Lola’s Kitchen: Cinnamon Sugar Puff Pastry Twisters Recipe

Lola’s Kitchen is a feature on Lola’s Reviews where I talk about all things related to food, cooking and baking. These posts can be recipe posts, tens list posts about food or recipes or more discussion type posts about food. I love cooking and spend some time in the kitchen almost every day, so I wanted to give it a place on my blog as well. The banner for this feature is designed by Michelle from Limabean Designs.

I was in a bit of a baking slump when I stumble upon this recipe. It looked very easy, required only a few ingredients and looked delicious. I pinned the recipe and not much later I decided to give it a try as I had all the ingredients at home. This is a perfect recipe for when you are craving something sweet, but don’t want to stand in the kitchen too long. We affectionately call them Twisties.
The original recipe called them churros, but I have eaten churros and they are delicious, but these taste nothing like churros. So I made up my own name for the recipe and tweaked the measurements a bit.
This recipe is based on Inspiration Kitchen her Baked Cinnamon Sugar Churros Recipe

Ingredients

  • Puff Pastry – 6 small squares
  • Butter – 50 gram/ 3.5 tablespoons
  • Sugar – 40 gram/ 3 tablespoons
  • Cinnamon – 1 heaped teaspoon
  • A Pastry brush

This makes 12 cinnamon puff pastry twists or enough for about 2-3 people to eat. So if you want more double the recipe. Also it is possible your puff pastry dough is differently shaped than mine, so beware to take that into account.
Cinnamon Sugar Puff Pastry Twisters Ingredients

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius/ 356 degrees Fahrenheit or follow the instructions on your package puff pastry.
  2. Remove the puff pastry from the freezer, so they can thaw.
  3. Return to the kitchen after about 5 minutes. Melt the butter for about 30-40 seconds in the microwave.
  4. Mix the cinnamon and sugar in a small bowl.
  5. Now pick up the first puff pastry square. Brush a layer of molten butter on the pastry with the pastry brush.
  6. With a spoon sprinkle a layer of cinnamon sugar on top of the butter.
  7. Now cut the square in 4 thin strips. Put two strips on top of each other with the cinnamon facing the inside. Repeat with the other two strips. Then twist them so they look like twisters and place on a baking sheet.
  8. Repeat with the rest of the puff pastry squares
  9. Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for about 20 minutes or until they are golden brown or follow the instructions on your package puff pastry.
  10. Remove them from the oven and let them cool down for 5 minutes. Place them on a plate and eat them, enjoy!

Variation Tips

  • Puff pastry cinnamon rolls. Instead of cutting the puff pastry square in two, roll the puff pastry. You now have roll shaped pastry instead.
  • Puff Pastry Twisters with sugar. Not a fan of cinnamon? Remove the cinnamon and make these with sugar only.

  1. Oh now there’s something that I can make. This sounds so good. I sometimes make cinnamon rolls using my bread machine to make the dough for me. Then I just roll it, fill with cinnamon sugar and butter, let rise and bake. This is so much quicker.

  2. Omg, these look so yummy! I have never tried to make anything like these but they seem so simple and delicious. I would have to convert the measurements but of course its’ easy to do that on google. Good work, Lola! They look so good 😀

    • That sounds good too with pie dough! I think it will taste similiar, but the dough will be a bit different. Although I don’t think it really matters which dough you use.

    • Aww thanks! That makes me so happy to hear you bookmarked my recipes. I always feel like everyone likes my recipes, but no one is actually making them. So it’s great to hear you’re planning to make them. I hope you’ll have a lot of fun making these!

It took me along time before I staretd cooking and baking, when you have someone else who can cook and bake in the house there’s no reason to do it yourself. Only when my sister couldn’t cook anymore I started cooking a few days and now two years later I cook every day. Those first few months are the hardest though and Imessed up quite some recipes before I even got a bit good at it.

    • I love cinnamon! If you want to add apple to the mix, you might have to change the size in that case. So instead of twisters, just make squares and then add apples to the filling, put the filling on half of the sqaure and then fold it and close the sides. In that case your apples can’t escape from the pastry.

    • Churros is a sort of dough as well and often covered in sugar and cinnamon, but the dough is different and get’s fried in oil. They are very long. I never had churros with caramel, but then again I only have eaten churos a few times.

It really takes little time to make, it does take some time to put butter and cinnamon sugar on each piece and then slice and twist them, but it doesn’t take too long, the waiting while they are in the oven is the hardest part.

    • Another bloggers who commented mentioned the same, I ever heard of it before. We always used all the pie dough for the pie, lol. It sounds like a good way to use the leftover dough. It’s a yummy snack and simple to make.
