Because reading is better than real life

My To-Be Read List is a meme hosted by Because Reading is Better Than Real Life where at the beginning of the month visitors can choose which book I’ll be reading this month. On the first saturday of a month the poll will be up, then on the second saturday of the month I’ll announce the book that won and later that month my review will follow.

This book was chosen through My To-Be Read list as the book I would read and review in September.

Blurb:
Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secretsโ€”and human lives.

In The Fiery Heart, Sydney risked everything to follow her gut, walking a dangerous line to keep her feelings hidden from the Alchemists.

Now in the aftermath of an event that ripped their world apart, Sydney and Adrian struggle to pick up the pieces and find their way back to each other. But first, they have to survive.

For Sydney, trapped and surrounded by adversaries, life becomes a daily struggle to hold on to her identity and the memories of those she loves. Meanwhile, Adrian clings to hope in the face of those who tell him Sydney is a lost cause, but the battle proves daunting as old demons and new temptations begin to seize hold of him. . . .

Their worst fears now a chilling reality, Sydney and Adrian face their darkest hour in this heart-pounding fifth installment in the New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series, where all bets are off.

My Review:
After how the last book ended I was really wondering what would happen in this book. This book was just as good as the rest of this series and I really enjoyed it. I’ve been reading a bit slow lately, but in comparison I read this book pretty fast.

This book starts with Sydney in re-eduction and Adrian trying to find her. A big part of the book centers around this plot, but while that might sound boring there was enough happening to keep my attention. There was always something new they found out, getting closer to some goal or idea, figuring out a new tidbit of info. The plot kept moving. Then there was a moment when i thought the book would end, but there were still a couple of chapters left. The last few chapters do a god job wrapping everything up that happened and introduce the plot for the next book. It’s not really a cliffhanger, but more like something happens that will be the focus of the next book, like how Mead ended several books in this series so far. I can’t say I was surprised by the ending, but I think it is something that needed to happen and I can’t wait to read the last book in this series!

Towards the end of the book there are some developments and I am curious to see how they will impact the next book and the Moroi society in general. While it might seem like this book doesn’t advance the plot too much, I still think it’s important for the series as a whole and set the stage for the next book.

This book made me realize again why I like Sydney as a character, she’s so resourceful and smart. Thinking of a plan to escape, but while it might endanger herself she still does her best to help the others as well. I didn’t like Adrian at the beginning of this book too much, he falls back into an old pattern and while I think it was realistic for him and made sense it still frustrated me and I was happy when he got out of it and started working towards helping Sydney. Sadly we don’t hear a lot about the people stuck in Palm Springs in this book as the focus is more on Sydney and Adrian and trying to free Sydney. There are some new characters introduced as well and we get a few cameo appearances from Rose and Lissa.

In terms of world building this book doesn’t offer much. We learn a bit more about the Alchemists and how they work and re-educating. As this is a later book in the series, it makes sense that there isn’t as much world building needed anymore as everything in the world has been explained already and already makes sense.

To conclude: I really enjoyed this book and I liked how it set the stage for the next book. I really liked Syndey in this book and even Adrian keeps growing on me. All in all this was an enjoyable book and I can’t wait for the next book!

    • I would certainly recommend this series! I really like Richelle Mead her writing style. I am already looking forward to next month’s poll and to see which one will win.

    • I just love Sydney, she might not fight like Rose, but I think I like her even more. She’s so smart and comes up with good ideas even in dire situations. She’s a great main character. How far did you get in this series?

    • I realy enjoyed the VA series, although you have to get used to Rose her personality. I think I like Sydney better as a main character. I would certainly recommend those series ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Even though it’s a vampire series, they don’t draw so much attention to that fact even less in Bloodlines. But then again I have nothing against vampires. In the last few Bloodlines books you can easily ignore they are vampires, I even wished they did a bit more with the vampire thing, they are more elemental magic users now. Only one more book lef tin this series, can’t wait to read it!

    • Yeah indeed once you get behind it suddenly seems like there are a lot of books already. I have enjoyed all Richelle Mead her books so far, although I haven’t started her Age of X series yet.
In my opinion both Vampire Academy and Bloodlines each have very consistent quality, you know what to expect of each book and each book is just a good and solid book.

  1. I’m glad you enjoyed it! I’m still diving into Rachael Mead’s world in VA but I’ve heard that this story line is better and more mature, so I plan to check it out as well. I like it when authors wrap a book up, give me a hint of the next book and don’t kill me with a cliffhanger, so I’m glad to hear she tends to do that! Great review!

    • Some call them cliffhangers, but in mead’s case I think it’s more a wrap-up followed by a hint of what the next book will be about. It’s really well done. I think I might enjoy the Bloodlines series more then VA, I really like Sydney as a main character!
