Alpaca and Apparitions (Windflower #3)
by Andi R. Christopher
My Rating: 4 stars
Genre: Cozy Fantasy Romance
Age Category: Adult
Type of romance: f/f
Blurb:
Mildred Windflower – witch and successful fibre artist – has been touring the world, demonstrating her craft and taking up prized residencies. Now back in Aotearoa, she hopes an isolated farm cottage will give her time alone to work out what to do next.
She expected quiet. Instead she finds strange noises in the attic, and signs of an old mystery, while across the fence the quirky, gorgeous Anneke has returned to the family farm and is building up a herd of alpaca.
Something supernatural is going on: it’s up to Mildred to determine what is warning and what is threat. And ideally without making a total fool of herself in front of Anneke.
Alpaca and Apparitions is the third in the Windflower series that started with Succulents and Spells, but can be read as a stand-alone.
My Review
I was in the mood for more of this series, so I picked up this third book. And it was just the perfect fit for my reading mood while I was in the midst of a stressful time. This one might be my favorite in the series so far. It was so cozy! This book follows a different couple than the first two books. The main character here is Mildred, a family member of Laurel from the first two books. Mildred is a fiber artist and has been working overseas for a while and now she’s back in new Zealand and setting down in a cottage from her friend Will. Next door lives Anneke with her parents on a farm and she has a herd of alpacas. The two meet and grow closer and Mildred starts making the cottage more of her home and there is a ghost who haunts the cottage.
This was such a gentle cozy story and I liked seeing Mildred make the cottage into her home and place to belong and her adjusting to this new slower pace of life and seeing how it fit her. I also liked her romance with Anneke and the way the two grew closer. The fiber art was interesting to read about as well, I don’t know a lot about that. And the alpaca were so fun to read about! The ghost plot line slowly progressed throughout the story and I liked how it got resolved in toward the end, with a twist I hadn’t expected and was quite interesting.
There is some magic in this as well, same as the previous books in how it’s kinda subtle, but also clearly there. I liked seeing how Mildred’s magic was slightly different than the characters from the first two books. And there also is a fun scene where the couple from the first two books visit Mildred.
To summarize: This was a lovely cozy read. I really liked reading about Mildred and seeing her settle in the cottage and make it her own. The romance was sweet and I liked seeing Mildred and Anneke grow closer. The ghost plot line slowly kept progressing throughout the book and I liked how it got resolved, there was quite the interesting twist toward the end. I liked seeing how Mildred’s magic was slightly different than from the characters in the first two books, but also similar in how it was quite subtle. And it was fun to see the couple from the first two books visit Mildred. All in all this was a great cozy read and perfect for my current reading mood.
