Lola’s Kitchen is a feature on Lola’s Reviews where I talk about all things related to food, cooking and baking. These posts can be recipe posts or more discussion type posts about food. I love cooking and spend some time in the kitchen almost every day, so I wanted to give it a place on my blog as well. The banner for this feature is designed by Michelle from Limabean Design.

While there are lot of things I do eat and enjoy, I am also a picky eater and there are a lot of things I don’t like and stay far away from. As I normally talk about food I like, I thought it would be interesting to talk about food I don’t like for a chance. I am sure there are more things then the ten I listed here, but these were the first to come to mind.

Ten Foods I don’t like

  • HoneyHoney. While I love sweet things, honey is a big no for me. The taste is horrible and I don’t like dishes or sweets with a lot of honey. I have made a few dishes were honey was only a small ingredient and you don’t really taste it, then I am okay with it. But tea with honey or deserts with honey, uhm no.
  • Brussels Sprouts.Ugh the taste of these things is horrible. Here in the Netherlands it’s sort of common for people to not like them, so my sister and I always thought we didn’t like them. When we tried them once my sister loved them, but I really didn’t like them. So after that moment at least I could say for sure I didn’t like these. It doesn’t matter in what kind of dish they are, I just don’t like them.
  • Chili Peppers. I don’t deal well with spicey food, it’s not that I have anything against it, but my mouth just burns away. So I am not a fan of chili pepers. I might throw in some cayenne pepper or sambal badjak in my dishes now and then, but only a tiny bit. Large amounts of this stuff in my dish simple make it unedible for me. I have eaten a few dishes mostly made by other people that I couldn’t eat because it was too hot.
  • Chicory Vegetable. Hope I translated that right. I never liked this and my mom always cooked something different for me when she and my sister ate this. Blegh.
  • Chick Peas. When in a dish I can sometimes be okay with these, but most often I try to eat as little as possible. Just not for me, again a combination of gross texture and taste that makes this a no go for me.
  • Kiwi Fruit. Ever since I was a kid I didn’t like kiwi fruit. My sister loves the and when we were younger she always said they brought good luck so I would ate one piece. I always quickly ate something after it as I just don’t like the taste at all and then there’s that horrible texture which makes my mouth feel all weird. Nope sorry no kiwi for me.
  • Olives. Another one of those things that my boyfriend likes, but I don’t. They taste so strong and gross, I have tried them a few times and I just can’t get used to the taste.
  • ChampignonsChampignons. This one makes my life difficult sometimes as it seems everyone assumes that if you’re a vegetarian you must eat mushrooms, not sure why. And lots of vegetarian dishes or vega burgers contains champignons. And I just don’t like champignons, the worst thing is the texture, I just can’t stand it. The taste is kinda okay, but not great. So yeah I avoid champignons at all costs, sometimes I throw them in a dish after I took my own portion out or I made two versions as my boyfriend likes champignons/
  • Advocado. I can’t stand the taste and the structure. I never really ate this until in a semi fancy restaurant during a vacation with my boyfriend. We both had never ate it and then we got a salad with advocade and we gave it a try and we both couldn’t eat more than one piece. I felt a bit bad to eat everything from the salad, except for the advocade, but ugh it was gross. I don’t think I ever ate advocado after that. I did once buy avocado afterwards as our rats seem to love it.
  • Salmon. While I am not a fish person by any stretch of the word, salmon tops the list of fish I avoid. I just can’t stand the taste, I think salmon is gross.

Which foods do you dislike?

  1. OH MY GOSH YES. Someone, finally, who doesn’t like kiwi-fruit. I despise it. I think it tastes all right when I’m actually eating it, but I cannot stand the feeling/taste it leaves in my mouth afterward. I’d just rather not have it at all. And the same with Salmon–or anything fishy, really.
Kara @ Diary of a Teen Writer recently posted…Friday Photography (13)My Profile

    • Yay I am happy to have found another person who doesn’t like kiwi fruit. Ugh the taste/ feeling in your mouth afterwards is the worst! I am not a fish lover at all, but I will eat white fish now and then, but I can’t stand the taste of salmon. Although I don’t like most other fish either.

  2. I’m a very easy eater so I barely have anything I truly dislike. One of the foods I absolutely cannot stand is cheese. I hate the smell, I hate the texture, and even the tiniest bit in or on my food makes me want to throw up. Lucky for me (sort of), I’m lactose intolerant, so I no longer have to explain to people that I don’t like cheese. I’m not a huge fan of honey either, especially not in tea.
Celine recently posted…Review: Gone Girl by Gillian FlynnMy Profile

    • Oh that must be though being a dutchie and not like cheese, it’s like everyone is expected to love cheese in this country. I like cheese, but only the mild cheese (jonge kaas), I can’t stand most other cheese like old cheese or “belegen”. The taste is too strong for me. Saying you’re lactose intolerant certainly sounds like an easier explanation than not liking cheese.
I only like honey when i can’t taste it, so I guess that means I don’t like it all.

