Lola’s Kitchen is a feature on Lola’s Reviews where I talk about all things related to food, cooking and baking. These posts can be recipe posts, tens list posts about food or recipes or more discussion type posts about food. I love cooking and spend some time in the kitchen almost every day, so I wanted to give it a place on my blog as well. The banner for this feature is designed by Michelle from Limabean Designs.
These chocolate cookies are really good. The addition of cinnamon and cayenne gives them their unique flavor. If you want a good chocolate cookie with a hint of spice, you might like these.
This recipe is based upon The Beach House Kitchen’s Mexican Chocolate Sandwich Cookies with dulce the leche filling.
Ingredients
- Flour – 2 cups/ 250 gram
- Sugar – 1 cup/ 210 gram
- Butter – 113 gram
- Egg or flax egg – 2
- Cacao Powder – 1/2 cup/ 60 gram
- Cinnamon – 1 teaspoon
- Salt – a bit less than 1 teaspoon
- Cayenne Pepper – 3/4 teaspoon
- Baking Soda – 1 teaspoon
- Vanilla Extract – 1 teaspoon
They also are great with a bit of dulche de leche on top.
Method
- Pre-heat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit/ 180 degrees Celsius.
- Melt the butter for 20 seconds in the microwave, so it’s a bit softer. In a medium to large bowl combine the butter and sugar.
- Then add the eggs and vanilla extract and mix for a little bit.
- Now add the flour, cacao powder, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, salt and baking soda and mix until well combined.
- Make small balls form the dough and place on the baking sheet. Then bake for about 14-15 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and let cool down.
Oooh, I just love when chocolate is mixed with a hint of spice, especially a spicier pepper. I will definitely have to try these at some point!

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from these cookies at first, but the cinnamon and hint of cayenne pepper really adds something. It’s not too spicy, but you do notice it.
I saw someone make hot cocoa with pepper spices and didn’t think it sounded good, but it tasted fantastic. I would definitely try these chocolate cookies. Thanks for sharing about them, Lola!

I wans’t sure about how these would taste at first either, but it ended up working great. The cayenne just adds a little bit of spice that really works in these cookies.
I love cinnamon but I am not sure about the spicy however I wouldn’t be against trying it. π
Thanks for the recipe Lola! I am going to pin it for later!

It’s just a bit of spicyness and not too overwhelming, but it does really add something.
These sound delicious! You know I love cinnamon, and chocolate is good too, and I imagine the cayenne must give it an interesting extra bit of flavor! I also love dulce de leche, so that suggestions sounds great as well!

Yes exactly! The cayenne adds just that little hint of spice that really adds to the flavor and chocolate and cinnamon is always good!
Those cookies look very yummy!! I am not a fan of cinnamon and I can imagine Cayenne Pepper is an unusual combination in sweets (although popular), but I’d be tempted to try one. π

You could probably skip the cinnamon if you don’t like that. The cayenne adds just a hint of spicy that really adds something to these cookies.
Oh yum, these look so good. I don’t know if I’ve used cayenne pepper in much, but I’ve heard it’s good on popcorn too! π I really love peanut butter blossoms, in terms of cookies to make. Super easy but so so good.

I usually use cayenne pepper in curries, but it worked great in these cookies as well. I hand’t heard of it eating it on popcorn, might have to try that once. I made peanut butter cookies today, but I’ll have to look up what peanut butter blossoms are.
Oo that looks so good!! You’re making me hungry over here and I don’t really eat sweets anymore lol. When I do bake cookies though my favorite to make are peanut butter cookies. They are so easy to make and a favorite of mine and all 3 of my kids. π

I just baked peanut butter cookies today! They are so good!
How did you like these? I never would’ve thought to add cinnamon or cayenne to chocolate cookies, much less both of them.

They turned out great. The cinnamon, cayenne and chocolate made for a great combination. They taste like chocolate cookies with cinnamon and just a hint of spice.
