Tragic (Rook and Roning #1)
by J.A. Huss

I got an ARC for review

blurb from Goodreads: Rook Walsh is TRAGIC

Because life so far – just sucks. Some girls get parents. Rook got the foster care system. Some girls get Prince Charming. Rook got an abusive frog. Some girls get lucky…

Rook got a second chance.

And she took it. Because when fate throws you a bone – you grab it with both hands and run.

Antoine Chaput knows the minute he spies Rook in his photography studio that she’s got The Look. The dark and desperate look he must have to land the exclusive TRAGIC media contract.

Rook is paired up with top model, Ronin, and he’s everything her abusive ex-boyfriend wasn’t. Patient, gentle, happy, attentive, and sexy! He knows exactly what to do to make Rook blush for Antoine’s camera.

Rook’s luck changes in an instant and suddenly she’s the darling of the modeling world. It’s a dream job to go with a dream guy and all she has to do is look pretty and follow directions. But there’s always a price to pay – and Rook is about to get the bill.

My review:
I was in the mood for a New Adult book so I decided to pick this one up. This book is really good and different than the NA books I have read so far, not only the setting, but also the pace and how the relationship progresses and the fact that this is going to be a series.

As soon as I picked it up I didn’t put it down until I was like 25% into it and then I stopped only because it was time for dinner. I just wanted to keep reading, find out what was going to happen. Bad things happen and good things and it really is a tragic story at some points, but it also is a beautifull story, filled with hope. I finished the rest of the book that evening, mostly in one sitting, because when I put it down I kept thinking about it and decided to pick it up again. Really I just had to know what would happen next and I kept thinking about the characters when I put it down.

There are some sad parts and rough moments. Rook has been gone through so much and sometimes I wondered how she even found the strenght to keep going. And some things she says and her outlook on life can be so bleak, but the focus isn’t on this although it is a big part of the story. There is also a lot of hope. This story has dark parts, but also enough ligth ones. And most of the bad things that happened are in the past.

I really liked Rook, one of the main characters. I love how strong she is even though everything that happened to her. She really shows her strenght and I think she is a great main character, although there were a few scenes where she was contradicting herself a bit, although there was an explanation for it later in the story.

This book is told from two point of views, the other point of view is Ronin’s point of view. I really liked getting to know him too, although I felt like we got to know less about him. There is a great scene towards the end of the book that gives a good idea of who he is. I did like the multiple point of views.

There are a few references in this book to a tv series which I didn’t really get because I never have seen the tv series. I got a bit annoyed at how often this was mentioned, because I didn’t get the refence and I had prefered if they gave each other a different nickname.

To conclude: I really liked this book, I just had to keep reading and couldn’t put it down until I finished it. I liked Rook she is a strong character evn though everything that happened. There were some small parts I didn’t like. Overal it was a great read and I can’t wait to read the next book in this series!

About the author:
J. A. Huss likes to write new adult books that make you think and keep you guessing. Her favorite genre to read is space opera, but since practically no one reads those books, she writes new adult science fiction, paranormal romance, contemporary romance, urban fantasy, and books about Junco (who refuses to be saddled with a label).

She has an undergraduate degree in horses, (yes, really–Thank you, Colorado State University) and a master’s degree in forensic toxicology from the University of Florida. She used to have a job driving around Colorado doing pretty much nothing but shooting the breeze with farmers, but now she just writes, runs the New Adult Addiction and Clean Teen Reads Book Blogs, and runs an online science classroom for homeschoolers.
