by Claudie Arseneault

My Rating: 4 stars

Genre: Cozy Fantasy
Age Category: Adult
Type of romance: no romance

Blurb:
Fate and friendship brought Horace, Rumi, Keza, and Aliyah together in Rumi’s sentient self-propelling wagon. They seek the forest haunting Aliyah’s dream, hoping for answers about the elf’s past and unique abilities—but first, they need to traverse a world haunted by Fragments, dangerous shards that can possess travellers and react to Aliyah’s presence.

They finally leave the coast to undertake a long ocean crossing filled with the sailors’ brand-new games and fearsome myths, but no one expects the latter to come to life. At sea, the Fragments that roam the world have coalesced into a gigantic beast—the kraken of legends—and unfortunately, it shares its landbound cousins’ obsession with Aliyah. The crew may have bested countless storms, but no amount of sea-worthiness can save the ship from the wrath of its colossal tentacles.

If they want to escape the kraken and continue their journey, the wagon’s team will need to unravel more of the Fragments’ mysteries, and learn to listen beyond the murmur of the sea.

Stories from the Deep is the fourth novella in The Chronicles of Nerezia, a queer fantasy series of found family road trips with aroace nonbinary leads.

My Review

I wanted something cozy and familiar, so I picked this one up. This is the fourth book in this adventure filled cozy fantasy series following a group of found family characters as they travel the world in search of a mysterious grove from Aliyah’s dreams. To do so they must cross an ocean and that’s what this story deals with, their journey to another continent and the kraken they encounter along the way.

I really enjoyed this one. It was so fun to be back in this world and follow Horace and his friends. They have to cross the ocean in this one and deal with being stuck on a ship and then a kraken shows up. This one had plenty of danger and I was curious to see how they would deal with it. There are some interesting reveals, some unexpected struggles and an ending that leaves me eager for more. And there are some things that come to light about the fragments which was really interesting and I can’t wait to learn more.

These characters are so fun to read about. I love the found family vibes and I really like reading about Horace, Rumi, Aliyah and Keza. There is plenty about each of them and lots of fun moments were they are there for eahc, play games or joke with each other. I really like this group of characters and seeing them interact with each other is great.

To summarize: This was another great read in this series. I enjoyed following their journey and seeing how they deal with crossing the ocean and the kraken they encounter. There are some interesting developments, unexpected struggles and the ending makes me look forward to the next book. I like the adventure filled vibes of this series. The world is interesting to read about. And I really like the found family aspect and the reading about these characters, seeing them be there for each other and interacting with each other is great. I look forward to the next one.
