The Gathering (Darkness Rising #1)
by Kelley Armstrong

first read in April 2011, re-read in April 2012. Review is written after the re-read.

Blurb from Goodreads: An ordinary town . . . full of deadly secrets

Strange things have been happening in sixteen-year-old Maya’s small Vancouver Island community–from the mountain lions that have been constantly approaching her to her best friend’s hidden talent for “feeling” out people and situations. There’s also a sexy new bad boy who makes Maya feel . . . “different.” Combine that with a few unexplained deaths and a mystery involving Maya’s biological parents and it’s easy to suspect that this town might have more than its share of skeletons in its closet.

My Review:

I’ve read this book twice now (I almost never re-read books, so that already means something) and both times I really loved this book. This book again proves to me that Kelley Armstrong is a great author. The way she gives us a little piece each time of the greater plot it just makes me want to keep reading to know what more is there. I just couldn’t put this book down, it’s such a great book!

What I really like about this book is the scenery, Maya grows up in a small town surrounded by forest. I would love to live in a place like that and I really like reading about it. I don’t know why, but a nice environment can already make the book so much better.

Another great thing about this book is the story. It is just great and it makes me want to keep reading so I can find out more. I just want to know what is going to happen. Kelley Armstrong creates so many questions in this book, and she doens’t anshwer them all at once but we get them bit for bit. And that’s another thing that keeps me reading, wanting to know more, get more explanation.

I also love the characters. Maya is such a great lead character, she is strong, funny and even recognizes her own faults, this makes her a really strong character in my eyes. I also really liked Daniel, her best friend. He is someone everyone should have as a best friend. He really cares for Maya and is always there for her, protecting her and helping her. When re-reading it I also realizes that I didn’t really trust Rafe at first, but slowly I did like him more. I really want to know more about these characters.

To conclude: I love this book, great story, great scenery and great characters. I love how the author creates all those questions and just answeres a few of them very slowly. And now I am going to read the next book!

  1. I read book one and two recently and bought the last a few weeks ago. I liked them but have to admit I liked her darkest powers trilogy better so far. Loved the adult ones

    • I really love this series, but that might also be in part due to the nature setting. I also loved her adult series and am so sad the Otherworld series has ended 🙁
