Stakes, suspicion, and secrets in Nightmare, Arizona

When a server is found with a stake through her heart onstage at Nightmare Saloon, everyone at Nightmare Sanctuary Haunted House worries a vampire hunter is in town. After all, the murder happened just before the curtain rose for Allie Nunes, a vampire singer traveling through Nightmare.

Olivia Kendrick and her friends at the Sanctuary must protect Allie and the other vampires, all while trying to find out who slayed the saloon girl. But as more details emerge, Olivia realizes the victim had a dark past and a lot of enemies. Tracking down the killer won’t be easy.

While Olivia works to solve the case, she also has to guide the handsome, brooding Damien Shackleford through a shocking discovery about his missing father. Starting over at midlife wasn’t supposed to be this hard, or this dangerous…

Slaying at the Saloon is book three in the Nightmare, Arizona paranormal cozy mystery series. This lighthearted series is about starting over, found family, and solving murders in a quirky old mining town with a secret supernatural community.

My Review

I received a free audio copy from Tantor Audio and voluntarily reviewed it.

I really like this series so far and was excited to dive into the third book in this series. Slaying at the Saloon was an enjoyable read. I liked following Olivia as she gets involved in another mystery and interacts with the other characters. I like how there is slowly more we learn about the side characters in each book. It’s such a fun series so far with plenty of mystery, paranormal and found family.

The mystery in this one was an interesting one. When a server working at the saloon gets killed before vampire Allie performs they are afraid a vampire slayer is in town. There’s also a murder that happened a year before that seems vampire related. The mystery had quite some good twists and turns. I was pretty convinced about a certain piece, but was totally wrong about that and in this case it was fun to be proven wrong. The reveals all made sense and I liked seeing it all play out.

I liked reading more about Olivia in this book. She’s spending some more time with Damien in this book. And there is more focus on the two vampires she’s friends with in this book, it was interesting learning more about them. The other familiar side character like Momma, the witches and other employees at the sanctuary also play a role. And there are some new side characters in this book as well. I enjoy seeing the world and characters come more alive and get expanded on in each book. the narrator for this book is awesome and enjoy listening to these.

To summarize: I really enjoyed this third book. It’s such a fun series and I enjoy reading about Olivia and all the characters she interacts with. The mystery in this one was a good one involving one recent and one older murder. There are some interesting twists and turns along the way. I liked seeing it all play out and how the motives and what happened made sense. It nice seeing the world and characters come even more alive with each book. I enjoy listening to this series as the narrator works well for this series and I like the way she does all the voices.
