GunsGUNS:The Spencer BOOK (Rook and Ronin Spinoff)
by JA Huss

Release date: March 31, 2014
Genre: Contemporary Romance, New Adult-ish, Suspense

Blurb:
THIS IS NOT A STANDALONE BOOK – IT IS HIGHLY SUGGESTED THAT YOU READ ALL THE PREVIOUS NOVELS AND NOVELLAS BEFORE STARTING THIS BOOK

Spencer Shrike is a man with a plan. Get in. Get out. Move on. He loves Ron the Bomb, and her safety is the only thing on his mind these days. But life is a tricky bastard, and conning criminals for the better part of ten years brings its own set of problems. Sure, Rook lied her way out of a sticky situation, covering for crimes Ronin, Ford, and Spencer committed, and getting them all off scot-free in the process.

But not everyone is buying Rook’s story, and Spencer is desperate to figure out who’s in town setting them up for a fall.

Veronica the Bombshell Vaughn has put up with Spencer Shrike’s shit for years and where has it gotten her? A big fat nowhere. No ring, no house, no kids, and no promises. In fact, Spencer is worse than ever—completely distant and moody. She’s done sitting at home, pining over a man she can’t have.

But she’s not opposed to fighting for him.

Ron the Bomb fights hard and she fights dirty, so she’s willing to do whatever it takes to get Spencer’s attention.

But now there’s another man in town with his eye on her. He’s got secrets too, but unlike Spencer, Bobby Mansi is more than willing to let Veronica in on them.

The entire Rook and Ronin series comes full circle. Every con, every lie, and every skeleton in the closet is back for one final shot at vengeance and the only way to set it right… is to get out the guns.

My Review:
I got a copy in exchange for an honest review

Guns is really the last book in the Rook en Ronin series and I was really curious what would happen. Basically it’s about the trial they have coming up and how Spencer deals with that, Veronica and getting a new shop for his bikes.

There is a lot of build-up to the trial, but to be honest I was a bit confused where this trial was all about and there was little recap about that. I thought Rook already did a trial and I didn’t understand why there was so much risk surrounding this one, but then again it’s been some time since I read Panic. It’s also about Spencer and Veronica and I was a bit annoyed at how he kept pushing Veronica away, I get that he was worried about her, but I still think he should’ve just let Veronica in on the team. I enjoyed JA Huss her writing style, like always, and I read the book in a few days. It’s still an enjoyable book, but something was just missing that the other books did have or maybe that’s just me.

Guns is told from the point of view of both Spencer and Veronica. From the three males in this series Ronin, Ford and Spencer I have to say that Spencer always was my least favourite. For some reason I just don’t connect with him that much. And that proved to stand a bit in my way of enjoying this book, I couldn’t understand some of the things Spencer and Veronica did and I just didn’t care that much about them as the others. I did enjoy the views we got into their past, but I actually enjoyed their past more than the present, in the past they actually have some romance going on, while in the present Spencer is pushing Veronica away and they have some quarrels and then have sex and that’s about it. Also both Spencer and Veronica both make some dumb descisions and I wished they trusted each other just a little more and told each other what was happening.

Towards the end suddenly all hell breaks loose, there is so much going on and happening. It was fast paced and full of action, but I felt like the pace was a bit too fast and rushed sometimes, because some things just didn’t have time to sink in. And after that it was wrapped up all a bit quickly and I was left with some questions that where never answered. The epilogue’s on the other hand where great! I loved seeing how they all where doing in the future! Really that part was close to perfect.

To conclude: I had some issues with this book, but overal it was still an enjoyable story. I didn’t understand why Spencer kept pushing Veronica away. I also didn’t connect with Spencer and Veronica as much as I did with the other characters. Towards the ending things start happening and the pace really picks up, some things are a bit rushed and not wrapped up as nicely as I would’ve liked. The writing style was great and I really enjoyed the two epilogues, they where done so well!

Top Ten Favorite Foods

Lola wanted to know what my top ten foods are and I am happy to oblige! When I write, I typically snack on things like popcorn, peanut butter crackers, or string cheese. But when I come out of my writing cave, I actually do love to bake and cook.

So here they are – ten foods I really love…

Popcorn – I have my very own popcorn cart. I love the eff out of popcorn and I make it at least 2x a week.
Pancakes – I could eat pancakes for every meal. But I cannot for the life of me, make pancakes, so I rarely ever actually eat pancakes.
Rib Roast – we have this every New Year’s Day.
Cucumber – I am not a big vegetable eater, but cucumbers are damn good.
Birthday cake – white, with buttercream frosting.
Gumballs – they are little balls of deliciousness.
Homemade tacos – I make some kickass tacos.
Baked potato soup – we have this every Christmas Eve with French bread and it’s so rich, we are usually still full the next day, so I‘ve stopped making a Christmas meal. 🙂
Chicken and rice soup – I make this in the crock pot when it’s cold outside and I’m too busy to think about dinner.
Pretty much everything made out of pumpkin. Muffins, pie, soup, bread… pumpkin is God’s gift to baked goods.

Thanks a bunch for being part of the GUNS tour and having me on your blog!

About the Author:
J. A. Huss likes to write new adult books that make you think and keep you guessing. Her favorite genre to read is space opera, but since practically no one reads those books, she writes new adult science fiction, paranormal romance, contemporary romance, urban fantasy, and books about Junco (who refuses to be saddled with a label).

She has an undergraduate degree in horses, (yes, really–Thank you, Colorado State University) and a master’s degree in forensic toxicology from the University of Florida. She used to have a job driving around Colorado doing pretty much nothing but shooting the breeze with farmers, but now she just writes, runs the New Adult Addiction and Clean Teen Reads Book Blogs, and runs an online science classroom for homeschoolers.

  1. Omg I love popcorn I always load it with either pickle powder or that white cheddar one! I got my own popcorn maker for Christmas too it’s getting usage let me tell you! >.< Tacos may be my favorite food ever. That and Spaghetti.

And great review Lola, it's always hard when you don't completely connect to the characters. Glad you still liked it though!

    • I like popcorn as well, although I prefer to flavour them myself, as I think storebrought flavoured popcorn is usually too strongly flavoured. I also have to agree with pancakes, just like Julie I love them, but I can’t make them. I did manage to sucesfully make american pancakes once, but my dutch pancakes always fail.

Yeah for some reason I just didn’t connect as much with these characters as the characters in the previous books, but it was still an enjoyable story :).
