And I asked Joanne some questions about writing and her books.
– How do you come up with the names for your characters in your books?
This is always fun. I have baby name books that I browse or I look up popular baby names from different time periods depending on the age of the character and the time period of the book. I do look at the meanings of names or else I try to mix up the sounds and styles of names. In other words, you don’t want to have multiple characters’ names beginning with the same letter or to choose names that are too similar. In books with a lot of characters, that can get to be a challenge.

– How did you start your career as a writer? And what was the first book you have written?
I started writing a novel while I was waiting for my first class to start as a graduate student. I wrote it in a notebook to pass that time under a tree at the University of Louisville. I knew I wanted to be a writer because I loved the way romance novels gave me a total escape from the things I read for school—grammar textbooks, for example, or the theory of criticism. I had read a novel by Elizabeth Lowell during a flight delay in Newark, and I didn’t even care how long I sat there! I just wanted to read more. I thought if I could provide that kind of escape for someone else—to completely detach from a hard day and get lost in a story—that would be fantastic.

The first novel I started that day in Louisville later became A Knight Most Wicked, a medieval historical. However, the first book I ever sold was Learning Curves.

– From where do you get your inspiration for your romance novels?
Everywhere! Writers are like sponges… it’s important we absorb ideas from everywhere so we have enough to write about and we can do so authentically. I eavesdrop on restaurant conversations, observe body language between couples who are holding hands or arguing. I gather ideas from television shows, often asking myself what would happen if the plot took a different turn.

– Who designed the covers for your books and how went the process of developing them?
The Harlequin series romance covers are developed when an author writes an Art Fact Sheet about the book. We do this online these days, although when I began, I filled out an eight page form by hand for each book. We describe the characters and the setting, as well as some key scenes from the book. The author also tries to note any important landmarks, props or details that would make an interesting cover. We are encouraged to reference other covers we like or movie stars that resemble our characters. All of this information helps the Harlequin art department to come up with our covers.

– Do you have any writing habits or food you love to eat while writing?
I like to be in control of my environment when I write. Ideally the house is quiet and I play music. I have a variety of Pandora stations that help with this. I like a candle lit so the house smells good. I don’t want any traffic through the room where I’m working. And I need tea or coffee at the ready! Nine times out of ten, I don’t have all these things in place when I’m working, but I work best when I do. I dearly love to eat candy hearts while I work, but I try not to make this a regular habit!

About the Author:joanne rock
Joanne Rock fell in love with reading at a young age and stayed out of trouble- mostly- as a teen thanks to long stints at her local library where she routinely checked out as many books as a bicycle basket would carry. She still pronounces all the names of the Greek gods incorrectly because she learned them through reading- a small price to pay for the vast amount of knowledge she gained from books! She started writing when the voices in her head kept her awake at night, demanding she tell their stories. A successful romance author and former Golden Heart winner, she’s penned dozens of books for a variety of Harlequin series and has been nominated for the prestigious RITA award three times. Her work is reprinted around the globe and has been translated into twenty different languages. When she’s not reading or writing, she’s cheering on her three sons in sporting endeavors of every variety.
