Midnight & Mince Pies is a prequel to the Falhaven Castle series, a cozy fantasy with a baking dragon, a princess who wants to be in the kitchen over the throne room, and the baker who wants to be there with her. There is a slow burn friends to lovers romance, with a pinch of steam in later books, and an ace heroine.
My Review
Laura Greenwood always writes a Christmas or winter holiday themed story each year and I was excited to see that this year it was for the Falhaven Castle series, which I am really enjoying so far. Midnight & Mince Pies follows princess Evie during the Yuletide celebrations, she struggles with all the public celebrations and the big Yuletide ball she has to attend, so she takes a break to visit the kitchens during the day to spend time with her friend Nate.
I enjoyed reading more about Evie and especially seeing her bake with her friend Nate. I liked reading about the fruit marzipan they made, which is a common holiday treat here in the Netherlands. As well as the Mince Pies that are mentioned in the title. I really like how Nate understands Evie and the way they interact. I also liked their gift exchange scene, whcih was so sweet with how they both got the other such a good present.
Evie is neurodivergent and she always feels so relatable. I felt bad for her struggles having to attend the Yuletide festivities and happy when she could escape to bake. I enjoy reading about her and was very happy to have this extra story about her.
To summarize: This is a fun and sweet Yuletide themed cozy fantasy story. I like reading about Evie, she’s relatable and I feel for her with her struggles attending the festivities and was happy when she could take a break to bake. The baking scenes with her friend Nate are so fun and I really enjoy reading about the two of them. There are some sweet scenes and some yummy food. I really like this series so far and look forward to more books.
