Lola’s Kitchen is a feature on Lola’s Reviews where I talk about all things related to food, cooking and baking. These posts can be recipe posts, tens list posts about food or recipes or more discussion type posts about food. I love cooking and spend some time in the kitchen almost every day, so I wanted to give it a place on my blog as well. The banner for this feature is designed by Michelle from Limabean Designs.

For today I thought I would do something a bit different than share a recipe. Instead I’ll talk about my favourite fruits and veggies. Coming up with a top ten for each of them proved to be too hard, so I decided to combine it into one post with two top 5 lists.

Top 5 Veggies

    Red Bell Pepper

  • Red Bell Pepper. If you have read some of my recipe posts you probably know that this is my favourite veggie. I buy anywhere between 4 or 8 red bell peppers each week. I love them and in my opinion they fit into every dish and I will probably add them to almost every dish when possible. As a kid I didn’t like them, but when I became a vegetarian I forced myself to learn to eat this and now they are my favourite veggie.
  • Onion. Onion is one of those veggies that easily adds a bit more veggies to every dish without you being conscious of it. It easily blends into a dish and I like eating onion. It’s yummy and fits in lots of dishes. I enjoy the smell of baking onion.
  • Corn. While I eat this one not as often as the first two I still am a big corn fan. We always have a few cans of corn in storage and now and then buy corn on the crob for dinner as well. I like how corn is a bit sweeter than most veggies and I like the taste and texture.
  • Potato. I’ve always liked potatoes, although I don’t like them bland. I like them baked, in a curry, mashed or any other way. I like how they are fill well and I like the taste and texture as well. I like to add potatoes to my curries or other sauces.
  • Lentils. I am a big fan of lentils, especially in curries. I usually buy them storebrought from cans, but I want to try and buy dry ones once, where you have to boil them first. To see if the taste differs that way. I like how they can be nice addition to a dish and I can easiy pull open a can and add them to a dish.

Top 5 Fruits

    Mango

  • Mango. Since this year we staretd eating more mango and they are one of my favourite fruits now. They are very sweet and delicious. I love the taste of them.
  • Banana. Another fruit I like are banana’s, preferably a little green and not yet ripe, then they are the best. I like how they are easy to peel and eat and make for a yummy snack. I also like to add these to cakes or other bakings.
  • Apple. I like eating apples or putting them in bakings, like apple crumble or muffins. If you buy the right apples at the right time they can be very good and I like the taste of apples. It’s always have been one of my favourite fruits, the only thing I hate is peeling them.
  • Pear. Same as apples I hate peeling them, but beside that I love pears. I don’t buy them as often though as it’s hard to buy and eat them on the right moment and I only like the sweet juicy pears. I dislike the fact that it always feels like they are only perfect on one or two specific days.
  • Peach. I liked peaches and abricots when they are in season. They taste delicious ad sometimes I buy fruit dirnks with peaches in them as I like the taste.

  1. I love red and green bell peppers, onions, corn and potato! Tomato, lettuce and cabbages, too. I also love all the fruits you listed. We have plenty of mango and banana trees back in my hometown. But my most favorite fruit is pomelo and grapes is a close second. I’m not a fan of pomelo or grape flavored food, drinks or candies though.

    • I usually stick to the red bell peppers as I like those the most. I also like tomatoes, but I don’t like them raw, but I love them warm or in a sauce. That’s awesome your hometown has mango and banana trees. Usually candies that should taste like a certain fruit, taste very different, so I can see why you don’t like candies with that taste. I had to google pomelo as I hadn’t heard of it before.

  2. POMEGRANATES! I may or may not be entirely obsessed with pomegranates… I’m a huge fruit and veggie fan in general though. I don’t understand those people out there who don’t like fruits and veggies! And I definitely agree about onions. They can make the difference between a “meh” meal and a delicious, flavorful one and go great with so much stuff!

    • If I make red bell peppers and onion as side dish I often bake them in soy sauce. I don’t like kiwi and cherries, but nectarines are good.

  3. This is probably weird, but I love mango flavored stuff but I don’t care for actual mangoes. It’s the same for cherries. I have no idea why this is! And I’ve never had a peach except for in yogurt, but then it’s only tiny pieces.

I love lentils! My mom recently got me hooked on them! I love stewed lentils and lentils with curry! We don’t get the canned ones. My mom always buys the dried and boils them. She sometimes does a whole bag at once and then freezes them. They freeze and defrost really well without becoming mushy, so we always have cooked lentils ready to eat!

    • I don’t like actual cherries, but I don’t mind cherry flavoured candy, so I can see what you mean. I do like real mango and things that taste like mango. Oh peach yoghurt is quite good!

I really should give dried lentils a try, but the ones from a pot are so handy. I didn’t realize you could freeze them after you cooked them, that is handy! That way you can make a big batch and don’t have to use it all at once and the next time you want lentils you can just pull a bag from the freezer.

    • I prefer red bell pepper, I can eat the other colours, but I like the red ones the most. I don’t think I’ve eaten any red potato or not often, but I do like sweet potaotes. Oh and garlic is good too, I like to throw that in a lot of recipes. Mushrooms, cherries and avocado are things I dn’t like, although I am okay with cherry flavoured candy. And blueberries I only like in bakings, not sure if I like black berries. I am a pretty picky eater.

