sunday post

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer.
It’s a chance to share News. A post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

What happened this week?

This week was such a struggle health wise, but I am also happy as it seems I am finally getting somewhere with my gut issues. So ever since last weekend my gut issues suddenly got even worse, not sure if I caught a stomach bug on top of my usual issues or if things just got worse due to stress or something else, but it was not good. Within an hour of eating something that didn’t agree with me I could tell I ate something wrong and the bloating and gastrointestinal distress got a lot worse.

The upside of this was that I finally managed to figure out what ingredients were causing the troubles. I went from eating a little less gluten, to almost no gluten this week. And I also learned that chicory root is in a lot of products and my gut hates it. Leek that I thought was safe, turned out to cause issues too. I found out my favorite tea blends actually are high-FODMAP and switched to just drinking plain hot water instead to see if that helps. I bought a hot water bottle to help with some of my gut symptoms and I also have been taking some medicine in low doses that helps a bit. It’s been a tough week trying to figure out what was causing my symptoms and changing what I ate to eliminate those for now. With all the stress and figuring things out I also have been feeling very tired and groggy this week or maybe that’s a result of my gut issues, who knows.

So that was a very stressful week of flip flopping between feeling very bad to actually feeling decent for a few hours when I managed to avoid eating anything bad for me. There was a lot of thinking way too much about what I eat, looking too much at ingredients labels and changing what I eat and feeling stressed about it all. But then the few moments when I actually felt good, my bloating went down and I couldn’t feel my gut discomfort were so wonderful and made me feel hopeful I could figure it out. There also was this glutenfree and lactose free cake I found that tastes delicious and it was such a joyful moment.

So this week was mostly dealing with the health struggles. I did manage to get out for a nice bike ride again. I also got a bit of assistant work done for the author I work for. And I found out about some changes with how our doctor now operates with an app I can’t use for questions and one of the doctors we liked not moving to the new place, so I’ll be looking for a new doctor now, so that was not the news I was hoping to hear.

What did I read this week?

Viscounts & VillainyDreaming of Hel

And I DNF’d Guard in the Garden. I also finished two non-fiction books: The Infrastructure Books and Emotional Support Animals, both were great.

This week I blogged about:

Review: Ghosts of the Empire by Janna Ruth
Review: Bespoke and Bespelled by Karen Healey
Review: Custards & Crowns by Laura Greenwood

  1. Urg! So sorry about your gut issues. There’s been an annoying stomach bug going the rounds here that causes bloating and excess gas – both Oscar and I went down with it. It takes a while to throw it off, too. That might also be in the mix where you’re concerned. Hoping you feel a great deal better very soon, Lola!

Sorry to hear both your and Oscar went down with that stomach bug. I wonder if that’s what I caught too and it exacerbated my already existing issues.

  2. My daughter can’t stand the gluten or the dairy or red meat or cilantro, etc. Even with eating the right foods, she get small intestinal bacterial overgrowth 2-3 times a year where she has to take expensive pills to kill the bad bacteria (which is always a bit of a fight with insurance). I hope you will find foods that work well for you and you will be feeling much better.

Sorry to hear about your daughter’s struggles with the SIBO’s even if she eats the right foods. That sounds like a pain. It will take some time figuring out what I can and can’t eat.

  3. That is wonderful that you figured out some of what is causing your gut problems, but sorry you had to figure it out by things making you unwell. Nice that you got in a bike ride and some assistant work. Sorry you had a DNF, but good that you made yourself stop and move on to other books.

Hopefully you’ll have a much better week after figuring out so much, Lola!

I am glad I am finally getting somewhere with figuring out the gut problems, but it sure was a pain to get there by being in so much discomfort. It always makes me sad when I have to DNF a book, but sometimes it’s just better than sticking with a book that isn’t working.

  4. Don’t know how I missed this post! I’m sorry you were dealing with all that, but glad you did figure some things out. I’ve heard about people drinking hot water, but I can only drink cold water, and even then I can only drink it plain if it is with a meal. Otherwise I have to put Crystal Light in it for some flavor.
