JuneJune (Calendar Girl #6)
by Audrey Carlan

Rating: 3 stars

Blurb:
Politics, phallic statues, and pretty women.

Literally everywhere you look, you see an old man and a gold-digging cling-on wrapped around their wrinkly arms.

Luck had not gone my way when Warren Shipley, one of the nation’s wealthiest men hired me to play arm-candy in order to save face with the other one percenters he did business with. At least that’s what I thought when I arrived in Washington, DC, until I was met by old man Shipley’s debonair and insanely handsome son. Aaron Shipley was notably the youngest senator in the history of politics voted Senator of California at the tender age of thirty-five. Single, beyond rich, and the face of every political magazine around the US. Women everywhere wanted a taste of that power.

Me, I’d always thought politics were boring…boy was I wrong. Democracy had never been more exciting.

In the sixth book of the Calendar Girl serial, Mia is sent to our nation’s capital, Washington, DC. Still on her mission to save her father, she embraces the life of a gold-digging whore to allow her client to get close to other very powerful men.

Each installment in the Calendar Girl Serial will release every month throughout 2015. The stories will feature Mia’s journey as an escort to twelve clients in twelve different locations.

Warning: This book is designed for audiences 18+ due to language and graphic sexual content.

My Review:
June was another great installment in this series. This series is getting a bit formulaic with how in almost every book she meets a guy, has sex and then leaves at the end of the month. This book was a tad more original with how she was an escort for an older guy. And he did have a hot son, but things definitely take a turn I didn’t expect there.

Mia goes through some hard times in this book and I really felt for her with what happened. I also felt a bit uncomfortable with how a situation was handled. Yes I understood her reasons, but it still felt wrong somehow. Then there is the situation in Washington with the gold differs and people with a lot of money and while Mia didn’t fully fit in that scene she made the best of it and even managed to make some friends and there was a fun twist with a a side character she meets.

My favourite part of this book is how many of the characters from previous books we hear or see in some way or another. This gives the series a bit more of a continuity feel and there’s also something that Mia does in this book that focuses on the journey and cherishing the friends she has made so far. I really enjoyed seeing some of the previous books characters again and seeing how they treated Mia and where there for her. It was awesome And there’s a phone call with her best friend who tells her something she might not want to hear.

It was nice seeing Mia have a positive effect on her current client and being willing to tell him a few things bluntly so that he finally took charge and changed a few things. But the end of the book did put a bit of a damper on it all. There is less sex in this one as in the previous books, but I like how these scenes were handled.

To summarize: another great book in this series. Mia goes through some hardships in this book and I really felt for her and the way things were solved just didn’t sit fully well with me. On the other hand there were also some good things to cancel out the less good things. This book differed a bit form the standard formula of these books, which was a nice change. And we get to see/ hear from some characters from the previous books again, which was great to see how they acted around Mia and how close they were. I liked how Mia influenced her clients life for the better, but the end of the book put a bit of a damper on things.

3-star

How important is it to you that characters from previous books show up in later books in the same series?

    • I don’t mind graphic sexual content as long as the book also has a good story. Which is the case here and strangely enough I had expected the series to be more about the sex, but it’s about so much more as well.

  1. I completely agre with your review Lola! I think this book was my least favorite in the series – and as it moves forward, starting with July which you’re getting ready to read – the formulaic element pretty much disappears. I think just when it was in danger of becoming too formulaic things get really interesting 🙂

    • I am glad to hear that! I was a bit afraid it would get too formulaic, so I am glad to hear it won’t get to that point.
I am about one third into July already and I can see how this one already shakes things up from a bit. I am looking forward to read the rets of this series 🙂

  2. Well you’ve reached the half way point with these. I am enjoying them vicariously through your reviews. Interesting to put her in the political setting with all those powerful types. I do like that there is connection with former book characters so that all these tie together better. Hope it gets more engaging with the second half of the series for you.

    • I am glad to hear you’re enjoying my reviews of this series. It’s a fun series and you see Mia in a different situation each month. And it’s great how the series does get tied together with the side character who recur again and her development. I just started book 7 and so far I like the direction it’s taking. So I am excited to see how the second half of this series goes.