    • I am a picky eater as well, it just seems there are so many things I don’t like. But I did broaden my tastes since I was little, then I disliked even more. I only like some white fishes, bt hardly ever ate fish. When I still ate meat I only ate a few bites of most things as I didn’t like them, the only meat I remembered like I liked were saucage breads and hamburgers, lol. Another reason why I became a vegetarian was that I simply didn’t like meat.
Sometimes my boyfriend convinces me to try mushrooms, but I just don’t like them.

  3. I love Brussel sprouts, chick peas (hummus !!!), kiwis, mushrooms, advocados – I used to hate olives but now I like the green ones. I’m trying to think of something I hate to eat… *scratches head*… Well, I’m vegan, but it’s a matter of opinion, not of taste. Apart from that, nothing comes to mind just now ๐Ÿ˜‰ Oh, I know ! Those half cooked chocolate cakes that are creamy inside ? You try to eat them and the cream crawls on your plate like the blob in that old sci-fi movie !
Red Iza recently posted…Hottie of the weekMy Profile

    • I also don’t like hummus, but I do buy it for my boyfriend who likes it. I guess olives are an acquired taste, but I just can’t seem to get used to it. Lol, that description of chocolates cake make them sound really gross, I don’t think I ever have eaten those.

  4. Oh yeah, there are foods that I absolutely dislike, too! I’m also not a fan of Kiwi. Actually I don’t like a lot of fruit because their textures are weird. I like apples and oranges and clementines. Sometimes I’ll eat a slice or two of banana but not often. I like grapes. But otherwise no thank you!

I do love honey, though. I put honey in my green tea every day and it is so good (for me anyway!). I also dislike onions, mushrooms, and OLIVES!
Quinn @ Quinn’s Book Nook recently posted…My Favorite Historical Romance NovelsMy Profile

    • Yeah I seem to have that issue with some fruits as well, it’s hard to enjoy something when the texture is unpleasant like with Kiwi. I also like apples and oranges and banana as well. I love sweet thigns, but I just don’t like the taste of honey. I do like onions and add them in almost every dish I made.
Lola recently posted…Lola’s Kitchen: Ten Foods I don’t likeMy Profile

  5. I can’t eat mushrooms or avocado since I get a belly ache from them. I do love honey but only a certain brand some are very strong. I love brussels sprouts ๐Ÿ™‚ and I love chick peas lol I usually make a bean salad with chick peas that I can eat the entire thing.

I don’t eat fish, I don’t mind crabs or shrimp but salmon, flounder or any type of fish I just can’t eat it. Kiwi is ok, it’s a little bitter and makes my throat itch, my mom can’t eat them at all her throat closes on her if she does. It’s like pineapple for me if I even eat a little bit I feel like I am going to die. Don’t even get me started on Mango, just typing the word makes me want to throw up.

I also don’t eat liver, lamb, veal or any other wild animal. I stick to the basic cow, pig and chicken and I love Pizza ๐Ÿ˜‰
    Michelle@Because Reading recently posted…#Review ~ Secrets & Surrender: Part I by L.G. CastilloMy Profile

    • Even the not strong honey brands taste bad to me. I have tastes a few different types of hoeny, but I didn’t like any of them. I have tried shrimp a few tiems and it’s not too bad, they just look creepy and that’s why I usually don’t eat them. I like mango! I don’t buy it too often, but I do like it. My boyfriend does eat meat, but mostly chicken and minced meat only. I also love pizza, in fact we ate pizza this evening as a pizza store close to us had a nice discount as they opened a new store.

  6. Lololol. I love this list. I’m not sure what Chicory vegetable is. Can you post a photo? I love brussels sprouts, mushrooms, salmon, and olives, so I will eat those when you don’t want them ๐Ÿ˜‰ More for me! I actually love avocado, but can’t eat it because it gives me such awful heartburn I want to cry. I miss it. Fish is main meat, as I don’t eat any other meat like beef, pork, or chicken. My husband likes kiwi so I buy it for him but I don’t eat much of it.

    • I guess it might be the wrong translation, thanks google translate. Here’s the dutch wikipedia page: http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witlof which has a picture. Yes you can eat all those gross foods for me instead. The structure of avocado is horrible, I hate slicing it, but will do so for our rats once in a while as they love it. Can’t you eat anything afetrwards to reduce the heartburn? That’s sad you can’t eat it while you love it.

