Ghosts of the OperaGhosts of the Opera (Parisian Ghosts #4)
by Janna Ruth

My Rating: 4 stars

Genre: Urban Fantasy
Age Category: New Adult
Type of romance: m/f

Blurb:
Love, murder, and deceit at the opera—in Paris, even the ghosts have to play their parts.

Betrayed by my family, abandoned by my boyfriend, and on the ghost police’s black list—I’ve hit rock bottom. To escape GoPol, I have to pretend I’ve lost my ability to see ghosts, and worse, fake a romance with Sébastien, the last person I want to get cosy with.

Easier said than done. We can’t even enjoy a night at the opera without being thrust into spectral drama when the prima donna drops dead on stage. Was it an accident, a rival’s murderous vendetta, or has the phantom of the opera claimed another victim? With ghosts involved, Sébastien and I become reluctant detectives, racing against the clock to expose the killer before GoPol picks up my trail.

In this dance of deception, every step risks exposure. If GoPol discovers I still hang out with ghosts, my fate is sealed. Can Sébastien and I solve the murder and keep my secret buried, or will this masquerade be my final act?

Urban Fantasy with a French twist. If you like cave-crawling adventures, hopeless romantics, and ghosts, you’ll enjoy Ghosts of the Opera, the fourth book of the Parisian Ghosts series. Travel to Paris today for a haunting night at the opera.

My Review

I really enjoyed the first three books in the series and it didn’t take long before I decided to return for book 4. I had a great time reading this book, Alix is a great main character and I like reading about her. She has a lot to deal with GoPol doesn’t want her to be able to see ghosts and while she retains the ability due to Sébastien helping her, now she has to pretend she doesn’t see ghosts anymore. Her ghostly boyfriend Gasper has disappeared as has Sébastien’s whisper ghost Dix and they want to find them. Then there is a mysterious invite to the opera an a murder that happens on stage and Alix and Sébastien decide to investigate. Alix and her older sister aren’t on good terms after what happened in the previous book.

So there’s a lot going on, but the way it’s woven together works really well and it makes for an exciting read that kept my attention. I wanted to keep reading and the whole series is just so fun. This book had a slightly different vibe with Gasper not being there and I kinda missed him and his relationship with Alix. I hope to see more of him again in the next book. It was interesting seeing her grow closer to Sébastien and learning more about him. The setting of this one shifts to the opera, there are multiple references to the phantom of the opera according to the author note at the end, but those went right over my head as I never read that story. Despite that I never felt like I missed much and I could enjoy the story without getting those references.

I really like reading about Alix. I was a bit sad she has to hide her ghost whisper abilities in this one as it means less interacting with the ghosts, but there are still plenty of ghostly scenes. Sometimes she has to pretend to be on the phone or meet in private or safe spaces to talk with them and other times she only observes or listens, but there are still so many ghosts and they play a big part in the story. I enjoy how she sees them as really people and treats them as such.

The ending wraps the murder mystery plot line up well, although I still had a few questions remaining about how the murderer accomplished some things. And then there is this twist that makes me eager for the next book and looking forward to see how that all plays out.

To summarize: This continues to be a very enjoyable series. I like reading about Alix and how she sees ghosts as real people. She has plenty going on in this book. It was sad she had to hide her ghost whisper powers, but there are still plenty of ghosts in this book. This book shifts the setting to the opera instead of the catacombs. I didn’t get all the phantom of the opera references as I am not familiar with that story, but still had a great time reading this book. I missed reading about Gasper and his relationship with Alix, but it was interesting learning more about Sébastien. The way the book ends makes me eager for the next one.

    • The whole series is great so far. I never read or saw Phantom of the Opera, so I didn’t get all the references, but still enjoyed the book.

    • It sure is a great series so far and I think I read these 4 books in the span of two or three months, which is pretty fast as I usually space books out more. I hope to get to book 5 soon!
