Genre: Urban Fantasy

Type of romance: m/f/m

Blurb:
Some ghosts want peace. Others want to conquer the world.

Napoleon’s bones are missing—and the hunt for the Chevalier d’Os is on. Sébastien is leading the search through the catacombs, but even as his agents disappear one by one, he won’t let me help. Not because he doesn’t trust me—but because he’s terrified the Chevalier will get his hands on me again.

Fine. If I can’t fight in the shadows, I’ll step into the light.

The world knows about ghosts now, and I’ve become the public face of the afterlife. From my platform at the Panthéon, I’m rallying support for the spirits still suffering—starting with the haunted bones beneath Paris. They deserve peace. But how do I make the living care?

Meanwhile, something ancient is stirring in the catacombs. The Chevalier has a plan, and I still have a prophecy hanging over me. If I’m not careful, I won’t just witness history repeating itself—I’ll be the one who repeats it.

Urban Fantasy with a French twist. If you like cave-crawling suspense, hopeless romantics, and ghosts, you’ll enjoy Ghosts of the Empire, the 8th book of the Parisian Ghosts series. Travel to Paris today—where history is being rewritten.

My Review

I really love this series and this eight book was another great read. This book is in a lot of ways the set-up for the final book, but despite that it still has a lot going on. Alix is such a great main character and she has a lot to deal with. Napoleon’s bones have been stolen and they know the Chevalier is planning something with them. GoPol is searching for the Chevalier’s location, but Sébastien won’t let Alix help as he knows how much the Chevalier wants to get his hands on her. Then there are plenty of other plot lines going on with the world changing and more ghosts for Alix to help.

I really like how in these past 2 books we’ve been seeing the world change, ghosts are now public knowledge, although not everyone believes they’re really real yet. There are some fun scenes and fascinating ideas of what this could mean for the future and the way ghosts and the living can work together. I really like seeing all these possibilities and the way Alix is part of it, sharing the ghosts their stories on her platform. And then there is a mother looking for the ghosts of her son that Alix helps with, which also was interesting to see that play out.

Things really ramp up towards the end, there are some interesting reveals and twists. As well as a twist that didn’t surprise me as I was wondering if that would happen, I just had expected it earlier. The ending of this one is definitely a cliffhanger, but luckily the next book released today as I am writing this so I can read that one as soon as I want.

I really like reading about Alix, she’s such a likable main character and I like how much she cares about the ghosts. She continues her missions to help the ghosts in this one. Alix, Sébastien and Gasper are now a throuple and it was so fun to see them all together. There is a bit of conflict there later on as well, but throughout the whole book it’s clear how much they all care about each other. There are some great recurring side characters and I enjoyed seeing Alix interact with them, as well as some new side characters that get introduced as well. And another ghost that Alix helps out, which was heartwarming to see even tough there are some heartbreaking things that come to light while she helps the ghost. I also liked seeing Alix start her own social media platform and share her story in her own way.

To summarize: This was another great installment in this series. It’s such a fantastic series and this book works a bit as a set-up for the final book, but still has plenty going on. The main plot focuses on finding the Chevalier, but Alix has to stay on the sidelines as he wants her for his plans. There are plenty of other things going, with Alix sharing her own story and the ghosts their stories on social media, helping some new ghosts and she’s now dating both Sébastien and Gasper. I really liked seeing Alix interact with all the side characters and there are some fun new side characters too. The romance is lovely and I like seeing how much these three care about eahc other. I enjoyed seeing the world change and all the possibilities now the existence of ghosts are pubic knowledge. The ending ramps things up with plenty of danger and action and end with a cliffhanger. I hope to read the next book soon. I can’t commend this series enough for fans of the urban fantasy genre.