    • I don’t like anchovies either, I think I only ate it once, but ugh the taste was horrible and so strongly. I don’t really midn ektchup, but I don’t eat it often either. Maybe I’ll get used to honey eventually as well, but for now I avoid it.

  7. Hmm, I don’t know if I could come up with ten things out of the foods I’ve actually tried, but here’s what I’ve got and most of it is food that I like under certain circumstances. Fair warning, I’m not a vegetarian so forgive me if my list grosses you out. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Alright so I needed to put in a few that haven’t been tried and won’t be just because. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. Coconut flakes (I like coconut, but the texture of the flakes squicks me out)
    2. Liver (uh-uh, major fail!)
    3. Meat on the bone (I have a fetish about that, I admit. I like meat that’s already been removed from the bone)
    4. Caviar, escargot, chitlins and frog legs (will never happen)
    5. Coffee and tea (I know these are beverages, but I don’t like them and they have been used as flavoring in food dishes)

    So far, that’s the list.
Sophia Rose recently posted…Warlord by Lana Grayson #ReviewMy Profile

    • I remember that my boyfriend’s dad sometiems made lviers for himself, ugh they smell horrible. I never tried those when I still ate meat and even if I did I wouldn’t try them, it looks, sounds and smells gross. I think I ate chicken on the bone a few times when I still at meat and didn’t find it too bad, but I prefered it already removed from the bone. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten any of those you listed on #4 and never would either, only the thought of eatign that freaks em out already. I don’t like cofee either, but I love tea, I can’t imagien my life without it.

    • That’s why I made myself limited to ten foods, as if I was going to list everything this post would get way too long. I am a picky eater. I don’t like hummus either, although I guess it’s less bad then the chickpeas themselves as the structure it better.
I don’t mind beets, but I don’t eat them often either. I don’t think I ever tried lima beans.

  8. *gasp* Salmon, Brussels sprouts, chili peppers, avocado, and kiwis are some of my absolute faaaavorites! I also like chick peas in India dishes, and sometimes I like black olives. I’ve never had chicory, but turtles are suppose to like it. We haven’t been able to find any around here though for ours to try.

I hate honey and mushrooms, too! For some reason I love honey mustard (even though I hate yellow mustard), but anything else honey is just gross. I can’t stand the smell of mushrooms either, but my mom loves them.

I’m a super picky eater, but just some of the foods I avoid: tomato, bell pepper, mushrooms, honey, cabbage, lettuce, bananas, cherries, spaghetti or angel hair pasta, cake (seriously, I loathe the texture of cake and cake-like things), white chocolate, tea, coconut, liver, any cute animal, chicken legs (I love wings and thighs!), green beans, carrots, and sharp cheddar (although I will eat just about any other cheese in mass quantities). Also oranges and beets, because I’m super allergic, not because I don’t like them. I’m sure there’s a ton more, but since I avoid them I don’t really think about them at all.

Things I should avoid because I’m allergic, but eat anyway: all shellfish and artichokes.

    • Wow that’s funny you love most of the things I don’t like. I have made a few dishes with chickpeas, but I just end up fishing them out of my food during dinner. I don’t like mustard, so I never tried honey mustard either. Although I love mustard soup, I once ate a really good mustar soup in the uni cafรฉ on our university.
I actually like most of the things you avoid. I love tomatoes (only warm or in dishes, don’t like them raw) and red bell pepper is my favourite veggie. And I love cake! I am not a fan of cherries and carrots either, although I use carrots sometimes to fill up a dish or as carrot soufle, which is pretty good.

  9. This is funny because I love just about everything that you listed. With the exception of honey. I despise bee’s. I have a ridiculous phobia of bee’s. One got in my house a couple of months ago and I had a panic attack and cried. lol It’s so crazy. So when I see honey all I can think of is bee spit. I just can’t eat bee spit.

The foods I don’t like are..
Banana Nut Squash..Has a horrible taste.
Spaghetti Squash- It’s so bland and just not good at all.
Liver- My husband loves this and I just can’t it’s so gross.
Mary Kirkland recently posted…Review: Seized & Seduced by Shelley MunroMy Profile

    • I think we differ in taste a lot, lol. I don’t have anythgin against bee’s, although I prefer they stay outside, I don’t like insects in my house. I have no idea what banana nut squash it, but it sounds good, lol. I don’t think I coudl eat livers even if I did ate meat, they smell and look horrible

  10. I love this post idea – there’s many foods on here I don’t like as well such as honey, Brussels sprouts, chilli peppers and Olives. I love kiwi but I don’t like the texture too much as well. I do like chick peas though, and I don’t like coffee/tea(this one shocks everyone) Mushrooms and carrots aren’t my thing either.

