am better about at least getting the layout of the post done weeks before I post it. Some months back I had every post scheduled like a week in advance. Now I just do a day or two in advance. I can’t remember the last time i wrote a post and then published right away, they are at least done the night before.
Karen Blue recently posted…Discussion Post: Giveaway RantMy Profile

    • I am the same with tours and blitzes I like to schedule them as soon as I get the materials and then add in the rest whenever I get that or reviewed the book. I don’t have the Ultimate Book Blogger Plugin yet, but I heard good things about it! I don’t remember the last time I wrote and post and then published it, it just feels nicer to schedule them even if it’s for the next day!

  8. This is a great topic!
Seen as I write a lot of my posts quite late at night (I’m a bit of a night-owl!), I usually schedule them to go live at a more sociable hour, when people are more likely to be reading them! I also like to reread them a few times before they are published, so scheduling them gives me opportunity to look over them before they publish.
I seem to be having the same problem as Silvara at the moment though, and they keep missing their schedule which is super annoying!
Laura recently posted…What genres don’t you read?My Profile

    • I always wonder if it matters when you post your blogs as I publish mine at 9am, that means it like 3 am in the US? I do notice that I get most comment in my evening/ night, but some posts like these already have some comments in the morning.
Just like you I like to re-read my posts, especially posts like my Lola’s Ramblings posts as I usually just ramble on and make lots of typo’s which I only catch when re-reading.

The posts not going live on schedule might have something to do with cron jobs, I once heard about that from another blogger once. Do you schedule your posts on whole hours? That seems to work for me.

  9. I absolutely LOVE scheduling posts ahead. It gives me a really good buffer time to do other things to generate more content or to do other things. Right now, I have January all scheduled up. I have to schedule my Sunday posts for February. πŸ˜›

If I schedule something in advance, it’s usually a discussion post. I’ve had many times when I’ve scheduled discussion posts far FAR ahead than the review posts I scheduled. πŸ™‚

    • Oh that’s nice you have all January scheduled up already! I aim to get at leats a week or two my posts scheduled ahead, but I don’t like scheduling my Sunday Posts ahead for some reaosn Tuesday is early enough for those.

Yeah discussion posts are my favourite type of post to schedule ahead as well, it’s just so nice to know you already have the following months covered.

  10. Yes, I definitely schedule my posts, Lola. And I think it’s really nice, to have at least two-three weeks of posts scheduled, because that means that if I don’t have time at all for blogging for a few days, it is not a problem.
I used to only post three reviews every week, but since last summer, that has gone up to five – because I just read so fast, and I figured if I have a review up every week day, plus the memes I usually participate in, that’s OK.
Some of my meme posts are scheduled a very long time in advance – I have Waiting on Wednesday posts scheduled until the end of March, I think.
I wish I was better with my Up Close and (un)Conventional posts, but I don’t have a lot of good ideas for those so they are only posted sporadically.
Have a fantastic Friday, Lola, happy reading.

    • I feel so envious for those of you who have whole weeks scheduled ahead, I really hope I can get ahead with scheduling review posts as well, so I can get a few weeks ahead. Maybe I should read a few novella’s or sign-up for some blitzes or tours.
Just like you I think it’s nice that if I don’t feel like blogging or am very busy for a few days it’s not a problem as I have posts scheduled ahead.
I think having one review each week day is great if you read so fast. I usually only have one review each week because I only read one book a week.
Coming up with topics for discussion posts is the hardest and one of my biggest fears is running out of topics to write about. Especially as I really wnat to keep doing my one discussion post a week thing.

  11. You know I’m a big believer in scheduling ahead. I try to keep 60-80 post ahead if possible. And that’s all kinds of posts. I have some scheduled out until next Nov. Some are maintenance posts. Some are “for fun” reviews that I try to only do on weekends so they get scheduled way ahead at this point.

I do some on the fly though. Sometimes like you inspiration hits and I decide to go for it and just put it out there instead of waiting. lol

  12. 25 scheduled posts? Wow! That’s amazing, Lola! The maximum I’ve done is maybe 3? Lol!

Although I pretty organized when it comes to blogging, I don’t usually do scheduled posts. Instead, I have a planner where I have the post due dates all planned out. So I start prepping a post maybe a week before it’s a due and continue to make changes throughout the week. This way by the due date comes, I’ve done all the amendments and have somewhat polished post to hit ‘publish’ on.

I really wish I could try the scheduled posts though, it seems less stressful! Great discussion, Lola! πŸ™‚

    • Sounds like you have a nice and organized way how you work for your blog. I actually just hit schedule, because drafts don’t work for me, but usually they need some small changes or proofread even though they are tehcnically scheduled. It’s fun hearing how other people do scheduling and organization as it’s soemthign you usually don’t know :).

  13. I used to NEVER schedule posts. Like I would post on the fly and whenever I like it, but I’ve realized how bad that practice was because I was constantly thinking, “CRAP I NEED TO POST TODAY” and then having to think WHAT TO POST for a post that I need to be posted in 3 hours. Wow, that was a mouthful.

I’ve always been disorganized and I hate that part about me. I finally initiated scheduling especially since I have two co-bloggers now. I’m struggling to keep up and oftentimes have to do the post a day before, but I’ll get there. One day I’ll be the scheduling superwoman who’s two-three months ahead! Wahaha!

