My Rating: 4 stars

Genre: Alternate History Urban Fantasy/ Mythology/ Paranormal Romance
Age Category: New Adult
Type of romance: m/f

Blurb:
Rera is about to discover she’s a walking contradiction – a thief who works for the goddess of justice.

While on the run, Rera accidentally stumbles into a sacred ceremony and the unthinkable happens – Ma’at chooses her to be one of her priestesses.

After having only gotten by thanks to thieving, moving into the temple is a shock for Rera, especially when she’s paired with another trainee priestess who makes it clear she wants nothing to do with her.

But there are plots stirring in London, and Rera’s old life is about to come crashing into her new one.

No Justice For Thieves is book one in Scales Of Justice, an urban fantasy series based on Egyptian mythology and set in the same world as The Apprentice Of Anubis.

If you love Egyptian mythology, alternative versions of the modern day, temple politics, slow-burn workplace romance, and a world where the gods are real, then the Scales Of Justice series is for you!

My Review

No Justice for Thieves is the first book in this new series set in Laura Greenwood’s Egyptian Empire World. I was too squeamish to continue with the Anubis series, but I liked the idea for the world and as this one features a different main character and temple I knew I wanted to give it a try. I read the prequel first as well as two of the companion stories before diving into this new series. I am especially glad I read those two companion stories first as it helped already having a feel for the world and about how priestesses of Ma’at worked.

This book is told from Rera’s point of view. Rera is a thief and one day she accidentally ends up during the blessing ceremony and gets blessed by Ma’at. Now she’s an apprentice for the priestess of justice and can tell when people are lying. Her new boss has a task for her and Rera goes back to her life of crime to be undercover. I liked this twist of a thief turned justice apprentice and it made sense given how Rera always struggled with the stealing, but didn’t have a choice.

I liked seeing this story play out and especially seeing how Rera adjusted to her new reality was very interesting. I could relate to her getting overwhelmed and thought the earplugs she got from Ben were a nice touch as I use ones like those myself as well. It was interesting seeing how her new gift to tell truth and lies worked and seeing how this changed what she knew of the people around her. I liked the set up for the romance with Ben, whose an apprentice for the god of chaos Seth. There are some sweet moments between them and Rera can talk freely with Ben about everything that’s going on.

The world in this series is very interesting and I look forward to learning more of it. It’s very interesting with the Egyptian gods and temples and how this society developed different due to the Egyptian Empire not falling.

I am glad I read two companion stories first before this one. Scales of Honesty is about Ma’at’s temple and those who are Blessed as well and gave me more knowledge about how this all worked with the truth and justice Blessed. While Legacy of Wings has Ben as a side character and gave me more knowledge about his family and how he got Blessed.

To summarize: I enjoyed this book. I read two companion stories before this one Scales of Honest and Legacy Wings which helped as I already knew a bit more about the world, the temple of Ma’at and how Ben got Blessed. This story follows Rera, a thief who gets Blessed by the goddess of justice and now has to go undercover to serve her goddess. I liked seeing how Rera adapted to her new reality and how she handled everything. I liked the setup for the romance with Ben and there are some sweet moments with them. I look forward to more books in this series!

    • I am glad the author decided to write more series in this universe as this world is so interesting, but the mummification stuff in the other series I couldn’t stomach.
