Hellbound Guilds & Other Misdirections (The Guild Codex: Warped #2)
by Annette Marie and Rob Jacobsen
My Rating: 4 stars
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Age Category: Adult
Type of romance: MF
Blurb:
Agent Kit Morris. Has a nice ring, doesn’t it? It’s a big step up from “wanted criminal” or “that weird con-artist guy with weirder psychic powers,” both of which recently applied to me. But my promotion to MagiPol agent comes with a few drawbacks.First, supremely talented and effortlessly gorgeous Agent Lienna Shen won’t agree to a dinner date with me. Second, my new assignment has pitted me against a guild with very bad taste in pets. Third, those pets are demons, and those demons want to kill me.
My psychic magic is great for conning people. It doesn’t do jack shit against hellish orcs. If I screw this up, my dinner date will be with a demon—and I’ll be the dinner. Even better, I kind of suspect this supposedly straightforward assignment is actually the tip of an unholy iceberg of power-hungry malefactors bent on destroying all law and order in the city.
I should probably mention that last part to my boss.
My Review
I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.
Hellbound Guilds & Other Misdirection arrived at the perfect moment. This was exactly the type of read I was in the mood for and I really enjoyed it. It was so fun to follow Kit in this second book. In this book Kits is now working for the magical police, the MDP. He teams up again with Lienna in this book as he helps her with an assignment that turns more complex the more they uncover.
I really enjoyed reading this one. It’s fast paced and action packed read with some funny scenes as well. I like Kit’s personality and how it shines through in the way he thinks and observes things, it’s a lot of fun to read. The plot line starts off as a simple assignment and then they uncover much more than they expected and land in some deep waters. There are multiple scenes in this book where I had no idea how the main characters would get out alive and was glued to the pages to figure out how they would manage.
Kit has this unique type of magic where he creates illusions in someone’s mind and it is such an unique power and interesting to see how he applies it. Then there is Lienna who has a whole bag full of magical artifacts. The two of them combined with someone who opposes them made for some exciting action scenes.
I like reading about Kit and his unique brand of humor. His tone really brightens the mood and there are some funny scenes as well. I like how Kit is working for the magical police now and felt this book was even better because of it and the fact he makes for such an unusual agent. I also like how he feels real and has his moments of self doubt as well. And how he does his best to support Lienna and cheer her up. The romance is definitely a slow burn and it’s clear the feelings are mutual, but something is holding Lienna back and I am curious to find out what it is.
To summarize: This was a great read! It was fast paced with plenty of action and scenes with cool magical powers. Kit and Lienna team up for what a daunting assignment and they uncover quite the secrets along the way. There is plenty of danger and situations where I wasn’t sure how they would make it out alive, whcih made for an engaging read. I like Kit as main character, his type of humor and unique perspective. He definitely doesn’t make for a typical agent. I like seeing him work together with Lienna and the hint of feelings growing between them. All in all this was a great read and I look forward to the next one.
Fun this one came right when you needed it most. I enjoy books that have a great characters with a sense of humor I relate to. Sounds like the plot and situation and exciting stuff, too. I still need to read the older series, but this new one with Kit as the character sounds great, too.

I love this series and this world. I usually wait for the audio so it will be a bit before I manage it. Wonderful review!
