Anonymous Books We Still Don’t Know Who WroteIn my new book Unveiling You, my main character Amy’s father was an author. He wrote under a pen name, and many of his readers never found out who he really was, even after he died. They only knew the enigma or JA Banks. It got me thinking… we know many books are released under pen names. What about those books that are completely anonymous? Here are some of the most interesting ones to me.
1. A Woman in Berlin
We never found out who wrote this brave telling of Berlin during 1945 when the city fell to the Russian Army. How cool that we have things like this for us today to help us understand what happened back then!2. Bourbon Kid
The most recent in this list (originally published in 2000), Bourbon Kid is actually a series. The horror/thriller books are penned by an anonymous author, and the most was know is he or she is British. They were first published online, but a publisher picked them up and re-released them. Fascinating!3. O: A Presidential Novel
Poorly reviewed and honestly not one I’d want to read, this novel is a thinly veiled account of the 2008 presidential election between Barak Obama and John McCain. There are speculations it was written by someone on the McCain campaign named Mark Salter. I’ll let someone else read this one.4. The Autobiography of a Flea
This erotic novel was published in 1887 in London. Some websites have the author down as Stanislas de Rhodes. What’s most interesting is the story is narrated through a flea who watches the plot, which is mainly sex scenes, unfold and tells the story with a distant point of view.5. The Way of a Pilgrim
This is a religious work about pilgrims who traveled across Russia — or possibly just one pilgrim. It’s unsure whether it’s supposed to be autobiographical or fictional, but it’s one of the many religious texts that don’t have a clear author.6. Beowulf
This epic poem was written in Old English sometime in West Saxon sometimes in the Middle Ages. I read it in school, but I remember very little of it. I could always watch the movie, if I feel like sitting through some bad CGI.7. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
I was surprised to see this one. I thought it was Shakespeare… or Tolkien… or someone! The epic poem is one of the man Arthurian tales and it’s called a romance, but I guess they’re talking chivalric romance. Whatever that is.8. The String of Pearls
This is where Sweeney Todd first makes an appearance in literature! He’s a barber who murders his customers and turns them into meat pies. And later sings catchy songs, when Broadway gets a hold of him.When I did my research, I thought there’d be more books out there that were anonymous. Apparently not! I guess it’s not too hard to find out who’s behind something, especially in today’s day and age. If someone really wanted to, they might find out about Amy’s dad. If the wrong person finds out, though, it’ll risk her whole internship, because she’s working for the guy who fired him twenty years ago.
