My Review
I bought this one as it sounded interesting after seeing it in an another author’s newsletter. I eventually started reading it when I was in the mood for a scifi romance book. I enjoyed reading Cosmic Secret, but I never got as fully pulled in the story as I wanted. There were some things that didn’t quite work for me and while I enjoyed it and would probably read the sequel, it also was just missing something to fully win me over.
Cosmic Secret follows the point of view of Luna, she used to be someone else and she guards that secret. Then a handsome government agent boards while her ship is taking on refugees as well as a mysterious piece of cargo. This book had a lot going on and at times I felt like it was trying to fit in a bit too much at the same time and I would’ve rather it focused more on a few of the plot lines.
There is the romance, the situation with the refugees, the cargo they took on, Luna’s secret and her past catching up with her as well as an attack that happens later one. It just felt like a bit too much and not all of it ties together nicely. It felt like it was jumping from one problem to the next at times instead of being a cohesive whole. The whole plot line with the attack for example felt a bit off to me and I didn’t find it as interesting and it just felt like just another thing for them to deal with and a way to add more tension and danger. I just felt like this could be interesting if it had gotten more focus or not be there at all to leave more space for the other plot lines.
Luna was an interesting main character and I liked how she build her life aboard this ship and is helping others. She’s quite passionate about her cause. She’s also a bit impulsive which led to some interesting situations. I liked the crew she has around her and the found family vibes. There were a few moments or scenes I didn’t really like how she handled things and some things that bothered me, but then in other scenes I liked how she acted. I liked the plot line regarding her past and what happened as well as why her father is still searching for her.
Then there was the romance, it felt like it was going to be a slow burn at first, but then it suddenly heats up. I didn’t really feel the romance, their mutual attraction was clear and how they are similar type of people, but I just didn’t really feel their connection above the physical. There were these little things and scenes that just didn’t work for me and I didn’t get as invested in their romance as I had hoped. And while I understood why she kept some things a secret it also felt like that was what kept space between them.
I wasn’t sure whether this series would have a different romance in each book or follow the same couple throughout the series. With the way this book ends I am pretty sure the next books will follow the same couple. A lot of the plot lines get resolved by the end which makes the ending feel like a satisfying resolution, but there is enough left open to make me curious about what happens next.
To summarize: I enjoyed Cosmic Secret, but some things about it just didn’t fully work for me. I liked the plot and wanted to know what would happen next, but there were too many things going on and it felt like too much at times. There were a few plot lines that didn’t feel as integrated with the rest of the story and weren’t as interesting. Luna was an interesting character, but I went back and forth at times about whether I liked how she acted or not depending on the scene. The romance felt like it would be a good slow burn, but then then things heat up quite suddenly. I didn’t fully feel the romance and wanted more besides their obvious physical connection. The side characters give it a bit of a found family vibe with the close knit crew aboard the ship and I am curious about what happens next. The ending wraps up most of the plot and feels like a satisfying resolution to the book while leaving enough open for the sequel.
