For today’s post I wanted to share some of my 2024 reading statistics. I always track a lot of things for the books I read and I enjoyed looking at some of the statistics.

Reading Statistics for 2024

Some Interesting Stats

  • Total Books Read: 193
  • Author I read the most books from: Laura Greenwood, I read 20 of her books this year.
  • Book I read most often: Doll Girl Meets Dead Guy by Lidiya Foxglove, I re-read it twice last year.
  • Physical Book read: only 1, A Different Sort of Normal by Abigail Balfe.
  • Oldest published book I read: an old review copy I finally got to Okheania by Éric Corbeyran and Alice Picard published in 2008. And the audio book for Murder Past Due by Miranda James which first got published in 2010.
  • Most books I DNF’d in a month: October, I DNF’d 5 books that month. This was a stressful month so this didn’t surprise me as I struggled to find what I wanted to read.
  • Subgenre I read the most books of: Cozy Mystery with 13%, but close are Paranormal Romance (10.9%), Urban Fantasy (10.9%), Contemporary Romance (9.8%), Science Fiction Romance (9.8%) and Paranormal Cozy Mystery (8.8%)

Which genres did I read?

Main genre

Let’s start with which genres I read. I always list the main genre and only have like 6 of those, contemporary, historical, mystery, fantasy, scifi and nonfiction. I am not too surprised by these and knew I mostly read fantasy. Less science fiction this year which I was aware of, but mystery and contemporary are a big slice as well. I am mostly impressed with how many nonfiction books I read this year as that was one of my goals.

Which ratings did I give?

Star rating

I wasn’t surprised to see that huge slice of 4 star ratings, but that DNF slice was good to see. I used to be so bad at DNF’ing books and this year I DNF’d 14,5% of the books I read, so I think that’s pretty good. As a result I think I had less 2 and 3 stars, which only makes that 4 star slice even larger. Nice to see that 5 star slice be 7.3%, that’s pretty nice to see.

Which book formats did I read?

Book format

Nice to see how big of a slice audiobooks are now, I’ve come a long way from how a few years ago I didn’t even listen to audio. And that physical slice is the one physical book I read this year.

What was the source of the books I read?

Source

Another graph that makes me happy. I used to read a bigger percentage of review copies and my goal was then to get it closer to 50/50. Seems I got pretty close to that this year. And I even got some free books read.

How much romance

How much romance graph

I always take note how much romance there was, main focus, side plot, hint only or no romance. A lot of books I read have romance, but it was interesting to see the larger slices for hint only and no romance this year. Those nonfiction books I read are the not applicable slice.

In which countries did my books take place?

country graph

No surprise to see the USA be the biggest slice. UK, Space and Fantasy world have a big slice as well and even Japan had a noticeable slice (thanks to the Red Winter series I read this year mostly). Not applicable are the nonfiction books.

In which year were the books released?

release year

Again I wasn’t surprised I mostly read new releases in 2024, but quite a few 2023 and 2022 books and I am mostly surprised at the large variety of the other release years that still have a book or two. 2011 and 2018 have a larger amount than most.

Which age were the main characters?

age category

I categorize my books according to age category which I count as the age of the main characters. Mostly adult main character this year, which I expected. Was good to see I got some Middle Grade books read this year and that 7.8% slice of not applicable are the nonfiction books showing up again.

Who published the books I read?

Publisher graph

Was nice to see how many self published books I read this year, 57%! With how many audio review copies from Tantor I got this year it made sense to see Tantor Audio have such a big slice. The rest just seems to be a few books by various publisher, but not many of them having a really significant slice.

How many books did I read each month?

amount of books read vs. month

I thought this one was interesting, it really shows how consistent the amount of books I read each month is. Only a few months that deviate much, like October. I looked it up and I had 5 DNF’s that month which probably influenced that number a lot.

Which statistic was most interesting to see? Any interesting stats from your 2024 reading year?

  1. I read your post on your reading stats in 2024 with fascination. You’ve certainly drilled into the numbers! I’m impressed at how many indie books you read – I was shaken at how few I read last year and it’s one of the numbers I’m working on improving in the coming year. Like you, I largely read digitally and listen to audiobooks – I find my older eyes don’t enjoy reading print all that much. It’s also so much more convenient. I’m interested in your breakdown of how many books a month you read – I have the numbers available, but haven’t ever considered turning it into a graph. Thank you for sharing, Lola:)).

    • Thanks for reading it all. I like tracking all the various information for the books I read and that makes it easier to create the graphs afterwards. I was also quite impressed with how many indie books I read, I knew I read a lot, but actually seeing that graph was fun. I find ebooks and audio way more convenient as well and my eyes also like the larger fonts I can set on my ebook. I never did the books per month graph either, that was a new one I tracked this year and thought it was interesting to see how consistent the numbers were across months.

    • It helps that I am on her arc team and she writes a lot of books and they are usually not as long, so that was a lot of Laura Greenwood books this year.

  2. I love how you graphed out your stats and saw much that was expected, but still a few fun surprises. Looks like you have some balanced numbers around your reading goals of 50/50, 4 star average being top is really good and a consistent amount each month. Looking at the stats is what I enjoying doing often on The Storygraph sight I joined a couple years ago.

    • Oh I forgot all about Storygrpah even though I joined a few years ago. It was fun to make all these graphs and look at my reading stats, even though most weren’t big surprises. I think 50/50 when it comes to review copies is a nice balance. I was surprised at how consistent my reading numbers were across months, I hadn’t tracked that stat before.

    • That’s pretty neat StoryGrpah makes a lot of graphs nowadays. I made an account, but kinda forgot about it. I much prefer ebooks and rarely still read physical copies, the one I read was a nonfiction book with lots of illustrations and I was glad I got that one in physical format.

  3. I used to do stats posts, it’s always interesting to see! I think my ratings spread would prob look similar. I mostly give 4 stars. I find that nowadays I enjoy most of the books I read, even if they’re not amazing. And I still give some 3 stars and 5 stars, but rarely 2 or 1. You have more DNFs than me, but that’s great you’re figuring out what works for you! I love that you read so many self pub books. I feel like I read fewer of those nowadays because I get most books from the library, and they tend to get more mainstream books, but I miss reading more self pub.

    • It was so fun to look at all my reading stats. I think it’s nice that 4 stars were my majority rating, it’s good to enjoy most books you read. Like you I rarely give 2 or 1 stars and usually DNF books that I don’t enjoy. I was quite surprised by all the DNF’s I had last year, but I am glad I got better at DNF’ing. That makes sense that the books you get from the library are more likely to be mainstream books, they probably don’t have as much self pub books there.
