by Laura Greenwood

My Rating: 4 stars

Genre: Urban Fantasy/ Academy/ Paranormal Romance
Age Category: New Adult
Type of romance: m/f

Blurb:
Syxe has seen ghosts her entire life, but it’s only when she learns she’s a reaper that it all starts to make sense.

Most students at Scythe Grove Academy are worrying about their studies, not the cults they grew up in, but for Syxe, that’s her reality. With her past a mystery and her powers as a reaper completely undeveloped, there’s lots for Syxe still to learn.

If you like heroines who can talk to ghosts, university-age paranormal academy settings, slow-burn friends-to-lovers, and coming-of-age plots, then start the Scythe Grove Academy series today.

Scythe Grove Academy includes Shadow Seer, Shadow Prophet, and Shadow Oracle.

My Review

I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.

Shadow Seer
The Scythe Grove Academy is one of Laura Greenwood’s series that I hadn’t read yet and I jumped on the chance to read and review this series. Shadow Seer is the first book in this series and follows main character Syxe as she finds out she’s a reaper and starts attending Scythe Grove Academy.

I’ve enjoyed the series set in the Obscure World so far and I was excited to finally learn about the reapers and Scythe Grove Academy in this series. I liked reading about Syxe who has no idea she’s a reaper until she meets two reapers. I liked seeing her figure things out and learning more about her reaper powers. She also makes some good friends along the way. And she figures out more about the place she grew up in as an orphan.

There is plenty going on in this book and I liked reading it. The scenes were Syxe picks her house or grove as they are called was fun as well as the scene were she makes her scythe. I thought it felt realistic how she feels a bit uncertain and needs some time to settle and start trusting people. I liked the budding romance there is as well as her friendship with the Grove captain Juliette.

As Syxe is new to the world of reapers there is a lot that gets explained, which I liked as it made it easier to get a feel for the academy, why things worked that way and how reapers worked. I liked how she keeps asking questions, so she can understand everything. There is a plot line about the association that I hadn’t expected to go that direction and I am quite curious how this will all play out. I also liked there is a bit about helping ghosts and seeing the reaper powers in action.

To summarize: This was a solid start to this series. I liked reading about Syxe and following her along as she learned she’s a reaper and joins Scythe Grove Academy. There are some fun scenes with her learning about her reaper powers, choosing her house/ grove and making her own scythe. I liked seeing her make friends and a there’s some romance as well. As Syxe is new to this world there is a lot of explanation and answers which helped me get a feel for the world, the reaper powers and the academy. I enjoyed reading this one.

Shadow Prophet
I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.

Shadow Prophet is the second book in the Scythe Grove Academy series. I enjoyed this second book. It delves deeper into Syxe’s past and why she grew up at the Shadow Association, there’s more about the reaper academy and her powers as well as more about her romance with Matthias.

This was a solid continuation of the story and I liked learning more. There are some interesting twists and reveals about Syxe’s past that I enjoyed learning and we find out why she grew up at the Shadow Association. There was a new ghost case they have to deal with and I liked how that played out. I wasn’t a big fan of the relationship troubles when Syxe doesn’t respond well to something Matthias says and then ignores him for a while. Luckily they eventually talk things through and figure things out.

I liked how this book progressed a lot of the plots introduced in book 1 and I am curious to see how things get wrapped up in the third book. It also was fun to read more about the reaper academy and I enjoyed learning a bit more about the reapers and their powers and see a few of Syxe’s lessons there.

To summarize: This was a solid sequel. I enjoyed how this book continued the plot lines introduced in book 1, there’s more about Syxe’s past and the Shadow Association, the reaper academy and reapers as well as Syxe’s romance with Matthias. I liked seeing Syxe learn more about her past and how she got to be at the Shadow Association. I also enjoyed reading about the reaper academy, their powers and some of the classes. I didn’t really like the romance troubles when Syxe ignores Matthias after he said something before they talk it through, I liked seeing them talk things through eventually. I am looking forward to seeing how book 3 wraps things up.

Shadow Oracle
I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.

Shadow Oracle is the third and final book in the Scythe Grove Academy and I really enjoyed this one. The plot line surrounding the Shadow House comes to a conclusion and Syxe learns more about her past and herself. I also really enjoyed the epilogue and seeing where Syxe ends up after her studies.

This book really wrapped up everything well. Syxe is helping the Supernatural Retrieval Company build a case against the cult she grew up and things become more dangerous for her when she gets another invite from the Shadow House to visit and they threaten those she cares about. Syxe has a lot to deal with in this book and I liked seeing her develop more and figure out what she wanted to do. There’s also an interesting plot line about her career path and finding out what she wants to do after her studies, I really liked the resolution and seeing a glimpse of her future.

There is a bit more about ghosts and reaping as well in this book and I’ve been really liking reading about the reapers and their academy.

I like reading about Syxe and she has been such an interesting character. I like her romance with Mathias and this book really shows how supportive they are of eahc other. I liked how they are there for eahc other through happy and hard moments. And thee epilogue was awesome and showed a glimpse of their romance as well as how her friend Juliette and her partner are doing.

To summarize: This was a great book to wrap up the series. I liked seeing how the plot line surrounding the Shadow House got resolved and the role Syxe played in it all. I also liked seeing Syxe figure out what she wanted to do after her studies. I really liked reading about Syxe throughout this series and it’s been great seeing her find a place to belong and find out who she wants to be. I like seeing more of Syxe and Mathias together and how supportive they are of each other. This was a great conclusion to the series and I really enjoyed it.

Box set Summary
I really enjoyed this series. It follows Syxe, who has grown up in a cult, as she finds out she is a reaper to studying at the reaper academy and eventually figuring out her career path and dealing with the cult she grow up in. I really liked this series. Syxe is an interesting character and I liked seeing her deal with everything and developing throughout the series and finding her place and figuring out who she wants to be. I liked reading about her and her friends, the romance was sweet and well done too and I liked how supportive they are of each other. The reaper stuff was interesting and I liked reading about them and how it all works.

It was a great series this one. I haven’t read much about reapers, so that was interesting.

Oh I used to love Rachel Vincent’s books when I was younger, haven’t read any of her books in ages. Do you mean the Soul Screamer series? I really liked that series, but the last book kinda ruined it for me :(.
