Captain Gil Fleming has taken a mysterious leave of absence from the interstellar cruise ship Nebula Zephyr and disappeared. Maeve, the ship’s governing Artificial Intelligence is the only one who knows why he left and where he went. Desperately worried after months of silence from him, she takes drastic steps to organize a small rescue mission of loyal crew members.

Can she manage to create and maintain a humanoid body as ancient aliens taught her to do, driven by her love for the captain and fear for his life? Or will her challenges and anxieties overcome her determination to find and rescue Gil, resulting in failure?

As the humans on her team struggle to accept the AI they’ve known and worked with for years in her humanoid form, they have to place all their trust in her because in the wild territories at the edge of the Sectors civilization where she wants to take them, there’s no law and no help to be had.

Will they find Gil Fleming in time? And if they do, how will he react to Maeve and the others interfering in his private war? Is the love between the two of them enough to overcome the challenges ahead?

My Review

After reading the prequel to this story I eagerly started this one, curious to find out how Maeve and Gil’s romance would progress. I felt like most of their romance and them getting to know each other is in the prequel, so I would definitely recommend to read that one first, while this book has Gil go on a dangerous mission to save his brother. Maeve eventually decided to put a group of crew together to go after him. There’s some danger and action as they try to rescue Gil and his brother.

I liked reading more about Maeve and Gil, I like them as a couple and it was interesting to see how they handled the events in this book. Maeve and Gil are separated for a lot of the story and the moments they are together are often spent getting steamy. I have to admit I missed some of the more touching sweet scenes that the prequel had, although there are some of those here as well. And after so long of Maeve not having a body I could definitely understand their urge to get to the steamy parts, but I don’t really care for the steamy scenes in this book and often skimmed over them.

I wasn’t quite sure what to think of the whole Maeve in a physical body plot line and wasn’t sure if I liked that, but by the end of this book I thought it worked out pretty well and appreciated how that got resolved. I liked how both characters remain true to who they are and also forge an even closer bond together. They really were a great match and I enjoyed seeing them together. I liked the ending and epilogue and I appreciated seeing a glimpse of what their future is like.

The plot had a bit of a suspenseful vibe at times with Gil being undercover and infiltrating a gang and then Maeve and the rest trying to rescue him and his brother. There were some dangerous situations they had to deal with. This book also has some cameo appearances of previous Star Cruise main characters, although a few of those I haven’t read yet and I forgot some of their names, so I sometimes struggled a bit to remember who was and who were a couple. While each Star Cruise book can be read as a standalone, I do feel you probably get some extra fun out of this one if you read about all the previous couples mentioned here already.

To summarize: After the prequel I was excited to read this book and had a great time reading it. There is some danger with Gil going on a mission to save his brother and Maeve eventually assembling a team to find them both. Most of the Maeve and Gil’s romance has been established in the prequel and in this book there was a bit more focus on the physical aspect of their romance. I have to admit I would’ve liked a few more of the sweet scenes, although I could definitely understand their urge to get steamy now Maeve finally has a physical body, but I just am not too fond on the way the author writes the steamy bits and often skim over them. I liked seeing the cameo appearances of some of the previous Star Cruise couples and characters even though at times I struggled to remember who was who as I haven’t read all Star Cruise books and don’t remember everyone’s names. The ending wrapped things up well, I liked the epilogue and seeing a glimpse of what their lives will look like going forward.
