by Laura Greenwood

My Rating: 4 stars

Genre: Monster Romance/ Paranormal Academy Romance
Age Category: New Adult
Type of romance: m/f

Blurb:
A chance encounter with the mate she’s been running away from changes everything for Lexi.

Running into her mate should be a good thing, but for Lexi, it comes with unimaginable pressure. But when she sees Edur again after three years apart, she knows that there’s no escaping the mate bond between them, even if she’s scared to face what a relationship might mean for the two of them.

Edur has missed Lexi every day she’s been gone, not just as his mate, but as his best friend, and now that she’s back in his life, he’s determined to keep him there. As the two of them explore her ace identity together and what it means for their relationship, they reach levels of trust that they never imagined possible.

Maybe this time, the two of them can build something that lasts.

My Review

I received a copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.

I’ve been enjoying this series so far and was looking forward to this book. These books are light and fun monster romances set at an academy. This book has a nixie and a frost elf as main characters. Nixie Lexi ran away from Frost Elf Edur when she first noticed their mate bond, now years later they meet again and have a chance to reconnect.

I liked these two together, they had some issues to resolve and talk through like why Lexi ran away the first time. And I liked how that was handled and they actually communicate about it. Lexi is asexual and is afraid this means she can’t have a mate, but she explains how this works for her and Edur is willing to listen and figure out what works for both of them. I liked seeing them figure out how to have a relationship and what being asexual actually means for Lexi. Lexi is sex positive and is willing to have sex sometimes even if she doesn’t desire it the same way a non-asexual person would. I thought it was very interesting to see how this got explored in this book and seeing how they could make things work for them.

One of my favorite parts of this book was the fun dates the two go on. They recreate some fun things they did as kids like bowling. And it was fun to see them have fun and reconnect with each other and get to know each other again. I also thought the scene with Edur making lactose-free ice cream for Lexi was so sweet and with my own food intolerances I could appreciate that scene even more. Their romance has some strong friends to lovers and second chance vibes and I really liked seeing them reconnect and build an even stronger bond.

I also liked seeing a bit about their paranormal monster types, like how Edur has cold skin and can create ice. While Lexi has some fins and likes to swim and play the violin. There are a few mentions of some side characters like Lexi’s roommate, I wonder if she gets her own story? And toward the end there is a scene where the couple of next book makes an appearance.

To summarize: I enjoyed this book. It’s a light and fun monster romance book set at a supernatural academy. I liked seeing Lexi and Edur reconnect and figure out what they want their relationship to be like going forward. Lexi is asexual and I liked how they talked about it and what it means for their romance. There is some steam later on as well as Lexi is sex positive. I especially liked the fun dates they go on together like the bowling. I liked how there is a bit about their monster types and there are some side characters who play a small role.

I thought the second chance aspect of their romance was really well done and it make it clear they were handling things differently now and talking things through.

The fun dates are really one of the things that stand out to me about this series. Oh I didn’t even realize the bowling pin is on the cover, that’s a nice detail!