    • That seems stressfull indeed, I never can come up with a good diea for a post when I know I have to write it soon, so I like being ahead for a few weeks or months.
It seems that having co-bloggers does help with getting more stuff done ahead. And even I sometimes have to write a post a day before. The only posts I am really good at with scheduling are Lola’s Ramblings and Lola’s Kitchen. I hope do to better with scheduling reviews ahead once as well.

  14. I do schedule and in nearly the exact same way as you do. I try to fit arc’s in for review around the publication date but apart from that I just add in a review to the next available date. The same with memes and other misc posts. I don’t have discussions scheduled at the moment but I’m working on that right now πŸ™‚
I love scheduling ahead, it makes everything stress free for me as I’m never writing posts at the last minute.

  16. WOW. Consider me impressed! HOW!? I mean… just how!? I scheduled a post for Monday (it is Saturday night) and I am pleased as punch with myself πŸ˜‰ I would like to schedule posts about a week in advance, sometimes maybe 2 weeks. But not more than that, because I find myself changing things at the last minute, OR going back and making adjustments, or even just “checking” them, and I don’t want to do that.

That being said, I DO schedule every post, but it is usually for about 20 minutes after I finish it. I am just kind of weird about having all the posts go live at midnight, but I am usually wrapping them up at about 11:40 hahah. My goal is to schedule the posts for the week on the weekend, and then only have to comment and such DURING the week. So far… I only have Monday. And a couple others started, but not even close to finished.

I would stress myself out if I wrote the posts so soon before posting them, but if it works for you, why not? My goal is to get eventually a few weeks ahead with all my posts and hopefully get less days with no posts on my blog if I do that, maybe I should just read a few novella’s.

I do make soem adjustments after having scheduled posts, like this one I updated my actual posts ahead for Lola’s Ramblings and Lola’s Kitchen.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  17. I schedule a lot in advance too – though not as much as I’d like. It saves me though, because I’ll hit really busy weeks (like last week) and the blog runs on auto pilot. 18. Wow! Twenty-five scheduled posts is great! I used to never schedule my posts, which made for some really inconsistent blogging. I’ve really made scheduling a priority in 2015 though. 19. I tend to write my reviews right after I finish the book since the book is still fresh in my mind, but usually that happens around 11 PM-1AM at night so posting it is kind of moot. So I schedule it to a date and time that I think would be more reasonable. My blog is a bit new, but I started a Sunday Wrap Up post just to talk about things during the week that happened. Of course with that, I can’t write it out in advance so I just have to write it up the day of. That might take to some time management, of course.

  20. You’re kidding, this was written in October?? I’ve got to give you the world’s loudest applause because you deserve it. I never schedule ahead. I CAN’T DO IT. Which sucks. I write mine on a week to week basis. The past three months have been particularly busy for me so I’ve basically been writing and letting it go live immediately. I’d love to schedule but I’ve got no time to do large chunks of it, you know? I write my reviews immediately but I just store them away. I’ve got quite the backlog going. I actually need to schedule half of February’s posts though, since I’m going to be particularly busy then but I’ve got less than two weeks and no motivation which sucks. I can understand that when life get’s busy it’s nice to just write and post and if it works for you that’s great.

It’s difficult to get ahead with scheduling posts, but once you’re ahead it’s relatively easy to stay there as you just have to write your normal amount of posts to stay ahead.

  21. Before uni, I scheduled ahead by at least a week – then it slipped and I was pretty much posting on the day! However, over the Christmas holidays I managed to get all of January scheduled, so I’m now working on February and hope it will stay like that, at least 2 weeks ahead πŸ™‚

I’m the same with reviews – I just write them once the book is finished, whilst it’s still fresh in my mind.

  22. I schedule all of my posts ahead! I use the hotmail calender to keep track of what posts need to be written (posted in red) and which are already done (green). It also lets me drag and drop if I need to move things around for some reason, and then I just go to my blog and edit the dates of the posts.

For Sunday Posts, I normally draft those up sometime earlier in the week and add books and news as it comes up. But I always try to be completely done by Saturday afternoon. I schedule a bunch of Wishlist Wednesday posts at once. I think I’m done with March now, so in the next few weeks I’ll start on some more. Reviews get written as soon as I’m done with the book and, like you, scheduled in between other posts. Those are normally Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. I’m halfway through June on reviews.

    • I didn’t even realize hotmail had a calendar as well, sounds handy with the red and green colour coding. I use colour coding on my google calendar to keep track of post I have already written and those I’ve only planned.

I do the same with my Sunday Post and try to have them done by saturday afternoon or evening. Wow I am impressed with how far you’re ahead with reviews. I really hope to get a week or two ahead with reviews one day.

  23. I CAN’T. Honestly I feel like I struggle enough to write one post, let alone schedule a months worth in advance. I am in a real blogging slump at the moment though so I really haven’t got any ideas or the motivation to work on any posts.

    • I am the smae with reviews, I read a book a week so then when I finisha book I have a review for next week, I wish I could get ahead for a week or two with reviews, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon. Ah well, at least I have ym Lola’s Rambligns and Lola’s Kitchen posts scheduled ahead. Balancing blogging with daily life can be hard, back in 2014 I took a month focussing to get ahead and once you have a nice buffer and go back to your nromal amount of scheduling, it’s easy to stay ahead.
