My Review

I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it. All opinions are my own.

I really like this series, but unfortunately Winning Back Persephone didn’t quite work for me. I didn’t really get why Persephone broke up with Hades and now she is missing him this whole book and it takes her way to long to get over her stubbornness and tel him she wants him back. I just didn’t like her and while she does change a bit and realizes she should let Hades be how he is and shouldn’t have broken up with him, it just didn’t feel like the break up was resolved enough for me. It also felt like one of those things they easily could’ve resolved by talking to each other and for a couple who has been together for so long and break up over something like that just felt strange to me.

A lot of this book just felt them bumping into each other and trying not to get closer as they know they shouldn’t. They keep trying to keep their distance and being sad as they miss the other. Trying to move on, but failing as no one measures up to other. I just didn’t really like the vibe and it made me feel sad and melancholic and I wanted them to actually talk and resolve things.

Hades was sweet though, I liked how he makes clear he missed her and the scene were he cooks for her is so fun. I also really liked the cereal scene and the focus on how these little scenes of closeness and being able to share the small things with each other is such an important part of a relationship. I also liked Cerebus and seeing them interact with the dog.

I don’t know a lot about the Persephone and Hades myths except what I read in other books, but I liked the twists to this one here. Like how the kidnapping wasn’t a real kidnapping, but staged. they also don’t really rule the underworld here, but live in the god realm. I liked seeing some characters form previous books again as well as hints for future stories.

To summarize: I really like this series, but this book didn’t quite work for me. I didn’t like Persephone, she broke up with Hades and now she misses him, but is too stubborn to admit that. The whole break up two years ago and the reason felt off to me and I felt it never properly got resolved or addressed even if Persephone kinda admits she was wrong. The whole trying to stay away while actually wanting to be closer plot line just made me feel sad for what they were missing out on as they obviously wanted to be together. I did like Hades though, he was sweet and I liked some of the scenes later on in his house like with Cerberus, him cooking for her and the cereal scene. I also liked seeing how the author incorporated the myths in this world. There are some appearances of previous characters and hints of future stories.

    • It really made it hard to get into the story with the whole conflict and reason they broke not working for me. Hopefully I enjoy the next book more again.
