Blurb:
The world of professional ballet is built on illusion. The illusion of perfection. The illusion of effortless beauty. The illusion of eternal love.

But backstage, few members of the Union Ballet Company suffer from such illusions.

Anna Glaser has dreamed of nothing but dancing professionally her entire life. And when she’s finally offered a position with Union, she takes it, giving little more than a passing thought to what she might have to give up in exchange. But Sebastian Kaplan, the director who gave her the chance, won’t forget so easily.

When Anna meets Cain, who has been dubbed by the local media as Union’s most eligible bachelor, she realizes that making a deal with the devil might mean that Heaven — in the form of a gorgeous dark-haired man — is forever out of her reach.

Dancers at Union know that something that glitters and shines under the stage lights can still be vicious and evil when the lights go down.

Adagio is the first episode in the series The Company – an engaging drama-filled ride through the darker parts of the ballet and the lives of those who live to dance.

My Review:
I received a copy in exchange for an honest review

When I first read the blurb I was surprised to find out it was about ballet, now I don’t know a lot about ballet, but I found the topic intriguing and decided to participate in the blog tour for this book. I’ve never read a book about this topic before and I find that it was fun to have a topic like this trown in. It added something nice and original to the book and I enjoyed finding more about ballet and realizing how much it meant to the main characters.

Adagio is a fast paced story about two ballet dancers who fall in love and the politics and drama surrounding this ballet company. It was a fun and interesting book, although there where some scenes I liked less. I liked how at the end it wrapped up most of the plot lines nicely, while setting the stage for the next book as well. While it isn’t as long as the book I normally read and not so short as novella’s usually are I thought it was the right size for this book and am curious to find out what will happen in the next books.

One thing that bothered me a bit at the beginning was the third perspective, it took me a while to get used to it. And when I put it down and then picked it up again later I had the same issue, but when I was reading that quickly disappeared. This book is told from both Cain and Anna their point of views and I think it added something to the story to show both perspectives, especially as there are things they aren’t telling each other.

I liked the characters and how they where each dealing with their own problems. They had the ballet drama and politics, but beside that there where also sub-plots. Like Anna’s brother Jimmy and how she struggled to help him. Both Anna and Cain also had some events in their past which still bothered them and I thought they where interesting characters.

The romance was done well, although I didn’t really feel the heat between them for some reason. I liked how their relationship developed slowly and didn’t progress too fast. But the actual sex scenes didn’t really do much for me.

To conclude: Adagio is a nice start of this series, I liked the original topic and focus on ballet. The story is interesting, with lots of things going on and the characters had depth and where likeable. I also liked the romance, but didn’t really feel the heat.

    • The focus was more on the romance, but the ballet was really important to the story as well. I had some difficulties keeping up with all the ballet terminology in the beginning, but I got used to it pretty quick. It’s obvious the author knows where she’s writing about. I hope you’ll pick it up :).

  1. Hi, Lola! Great review! I posted my own review of Adagio (4*) and felt the same way as you: very original setting, well rendered scenes (especially the rehearsals and dancing) couldn’t really feel the connection between the MCs. I felt I needed more backstory to get them better. The writing was really good though.

    • Glad to hear you thought the same! Indeed the dancing and rehearsal scenes where done really well. It’s too bad you didn’t realy feel the connection between the MC. I thought the characters wher enice, but I didn’t really feel the romance either, although I did like the slow build-up. I’ll check out your review now 🙂

    • The author did make it work, but it always takes me some time to get used to it. I can’t dance either, but it was a fun and original topic/setting. Thanks for stopping by 🙂