    • I do like kiwi when it’s in smoothies or something like that as long as there are other fruits in it too, the texture of kiwi is the worst. I don’t like coffee either, but I drink multiple cups of tea each day. I don’t like carrot too much, but will throw them into my dishes sometimes, as long as the pieces are small and they cook long enough they are edible.
Lola recently posted…My To-Be Read List #8: chosen bookMy Profile

  11. I love mushrooms of all kinds. I could eat an entire meal of nothing but mushrooms and be perfectly happy. But I totally understand not liking them.

What I hate eating my family thinks I’m weird for. I hate sweet potatoes and yams, they just don’t taste good to me. I also don’t eat salmon, though I love fish, it just tastes icky. I like carrots, but only raw ones. If they’re cooked, I won’t eat them.

I don’t do scallops, clams or mussels, but that’s because the texture makes me gag. I don’t care about the flavor, I just can’t deal with how they feel in my mouth.

And I avoid all forms of coconut, because I’m horribly allergic. Though as I don’t like the taste, I’d most likely avoid that even if I wasn’t allergic!
Silvara recently posted…Fantasy Creature Friday – Kul!My Profile

    • I like sweet potatoes, although I gues sit really depends on how you prepare them and the quality of the sweet potatoes some taste much better than others. I am the contrary I like carrots, but only cooked or baked, I don’t like them raw. I like coconut and often use coconut milk in dishes, I think it would be horrible to be allergic to that. Sometimes I don’t like thigns because the texture as well, it really plays a big part in how you experience certain foods.

  12. Not a fan of Brussels sprouts too! The taste is just blergh. Ack for olives too! The taste is way too strong for me.

I don’t have a very huge dislike towards certain foods since I’m pretty much okay with anything but I hate zucchinis. I hate the texture and the bitterness.

    • Thanks :). I don’t mind honey if I can’t taste it, I have made soem dishes in which I was okay with it. I am not a seafood person either, once in a while it can be nice, but generally I avoid seafood.

  13. I love Chinese and Indian food but recently it feels like every takeaway is determined to burn my mouth off with mega hot curries! Curries in supermarkets are overflowing with peppers and I HATE them!!! I just want nice mild curries! Chinese prawn curries should not be hot enough to make you cry!!!
chucklesthescot recently posted…Stacking the Shelves #79My Profile

    • I love curries, but indeed if it’s too hot it ruins the curry. I prefer making them myself so I can throw in the spices I like. I like curries with lots of flavour, but not too hot.

  14. I’m so with you in the kiwi and olives. Ewwey! Lol! But I love lots of the things you don’t ๐Ÿ™‚ Avacados have to be one of my favorite foods, I’ll sprinkle them with just a little salt and yum! Oh and I love mushrooms in things or sauteed with onions! Oh I’m not much of fish person either – I really only like shell fish. Honey! I love honey! LOL I think everything else on your list is in my okay list – don’t love them, but will happily eat them. I’m going to read comments now, I’m curious about what others like ๐Ÿ™‚
Berls @ Fantasy is More Fun recently posted…My TBR List | April 2015 ResultsMy Profile

    • It’s been fun to hear what foods others don’t like and how tastes vary. I tried a few different types of mushrooms, but I just can’t get used to the taste. And olives are just horrible and way too strongly. I’ve never liked fish, I rather eat something else.
Lola recently posted…My To-Be Read List #8: chosen bookMy Profile

    • What a coincidence you actually like all of these. I don’t think I would like livers either, even if I did ate meat. They look so gross!

  15. I could definitely do without about half the things on your list, Lola, like honey and mushrooms and olives, but the worst food ever in my opinion is corn on the cob. I just hate it. I hate the smell and I hate the taste. And by extension, I hate the smell of popcorn too, although I don’t mind the taste too much. If we ever have dinner together, please let’s not have corn.

    ๐Ÿ™‚

    • I love sweets, but I can’t stand honey and usually leave it out of recipes as well, but plain honey is the worst. I never managed to get used to the taste of mushrooms and olives, bleh.
I love corn though, it’s one of my favourite veggies, but if we ever have dinner together I will remember not to make corn ;).

I know you did this a while back, but it’s a great topic! I’ve been trying to do better with many of the things I’ve been eating, and was surprised that some of the things you don’t like, I have been eating. (lol) Olives, chick peas, and brussels sprouts are only list to munch on these days, and seem to have been helping a lot. Hugs…
