by Kelly St Clare

My Rating: 4 stars

Genre: Fantasy
Age Category: Young Adult
Type of romance: M/F

Blurb:
Darkness crashes over the angry sea.

After the bloody skirmish on Pleo, my future is a jumbled mess. But I’m more concerned with the questions washing ashore: How can the pirates I’ve known my entire life be strangers now? How can they let past horrors rule them—after eighteen years? And how am I bound to this magical madness?

Chaos swirls, growing stronger every day, and I’m about to find out why.

Cosmo is determined to solve our problems the only way he knows how – landlubber style. The rest of my crew waver between duty and the urge to survive. But when I’m taken captive by the captain of Malice, I finally discover what’s lurking in the deep.

Pretence is washed away with the raging sea. Darkness takes root. Unwanted truth is as inevitable as the rising sun.

A battle is brewing around me…
And so is my reason to join the fight.

Weigh anchor and journey into a realm of royals with family issues, pirates with moral dilemmas, and magical creatures who drink too much. My Review

I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.

Pillars of Six is another great read in this series. It’s filled with pirates, magic and adventure. I did enjoy this one slightly less than the previous books, but I think that’s mostly because of my reading mood and the fact that there was a bit less magic and more being captured and escaping going on in this book. I really like the direction some plot lines took and this book is so important for Ebba-Viva’s journey and the direction it takes. I like what it means for the series as whole and the direction things are going.

Again Pillars of Six has some great twists and reveals, some I had excepted or were thinking in the right direction, but there were also some nice surprises. And this book is a sort of turning point in the series with the crew making an important decision on how to proceed and some motivations change big time, which was interesting to see. I also enjoyed seeing how the reveal from the end of book 2 impacted the events. And the cover so beautifully fits the story, both in feel and in how actual details and hints in the cover refer to the events in the book.

This book does have a slightly darker feel than the previous ones, which makes sense with the direction the story is going. We learn more about the taint and the pillars of six and how this will impact the realm as a whole and get a closer look at everything going. Ebba-Viva lands in some difficult situations and I enjoyed seeing what she got up to in this book. The danger really comes a lot closer in this book and it’s more clear how dangerous the six pillars really are.

Ebba-Viva is a great main character to read about and I liked seeing how she handled things in this book. She is slowly changing and finding her place in the world. And there are some great scenes where she really shows her personality. And I like how she retains her spunky attitude even with the changes she goes through. She has to figure out who and what she is and what she wants to fight for in this book and I liked seeing where she on the those topics is at the end of the book.

And her six fathers are awesome as always, this book reveals some important backstory of her fathers and things make a lot more sense. And I just felt so bad for what they had gone through, even knowing only a fraction of their story. It made me sick and sad about what they went through. Cosmo has it’s own struggles as well in this book and I liked seeing how he was handling things, but even when it feels like he is dealing, there’s another blow toward the end of the book and I am not sure how he will deal with that. I am still not sure about Jagger, I never fully warmed up to him, but I have the feeling we’ll be seeing more of him in the next book.

The magic and world building also gets more fleshed out in this book. I love how the world comes more alive in each book and how we learn more about the magic and magical creatures that inhabit this world. And I can’t wait to find out more. There’s more we learn about the taint, the six pillars and the magical items.

To summarize: this was a great book and I liked the direction the story took. This book feels very important for the series as a whole as there is a big change in direction the characters make. It feels like a very pivotal book in that sense. I did enjoy this one slightly less than the previous books, maybe because it’s a bit darker and there’s more capture and escape than in the previous book. It has a lot of adventure, danger and magic again like in the previous books. And I love seeing Ebba-Viva develop over the course of this series and finding her place. I also enjoyed seeing how Cosmo handled things and felt so bad for him at the end of the book. There is also important backstory information we learn about Ebba-Viva’s fathers and I felt so bad for what they had to go through. Things really fall in it’s place in this book and the danger grows much closer. I enjoy seeing the world become more fleshed out and am excited to see what happens next.

  1. Sounds like lots of important things happened in this book and it did a great job transitioning from the first part of the series to the new direction. I like hearing that the six fathers and Etta are being developed further just like the plot. I will get to this series eventually. Enjoyed your review, Lola!

    • It was a very important book for the series as a whole with the direction it took. You sum it up well with how this book was transitioning from the first part to a slightly new direction. Her six fathers are a blast to read about and this book was great in how it developed them even further. I hope you’ll enjoy this series when you get to it.

  2. A great review, Lola. I haven’t encountered this series, yet – but if I was to work on a ship, I’d want to be the helmsman. Power is steering the boat!

  3. Glad you’re still enjoying this series! I love when the cover matches the book so well, and Ebba-Viva does sound like a great MC! I also love that she has six fathers. She must be so protected lol.

To answer your question, I just wouldn’t work work aboard a ship lol. I hate boats. I get seasick.

    • The covers for this series are amazing and I love how well they fit each book and how elements on the cover refer to elements in the book. The six fathers thing is really fun and you really see how she has been well protected and she is also is quite direct thanks to her fathers upbringing.

Same here actually, all the times I’ve been on a boat I got seasick.
