Blurb:
Asha is a 23 year old graphic designer and blogger living in Richmond VA with a dark past. She grew up in India in a brothel where her mother was a prostitute and came to America to live with her father when she was 13. 10 years later and while she has survived, she lives her life under a strict set of rules and lives fairly sheltered in order to protect herself. Her most important rule: never get involved romantically.

Then she meets Blake, a 25 year old music venue owner with an equally dark past. From their first encounter, Asha finds it difficult to follow her own rules and can’t deny the connection between the two of them.

Can Asha overcome her demons to go beyond surviving to thriving and will Blake be the perfect broken piece to the puzzle of her heart?

My Cover Review:
I really like this cover, the style and colours are pretty unique and it certainly would catch my attention. I like covers that aren’t too busy like this one and the use of onyl a few colours makes for s imple, yet stunning cover design. I like how it looks like the text and drawings are cut out of black and you see the colours behidn it. I like the green and blue colours.

The only thing that I like less and at the same time might be a good thing as well is how the cover doesn’t scream contemporary romance and certainly nto New Adult contemporayr romance. While most cover sin that genre feature a couple, this one doesn’t have any models on the cover at all. Which does make the cover stand out, but from seeing the cover it’s hard to judge the genre.

To conclude: I really like the cover, it’s a simple yet bautifull design and I like how the colours and black is used on the cover. On the other hand it is a very different from what you normally see for covers in this genre. So it is hard to guess the genre from the cover, but maybe the unique cover will make it stand out.

Do you think it’s important that a cover reveals which genre the book is?

    • Oh, and I don’t mind that a cover is somewhat vague about the genre b/c I read blurbs and reviews before ultimately deciding, but I can also see that this might cause trouble for other readers who base their choices on covers. When readers are disappointed in a cover or feel tricked, this can backfire on the author so I think there is a risk in being different.

      • Same here, I usually read blurb and reviews before buying a book, so the genre becomes obvious soon. Although a cover can give the wrong idea when it comes to genre. I think there can be a risk on being different or it can work out well, I guess it depends on the book. With this one I think it’s abstract enough to not really hint to any genre, so readers will probably look further to see what genre it is.

    • New Adult so you’re close. πŸ˜‰

I know it was sort of a risk to go away from the “typical” romance covers, but it was intentional. I didn’t want to potentially lose readers because they bunched it in with other romance books. I can’t tell you how many books I’ve rec’d to people who are not typically romance readers and they won’t read them or take them seriously because of the couple on the front. It’s disheartening because there are some AMAZING stories that I think get overlooked in this category!

On the other hand, my next series is significantly racier and absolutely WILL have a person/people on the covers. πŸ™‚

      • I think it’s a risk indeed, but I think it works well. It’s a cover that attracts attention and people who do love romance books probably will figure out eventually as well.
It’s sad some people won’t take books seriously because it’s romance and has a couple on the cover. I hope this cover can attract some new readers to the romance genre!

  1. I think that overall the cover should definitely give me some type of hint as to what the genre is going to be about. Sometimes blurbs and reviews just dont give you the complete details of a book, but a cover kinda takes you all the way! A few months ago I read a vampire book where the cover totally fit the genre, title said what it SHOULD have been about but it totally fooled me. So covers can be tricky.

    • I think it can definitely help if the cover reveals the genre, although the almost kissing couple trend for NA contemporary romances get’s old after a while, so I also like seeing original covers.
I think covers can be tricky, they can really help sell a book and sometimes steer you wrong as well.

    • I also like cover reveals, I enjoy talking about covers and sharing my opinion about them. Sometimes I am okay with a cover that keeps me guessing about the genre, like this one, as long as it catched my attention. Athough I also have seen some covers which led me to believe it was a different genre, while with this cover I don’t get any idea baout the genre from the cover.

  2. I like this one for the most part too, because of the reasons you stated. I also like that the designer only used one font for everything. Seeing lots of fonts in one cover is one of my biggest pet peeves. I think the cover fits with what the synopsis says, personally. It’s dark, and the synopsis does give off a dark vibe. It’s not really too important for me for the cover to convey the genre of the book, but it would be helpful to know what to expect just by looking at the cover!

    • I agree I think it can look really neat when only one font is used. Although sometimes multiple fonts does work, with this cover I like they kept it with one font. The dark vibe of the blurb and cover fits well indeed, I am thinking the colours might be illustrating the spark of hope or light as the blurb seems to suggest that as well.
On the one hand I think cover should just be pretty and advertise the book, but sometimes adequately displaying the genre can help as well. A different cover might attract new readers to the genre, but it can also mean normal reader of the genre might not read it as they don’t realize which genre it is. Although ofcourse there are other ways to convey the genre as well.

    • Same here, I realy like this cover design, it stands out and it’s pretty with the black, the colours and the flowery patterns.