  4. I love so many different fruits and vegetables, too, Lola! Red bell peppers I do love, and I really have to have tomatoes of some kind in my house. At all times! Because that’s something that goes with absolutely everything. I love all kinds of berries, too, and we grow cherries, strawberries, raspberries and blackberries in the garden. We also grow three different kinds of tomatoes – but none of that really helps right now, as the time for eating those fruits and vegetables fresh from the garden is over for this year πŸ˜€
I can’t really think of any fruit or vegetable I don’t like at all – and my kids are the same way! My girls fave meal involve spinach, and the boys love freshly made veggie soup πŸ˜€

    • I also like tomatoes, although I usually buy them weeks in a row and then weeks not. I prefer tomatoes warm or in a sauce as I am not a fan of raw tomatoes. It does goes well with a lot of other veggies indeed. That’s awesome you grow your own fruit in your garden. If I ever get a bigger house with a garden or bigger balcony I really want to grow some of my own herbs, veggies and fruits too. I am pretty picky when it comes to good, so there are also veggies and fruits I don’t like.

    • I also like tomatoes, I prefer them as part of a sauce or curry or arm, I don’t like them as much raw. I am gradually starting to like green beans more, but only in certain recipes.
I also like strawberries when they are good. Blueberries I usually only like in bakings, like pancakes or muffins.

  5. Omg, this is a hard question! I like a lot of veggies and there are so few of them I dislike. Eggplant is the vegetable I both love and hate. When it’s peeled and fried, I love it. Otherwise I hate it. When it comes to fruit, I have definite favorites: watermelon (I ate a whole watermelon every week when I was pregnant with both kids), any citrus, apples, strawberries, mango, and grapes. Mmmm.

    • I am pretty picky when it coems to food, so coming up with ym favourite was relavtively easy. I have a few of thsoe veggies and fruits too that I only like when prepared in a certain way. Like how I don’t like blueberries, but I love them in muffins or pancakes. I also like watermelon, although I don’t buy it often. Strawberries can be really good too whne they’re in season. I also liek grapes, but they aren’t my favourite.

  6. AAH! I adore bell peppers (we call them capsicums here, though), and actually only started eating them when I was 11-12, because my mother hated them and said they were spicy and so did my aunt and then my brother, the sweet thing, got me onto them. He promised they *weren’t* spicy at all, and I tried one and have adored them since. They’ve got such a fresh, interesting flavour, and you’re right- they do go well with most things.
You’ve got me craving pears, now! I think they’re pretty good here, at the moment, so I’ll have to remember to buy some. My favourite fruit used to be nashis, which are a kind of apple/pear crossover, but now it’s apples. I really love apples.

    • We call them paprika in dutch and I still use the wrong term in english sometimes. That’s weird your mother said they were spicy, only the hot peppers are spicy. That’s good your brother got you to try them eventually.
We got some pears this week, I hope they are good. I think pears and apples should be good here around now. I never heard of nashis before, but they sound pretty good!

  7. Mmmm lots of yum! Onion and green pepper are two of my favorites. I love eggplant and potatoes too. Hmmm then tomatoes.

For fruits I don’t eat a lot of them because they usually hurt my mouth from the acidity. I can do a bite or two okay then I’m out. But I love pineapple. Grapes, strawberries, oranges in moderation. I love bananas for banana bread but rarely eat them raw.

    • I prefer the red bell peppers, although i eta green ones too now and then. Tomatoes are good too.
I like pineapple, but usually have enough after a few bites. I also like strawberries and oranges, although I prefer orange juice over atcual orange because I hate peeling them. I never have made banana bread so far, I really have to try that one. I have made banana muffins though and I like those.

  8. I love veggies and fruit so much. My fav veggies are mushrooms, red bell peppers, onions, spinach and tomatoes. My fav fruit are bananas, grapes, strawberries, blackberries and blueberries. I do love lentils too and like you have only had the canned version. They are so handy and are such a cheap way of adding flavour and bulk to a dish.

    • I don’t like mushrooms at all, I can’t stand the texture for some reaosn. Spinach and tomatoes are also yummy. And strawberries and blueberries I also like to eat now and then. The canned lentils are so handy, but I also want to try and eat fresh ones once.

  9. I love mangoes, but this is new for me. I’ve had them in the past, but I always thought they tasted like pine trees. Now I can’t get enough of them, and I usually eat them for breakfast with a cup of coffee. I also really love lychee– they are sweet and have a floral flavore– but they’re really hard to find in the U.S. Oh! Grapefruit! I also really love grapefruit.

Veggies…I love broccoli (never raw), corn, tomatoes (even though they’re technically fruit), cauliflower, green beans and snap peas. Oh, and I pretty much have onions and bell peppers with every meal it seems.

    • I always liked mango’s, but only in the last year or so started eatign them more regulary. Thes epast few motnhs’s the mango’s have been a little less good, so I didn’t buy them as often anymore.
Lychee’s are hard to find here as well, I am not really a fan of them.

Same here I have onion and bell pepper with almost every meal. I love them. I also like broccoli, but haven’t found a dish i really like them in yet. I also like corn and tomatoes. Cauliflower only in a specific dish.
